3In this charging plaze energy exchange will be done by a DC microgrid between PV, V2G electric cars and lighting. Control is done autonomous with Droop Rate Control.
DOCUMENT
A lab-based test setup was developed to simulate a novel droop rate controlled DC bus charging plaza installation in the Netherlands. The system consists of multiple bidirectional DC charging points, a PV array and a bidirectional grid connection. Currently the installed system employs linear droop control at the charge points and active grid connection. This lab setup allows for the testing of new control schemes, such as piecewise linear droop control, before implementing in the installed system. The simulations performed in this study investigate a variety of power flow scenarios and determine appropriate voltage and current setpoints and control mechanisms.

The Vulkan real estate site in Oslo is owned by Aspelin Ramm, and includes one of the largest parking garages used for EV charging in Europe. EV charging (both AC and DC) is managed for now predominately for costs reasons but also with relevance at further EV penetration level in this car parking location (mixed EV and ICE vehicles). This neighbourhood scale SEEV4-City operational pilot (OP) has 50 22 kW flexible AC chargers with two sockets each and two DC chargers of 50 kW with both ChaDeMo and CCS outlets. All EV chargers now have a smart control (SC) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) functionality (though the latter may not be in place fully for DC chargers, as they may not be fully connected to the remote back-office system of the EV charging systems operator). A Lithium-ion Battery Energy Stationary Storage System (BESS) with a capacity of 50 kWh is pre-programmed to reduce the energy power peaks of the electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and charges at other times from the central grid (which has a generation mix of 98% from hydro-electric power, and in the region covering Oslo also 1% from wind). The inverter used in the BESS is rated at 50 kW, and is also controlled to perform phase balancing of the 3-phase supply system.

The application of DC grids is gaining more attention in office applications. Especially since powering an office desk would not require a high power connection to the main AC grid but could be made sustainable using solar power and battery storage. This would result in fewer converters and further advanced grid utilization. In this paper, a sustainable desk power application is described that can be used for powering typical office appliances such as computers, lighting, and telephones. The desk will be powered by a solar panel and has a battery for energy storage. The applied DC grid includes droop control for power management and can either operate stand-alone or connected to other DC-desks to create a meshed-grid system. A dynamic DC nano-grid is made using multiple self-developed half-bridge circuit boards controlled by microcontrollers. This grid is monitored and controlled using a lightweight network protocol, allowing for online integration. Droop control is used to create dynamic power management, allowing automated control for power consumption and production. Digital control is used to regulate the power flow, and drive other applications, including batteries and solar panels. The practical demonstrative setup is a small-sized desktop with applications built into it, such as a lamp, wireless charging pad, and laptop charge point for devices up to 45W. User control is added in the form of an interactive remote wireless touch panel and power consumption is monitored and stored in the cloud. The paper includes a description of technical implementation as well as power consumption measurements.

This paper explores current and potential future use of fast charging stations for electric passenger vehicles. The aim of the paper is to analyse current charging patterns at fast charging stations and the role of fast charging among different charging options. These patterns are explored along the lines of the technical capabilities of the vehicles and it is found that with increasing battery capacity the need for fast charging decreases. However, for those vehicles with large charging capacities there are indications that fast charging is perceived as more convenient as these are used more often. Such results indicate a larger share for fast charging if charging capacities increase in the future. Results from a spatial analysis show that most fast charging is done at a considerable distance from home, suggesting mostly ‘on the road’ charging sessions. Some fast charging sessions are relatively close to home, especially for those without private home charging access. This shows some future potential for fast charging in cities with many on-street parking facilities.

Instead of using a passive AC power grid for low power applications, this paper describes a smart plug for DC networks that is capable of providing the correct power to a device (up to 100W) and that allows for communication between different plugs and monitoring of energy consumption across the DC network using the Ethernet protocol in conjunction with a signal modulator to adapt the signals to the DC network. The ability to monitor consumption on a device-per-device basis allows for closer monitoring of in-house energy use and provides an easily scalable platform to monitor consumption at a macro level. In order to make this paper attractive for the consumer market and easily integrable with existing consumer devices, a generally compatible solution is needed. To meet these demands and to take advantage of the trend of charging consumer devices through USB, we opted for the recently adapted USB Power Delivery standard. This standard allows devices to communicate with the plug and demand a specific voltage and current needed for the device to operate. The purpose of this paper is to give the reader insight in the development of a proof of concept of the smart DC/DC power plug. 10.1109/DUE.2014.6827761

The Smart Current Limiter is a switching DC to DC converter that provides a digitally pre-set input current control for inrush limiting and power management. Being able to digitally adjust the current level in combination with external feedback can be used for control systems like temperature control in high power DC appliances. Traditionally inrush current limiting is done using a passive resistance whose resistance changes depending on the current level. Bypassing this inrush limiting resister with a Mosfet improves efficiency and controllability, but footprint and losses remain large. A switched current mode controlled inrush limiter can limit inrush currents and even control the amount of current passing to the application. This enables power management and inrush current limitation in a single device. To reduce footprint and costs a balance between losses and cost-price on one side and electromagnetic interference on the other side is sought and an optimum switching frequency is chosen. To reduce cost and copper usage, switching happens on a high frequency of 300kHz. This increases the switching losses but greatly reduces the inductor size and cost compared to switching supplies running on lower frequencies. Additional filter circuits like snubbers are necessary to keep the control signals and therefore the output current stable.
