Professionals are increasingly involved in attempts to understand and address problems with wicked tendencies, which require crossing boundaries between disciplines, organizations and stakeholder perspectives. This multiple-case study investigated six higher professional education courses in order to develop better understanding of how teachers foster the development of students’ boundary-crossing expertise through enhancing relevant learning processes in courses focusing on wicked-problem-solving in interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder contexts. We viewed students’ relevant learning processes as learning mechanisms that foster boundary awareness (identification and reflection) and boundary work (coordination and transformation) and considered teachers to be enablers of such learning processes. Data came from semi-structured interviews with teachers, students and stakeholders, observations and document study. We identified nine interrelated enabling strategies teachers used. To foster students’ observation of wickedness through boundary awareness, they encouraged mutual acquaintance, open exploration, opportunities for learning, and multi-perspectivity. To foster students’ action through boundary work, they encouraged initial contact, joint action and multifaceted perspectives on value creation. To foster the interplay between boundary awareness and work, they encouraged successive refinement and structure while embracing wickedness. Balancing the tension that students experience at boundaries when navigating complexity, uncertainty and value divergence was identified as an important element of these enabling strategies.

Symposiumbijdrage conferentie EARLI SIG 14, 11-14 september 2018, Genève Learning across the contexts of school and the workplace is highly relevant to the VET-sector. This contribution analyses these cross-contextual learning processes with three key issues in mind: (1) guidance by vocational educators, (2) assessment of students’ development and (3) design of VET-learning environments. Guidance, assessment and overarching VET-curriculum designs form the basis for constructive alignment as an approach to optimize conditions for high quality cross-contextual learning processes. We used the theoretical framework of boundary crossing to clarify the complex, multilevel nature of these key issues.

Due to the need to present information in a fast and attractive way, organizations are eager to use information visualisations. This study explores the collision between the different experts involved in the production of these visualisations using the model of trading zones supplemented with the learning mechanisms found in the boundary crossing literature. Results show that that there is not one single good solution to effective interdisciplinary cooperation in the field of information visualisation. Rather, all four types of cooperation that we distinguish – enforced, dominated, fractionated, and attuned – might work well, as long as they are adapted to the situation and the participants accept the constraints of the specific cooperation type they are engaged in. In any case the involved experts and initiators have to understand and incorporate approaches that enhance the cocreative, iterative nature of the production process. In surveying the different forms of collaboration we detect two major forms of trading zones: the one that encompasses the collaboration between an external client and a designer (external trading zone) and the trading zones within an organization between content producer and designer (internal trading zone). Both mechanisms of identifying each other’s expertise and coordinating the different tasks in the production process seem beneficial for the production process.

"The aim of the regional and transnational collaboration within the CoVE SEED project is to develop regional Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs) for sustainable energy education. Continuous boundary crossing occurs throughout this collaborative process. However, limited insight existed into what happens during boundary crossing, what the enablers and barriers to learning across boundaries are, and how this relates to regional and transnational collaboration and learning. This article presents findings from a descriptive case study that explored the flow of knowledge between regional and transnational collaboration and learning. Drawing on project minutes, documented meaningful moments of collaboration, and field observations, the study examined the process of boundary crossing as well as the enablers and barriers involved. The results show that CoVE SEED project partners initially focused on building the community and developing activities aimed at achieving tangible outcomes. Over time, transnational collaboration increasingly served as an enabler for regional learning and development. Brokers played a key role in this process by bridging organisations, countries, and disciplines."

The Dutch heat transition requires a highly context-specific approach. Diverse stakeholders -such as housing corporations, network operators, and residents, must collaborate closely at a neighbourhood level to realise plans. A Dutch study offers insights into professional skills that participants in these complex, local, interdisciplinary collaborative processes may benefit from.
