3Equestrianism is currently facing a range of pressing challenges. These challenges, which are largely based on evolving attitudes to ethics and equine wellbeing, have consequences for the sport’s social licence to operate. The factors that may have contributed to the current situation include overarching societal trends, specific aspects of the equestrian sector, and factors rooted in human nature. If equestrianism is to flourish, it is evident that much needs to change, not the least,human behaviour. To this end, using established behaviour change frameworks that have been scientifically validated and are rooted in practice — most notably, Michie et al.’s COM-B model and Behaviour Change Wheel — could be of practical value for developing and implementing equine welfare strategies. This review summarises the theoretical underpinnings of some behaviour change frameworks and provides a practical, step-by-step approach to designing an effective behaviour change intervention. A real-world example is provided through the retrospective analysis of an intervention strategy that aimed to increase the use of learning theory in (educational) veterinary practice. We contend that the incorporation of effective behaviour change interventions into any equine welfare improvement strategy may help to safeguard the future of equestrianism.

In this chapter communicative interventions on the energy transition will be presented according to the research model, from A to Sustainability, that includes the following steps, urgency, awareness, action & collective action, public support and in dialogue with society. The research model is discussed as well as various points interesting for communication researchers and professionals. At the end of the chapter some discussion points are issued.

De Nederlandse landbouw staat voor ingrijpende veranderingen. Discussies over stikstof, duurzaamheid en toekomstperspectieven verlopen vaak gepolariseerd, terwijl oplossingen afhankelijk zijn van samenwerking tussen partijen met uiteenlopende belangen. Dit proefschrift onderzoekt hoe gesprekken tussen boeren, beleidsmakers en andere betrokkenen verlopen, en hoe interactionele keuzes in die gesprekken bijdragen aan het ontstaan, of juist het uitblijven, van collectieve actie. Op basis van gedetailleerde analyses van echte gesprekken in uiteenlopende contexten, zoals mediadebatten, voedselcoöperaties en multi-actor netwerken, laat het onderzoek zien dat gesprekken niet alleen standpunten weerspiegelen, maar actief betekenissen en onderlinge verhoudingen vormen. De manier waarop problemen worden geframed is daarbij nauw verbonden met identiteitswerk en de rol die emoties krijgen in interacties. Wanneer deze dimensies elkaar versterken, kunnen tegenstellingen verharden; wanneer zij ruimte laten voor wederzijdse erkenning, kan nieuwe gemeenschappelijke grond ontstaan. Het proefschrift laat zien hoe kleine, lokale vormen van samenwerking (‘small wins’) via gesprekken kunnen bijdragen aan bredere collectieve en institutionele verandering, maar ook hoe kwetsbaar zulke processen zijn onder externe druk. De centrale conclusie is dat collectieve actie in complexe landbouwtransities niet los te begrijpen is van de interactionele dynamieken in gesprekken. Framing, identiteitswerk en de omgang met emoties bepalen in hoge mate of verschillen worden versterkt of overbrugd, en of gesprekken ruimte creëren voor gezamenlijke handelingsperspectieven. Gesprekken functioneren daarmee als een sleutelmechanisme in transitieprocessen, zonder op zichzelf voldoende te zijn om verandering af te dwingen.

The skillsets of production workers are crucial for the effective adoption of smart technologies which are largely shaped by work design. However, current literature lacks comprehensive insights into the skills and work designs of production workers, hindering the adoption of Industry 5.0. Grounded in work design and skills literature this study explores the required skills of employees and perceived work design characteristics for adoption of AI, AR/VR, and Robotics in Dutch Manufacturing SMEs. This qualitative study involved semi-structured interviews with experts, managers and production workers. Results reveal a need to reassess traditional job profiles, as two distinct production workers roles emerge from AI, AR/VR and robotics adoption. Machine operators face potential deskilling through low feedback from the job, low task variety and low job complexity. Foremanproduction workers require additional skills due to job enlargement and enrichment. However, they seem to be put in this job role due to the lack of various professional and transversal skills to fully utilize smart technologies, and to accommodate a viable return on the technology investment. This highlights the importance of balancing job resources and requirements in work design, training programs for I5.0 skill development, and understanding contextual design elements of manufacturing systems contributing to viable I5.0 adoption in SMEs. Finally, sustainability, self-awareness, and self-reflection skills are not considered by professionals, displaying unawareness of its importance for I5.0 implementation practices.

When it comes to hard to solve problems, the significance of situational knowledge construction and network coordination must not be underrated. Professional deliberation is directed toward understanding, acting and analysis. We need smart and flexible ways to direct systems information from practice to network reflection, and to guide results from network consultation to practice. This article presents a case study proposal, as follow-up to a recent dissertation about online simulation gaming for youth care network exchange (Van Haaster, 2014).

Contrary to most sectors, to date the tourism and aviation industries have not managed to level off greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, effective mitigation through technological innovation or structural and behavioural change cannot be expected shortly. Airlines and tourism companies appear to use carbon offsetting as a last resort. However, offsetting is generally acknowledged as a second-best solution for mitigating emissions, after reducing energy use. This paper seeks to determine the mitigation potential of voluntary carbon offsetting by comparing public and industry awareness of climate change and aviation emissions, and attitudes to various mitigation measures with relevant online communication by 64 offset providers. Methods were a literature review and online content analyses. Overall, the gaps that were identified between awareness, attitude and actual behaviour are not bridged by provider communication. From this perspective, the mitigation potential of voluntary carbon offsetting for achieving reductions of tourism transport emissions is estimated as low. The same conclusion is reached by comparing carbon dioxide volumes of flight offsets with actual air travel emissions. Current sales of flight offsets compensate less than 1% of all aviation emissions.

