3Agroforestry in the Netherlands is taking a momentum, the professional practice is slowly but increasingly adopting agroforestry as an agricultural practice and clear government efforts are acknowledging the importance of agroforestry asa climate adaptive option that aligns with national goals. However, farmers are still facing a wide variety of challenges which also lie on policy issues. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the current bottlenecks and barriers that farmers perceive and experience in the implementation of agroforestry in the Netherlands. This review has been carried out building upon the results of an online survey where perceived bottlenecks were identified (total N=3,500 farmers and other stakeholders). Based on the aforementioned results the current relevant EC’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) normative provisions andthe Dutch national rules and regulations that promote agroforestry are referred. We also identify the potential bottlenecks that the transition to the new CAP imposes to the implementation of agroforestry. Main bottlenecks fell under three categories, i.e. issues about technical knowledge, business models, and rules and regulations. Main subjects that were raised under the rules and regulations category were unclarity on current provisions at EU and national level (e.g. CAP), registration of crops under agroforestry and related subsidies, governance at national and provincial level. Thereafter the EC’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) normative provisions and the Dutch national rules and regulations that are acting as barriers were linked to these raised subjects. Various CAP provisions concur with previous identified policy issues that are shared with other EU member states, however many require adaptations of rules and regulations at the national, provincial and municipality level and a coordinated governance among these levels.

Daarnaast is het goed voor de bodem en zijn er verdienmogelijkheden voor het onderhouden van singels en hagen op je bedrijf. Dutch policy strives to increase the amount of agroforestry. This pilot study aimed to research the forces and obstacles for this growth, in particular the role of various drivers of change. Therefore we conducted a case study in Lingezegen Park (near Arnhem, The Netherlands), using the transition model of Van der Meulen et al. as a basis. This model describes the connection between the transition of the social and physical realms. Important drivers of change influencing the social and physical realms in Lingezegen Park are the establishment of the park itself, but also the relations between and roles of the various stakeholders and the presence of a change agent. Data was collected via Rapid Rural Appraisal in combination with visualization studies and in depth interviews. The interviews were analyzed using a thematic analysis, with the help of NVIVO-software. The case of Lingezegen Park clearly shows that the transformation of the social realm intertwines with developments in the physical realm. The development of the park, both a change in the physical as well as the social realm, made way for new initiatives in sustainable farming systems such as agroforestry. The overall conclusion is that for the transition towards agroforestry, in addition to all kinds of on-site innovation, it is also necessary to take due account of exogenous important drivers of change, especially the functioning of local networks, land use planning and the presence of change agents. The combined effect of this largely determines opportunities for the growth of agroforestry.

Boeren vinden het niet gemakkelijk om in agroforestry, het combineren van boomteelt en landbouw, te stappen. Eelco Buunk, Albertien Kijne, Derk Jan Stobbelaar en Eurídice Leyequien (allen werkzaam bij hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein) onderzochten welke rol provincies spelen bij het oplossen van de barrières. Volgens hen gaan provincies verschillend met hun rol om en kunnen ze van elkaar leren. In dit artikel leggen ze uit wat er te leren valt om de valkuilen te omzeilen.

Cross-Laminated-Timber (CLT) is an environmentally friendly construction ma-terial which is suitable to replace concrete and steel in mid- and high-rise build-ings. The global usage of CLT is expected to grow annually by 12.6% until 2027. Due to a housing shortage as well as the tightening environmental regulations an increased use of CLT seems likely in The Netherlands. Here we expect the number of wooden residential buildings to rise by around 20% every year until 2030. This could require an annual production of 250.000m3 to 500.000m3 of timber. We conclude that it is feasible to add The Netherlands to the list of CLT pro-ducing countries. Setting up a factory including land and the building can cost anywhere from 14 to 40 million euros. On an annual basis such factory can pro-duce between 20.000m3 and 100.000m3 of CLT for 400 to 2.000 apartments. To guarantee international price competitiveness a production capacity of at least 50.000m3 seems to be needed, while a larger highly automated facility of nearly 100.000m3 would better suit the Dutch context. Because of the limited availability only a part of the required timber for a fac-tory can realistically be of Dutch origin. Creating new Dutch production forests is not economically viable as the forest industry in the Netherlands is already barely profitable and the acquisition of land too expensive or time consuming. It could be beneficial to locate a factory in the vicinity of a Dutch production forest, how-ever a logistically strategic position for importing timber seems more important.

The increasing demand for Prunus africana resources is an opportunity for its conservation and commercial use to support livelihoods in Africa. The objective for this study was to investigate major steps to advance production of P. africana for long-term commercial use in Uganda. Specific objectives were to explore potential production schemes, setbacks in production and strategies to advance it. The study was done by review of literature, documents and interviews with experts. Results indicated Agroforestry and large plantations to be useful schemes for production. Identified setbacks are: low trade in P. africana, unknown returns from production, competing land uses, long growth period, limited market assurance and information. The lack of a resource assessment for P. africana in forests contributes to its low trade which undermines related economic benefits for national development and incentives to commercial production. We propose that a national Quantitative resource assessment of P. africana in forests is one of the crucial steps that should be undertaken to carefully organise and advance sustainable trade to provide rational incentives for commercial production. Subsequently, production should be localised in suitable sites and producers be organised into cooperatives. Further research to improve returns from commercial production of P. africana is needed.
