Friction in the classroom may create useful tension for teachers when they attempt to discuss sensitive topics as part of democratic learning. Due to the openness and indeterminacy of these topics, students can experience what it is like to be (political) subjects in a diverse society and become aware of other people’s subjectness in a charged classroom. To better understand how to handle educational friction in the classroom, we observed and interviewed nine Dutch expert teachers and analyzed the empirical data by using our Educational Friction Modelling Framework as a heuristic lens. This study shows how teachers allowed extreme statements and used the subsequent friction during their lessons, challenged and provoked their students, made room for their pupils in several ways to enhance their participation, and made a distinction between rationality and emotions in the classroom. We argue that our framework sheds light on what charges the classroom and contributes to the further development of contained risk-taking as part of democratic education.

Fingermarks have proven to play an important role in criminal investigations for identification purposes. However, in some cases, the donor of the fingermark is not disputed but the activity that led to the deposition of the fingermark is. In this article, the state-of-theart knowledge on evaluating fingermarks at activity level is discussed. First, the relevant variables that should be taken into account when evaluating fingermarks given activity level propositions are reviewed, followed by showing how such an evaluation could be performed using a Bayesian network. Finally, the main concerns and relevant discussions related to this topic are discussed.

Our current smart society, where problems and frictions are smoothed out with smart, often invisible technology like AI and smart sensors, calls for designers who unravel and open the smart fabric. Societies are not malleable, and moreover, a smooth society without rough edges is neither desirable nor livable. In this paper we argue for designing friction to enhance a more nuanced debate of smart cities in which conflicting values are better expressed. Based on our experiences with the Moral Design Game, an adversarial design activity, we came to understand the value of creating tangible vessels to highlight conflict and dipartite feelings surrounding smart cities.

Fingermarks are highly relevant in criminal investigations for individualization purposes. In some cases, the question in court changes from ‘Who is the source of the fingermarks?’ to ‘How did the fingermark end up on the surface?’. In this paper, we explore evaluation of fingermarks given activity level propositions by using Bayesian networks. The variables that provide information on activity level questions for fingermarks are identified and their current state of knowledge with regards to fingermarks is discussed. We identified the variables transfer, persistency, recovery, background fingermarks, location of the fingermarks, direction of the fingermarks, the area of friction ridge skin that left the mark and pressure distortions as variables that may provide information on how a fingermark ended up on a surface. Using three case examples, we show how Bayesian networks can be used for the evaluation of fingermarks given activity level propositions.

The professional growth of midwives, essential for optimizing midwifery leadership globally, can be enhanced through twinning collaborations. How twinning promotes growth is unclear. This case study explores how professional growth is affected by cultural differences between twins. We used a longitudinal qualitative design including data from open-ended questionnaires and focus groups. These data were analyzed using a content analysis. Our findings show that cultural differences were capable of both hindering and facilitating professional growth. Within the complex dynamics of twinning, professional growth was facilitated by twins’ preparedness to bridge cultural differences. Common goals positively influenced this process. Friction was more likely, and professional growth was hindered, when midwives were unprepared to bridge cultural differences. To optimize professional growth through twinning, we recommend a clear focus on common goals and consideration of the interaction between the length of a project and the extent of the cultural differences between twins.

This article examines how artistic research practices challenge and reconfigure institutional approaches toresearch ethics. Focusing on the case of Performing Working —a doctoral project in the arts that was the first toundergo ethical review at the University of the Arts Utrecht —it investigates how forms of consent, researcherroles, and institutional responsibility are negotiated when research is processual, embodied, and collaborativelydeveloped.The article draws on a collaborative autoethnographic reflection involving the artist-researcher, a researchparticipant, and members of the ethics committee. Care ethics is used as a conceptual lens to analyse the ethicaldimensions of the case, foregrounding relationality, vulnerability, and attention to power. Rather than treatingethical approval as a one-off procedural hurdle, the analysis highlights ethics as an ongoing, situated practicethat unfolds through dialogue, friction, and mutual attunement.Artistic research is presented here as a ‘hard case’ that reveals structural frictions in existing review systems.At the same time, it offers alternative imaginaries and practices for dealing with complexity, uncertainty, and co-responsibility in research. While grounded in an artistic context, the article speaks to broader concerns inqualitative research methodology, particularly in fields that engage with lived experience, reflexivity, and sharedauthority. Ethics is reframed not merely as compliance, but as integral to how research is shaped, shared, andheld accountable across diverse domains.