Reducing energy consumption in urban households is essential for reaching the necessary climate research and policy targets for CO2 reduction and sustainability. The dominant approach has been to invest in technological innovations that increase household energy efficiency. This article moves beyond this approach, first by emphasising the need to prioritise reducing energy demand over increasing energy efficiency and, second, by addressing the challenge of energy consumption at the level of the community, not the individual household. It argues that energy consumption is shaped in and by social communities, which construct consciousness of the energy implications of lifestyle choices. By analysing a specific type of community, a digital community, it looks at the role that communication on online discussion boards plays in the social process of questioning energy needs and shaping a “decent lifestyle”. The article explores three social processes of community interaction around energy practices – coercive, mimetic, and normative – questioning the ways in which they contribute to the activation of energy discursive consciousness. In conclusion, the article reflects on the potential implications of these social processes for future research and interventions aimed at reducing energy demand. To illustrate how the three selected social processes influence one another, the article builds on the results of a research project conducted in Amsterdam, analysing the potential contribution of online discussion boards in shaping energy norms in the Sustainable Community of Amsterdam Facebook group.

Behaviour Change Support Systems (BCSS), already running for the 10th time at Persuasive Technology, is a workshop that builds around the concept of systems that are specifically designed to help and support behaviour change in individuals or groups. The highly multi-disciplinary nature of designing and implementing behaviour change strategies and systems for the strategies has been in the forefront of this workshop from the very beginning. The persuasive technology field is becoming a linking pin connecting natural and social sciences, requiring a holistic view on persuasive technologies, as well as multi-disciplinary approach for design, implementation, and evaluation. So far, the capacities of technologies to change behaviours and to continuously monitor the progress and effects of interventions are not being used to its full potential. The use of technologies as persuaders may shed a new light on the interaction process of persuasion, influencing attitudes and behaviours. Yet, although human- computer interaction is social in nature and people often do see computers as social actors, it is still unknown how these interactions re-shape attitude, beliefs, and emotions, or how they change behaviour, and what the drawbacks are for persuasion via technologies. Humans re-shape technology, changing their goals during usage. This means that persuasion is not a static ad hoc event but an ongoing process. Technology has the capacity to create smart (virtual) persuasive environments that provide simultaneously multimodal cues and psycho-physiological feedback for personal change by strengthening emotional, social, and physical presence. An array of persuasive applications has been developed over the past decade with an aim to induce desirable behaviour change. Persuasive applications have shown promising results in motivating and supporting people to change or adopt new behaviours and attitudes in various domains such as health and wellbeing, sustainable energy, education, and marketing. This workshop aims at connecting multidisciplinary researchers, practitioners and experts from a variety of scientific domains, such as information sciences, human-computer interaction, industrial design, psychology and medicine. This interactive workshop will act as a forum where experts from multiple disciplines can present their work, and can discuss and debate the pillars for persuasive technology.

Managed realignment (MR) involves repositioning coastal or river flood defenses to re-establish tidal flooding and restore intertidal ecosystems in reclaimed areas. The restoration of intertidal ecosystems contributes to flood risk management and achieving nature conservation objectives. However, MR often faces resistance from local communities, potentially undermining its implementation. Previous qualitative studies have discussed the role of socio-psychological constructs in shaping public attitudes toward MR, but quantitative empirical assessments grounded in socio-psychological theory are scarce. In addition, the absence of comparative research across multiple cases limits the potential for generalization, making it difficult to apply findings to other contexts and populations. This study contributes to filling these research gaps by examining socio-psychological constructs that shape public support for MR in three case study areas in the Netherlands. We administered questionnaires among households (N = 324) and used multivariate and regression models to analyze the collected data. Results across the case studies point to three socio-psychological constructs that consistently explain public support for MR, including (i) trust in institutions, (ii) outcome expectancies and (iii) emotions. These constructs are intercorrelated, suggesting that they influence each other when collectively shaping support for MR. Strategies to enhance public support could be more effective when they address these constructs in an integrated manner. Moving forward, it is important to explore how public engagement and communication around MR policies could be tailored to leverage positive emotions better and how the design of MR can be aligned with location-specific priorities.

Underutilised charging stations can be a bottleneck in the swift transition to electric mobility. This study is the first to research cooperative behaviour at public charging stations as a way to address improved usage of public charging stations. It does so by viewing public charging stations as a common-pool resource and explains cooperative behaviour from an evolutionary perspective. Current behaviour is analysed using a survey (313 useful responses) and an analysis of large dataset (2.1 million charging sessions) on the use of public charging infrastructure in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. In such a way it identifies the potential, drivers and possible obstacles that electric vehicle drivers experience when cooperating with other drivers to optimally make use of existing infrastructure. Results show that the intention to show direct reciprocal charging behaviour is high among the respondents, although this could be limited if the battery did not reach full or sufficient state-of-charge at the moment of the request. Intention to show direct reciprocal behaviour is mediated by kin and network effects.
