Jobs of communication professionals are closely linked to transformations in society and therefore the role of these professionals is changing rapidly. Communication students must be prepared for the new demands put on communication professionals in the field. In Ede, a new curriculum in communication was launched in order to enable students to become relevant partners in dialog with society. We can identify three areas in the new curriculum where fundamental transitions have been made, in order to meet the expectations of a profession in transition: 1. Decentralization. In order to create an agile educational environment, we choose flatter structures and more autonomy for development teams (including budgets). Creating educational ownership improved knowledge sharing and idea generation among lecturers. 2. An agile curriculum. We renewed the content of the curriculum and added subjects as online reputation management, web care, training skills, and advanced listening. What’s more: from now on we invest to improve the curriculum every year, in cooperation with stakeholders. Students participate in focus groups about the curriculum and partners in the field are invited as cocreators. 3. The role of lecturers. The ongoing development of the profession has huge implications for the role of the teaching staff. The lecturer used to be the expert. He shared his knowledge with the newcomers, the students. Nowadays lecturers only add value if they continuously gain experience from practice. Therefore, we encourage teachers and students to learn together with partners in the communication field. This dissertation describes a research project about the communication between communication vulnerable people and health care professionals in long-term care settings. Communication vulnerable people experience functional communication difficulties in particular situations, due to medical conditions. They experience difficulties expressing themselves or understanding professionals, and/or professionals experience difficulties understanding these clients. Dialogue conversations between clients and professionals in healthcare, which for example concern health-related goals, activity and participation choices, diagnostics, treatment options, and treatment evaluation, are, however, crucial for successful client-centred care and shared decision making. Dialogue conversations facilitate essential exchanges between clients and healthcare professionals, and both clients and professionals should play a significant role in the conversation. It is unknown how communication vulnerable people and their healthcare professionals experience dialogue conversations and what can be done to support successful communication in these conversations. The aim of this research is to explore how communication vulnerable clients and professionals experience their communication in dialogue conversations in long-term care and how they can best be supported in improving their communication in these conversations.

How do you make student participation visible to the students themselves? At Inholland, students and staff collaborated on a communication strategy for Students as Partners. Students analyzed what resonates with their peers and developed personas, formats, and videos in their own language—resulting in the slogan: “Think along. Talk along. Join in.” “When we started writing down what the problem was… it already felt like our own project.”

This paper describes the changes in communication skills, knowledge and confidence in Speech Language Therapy (SLT) students in conversations with People With Aphasia (PWA) after Training Con-tAct, a Dutch Communication Partner Training. Methods: On a voluntary basis, nine SLT students (2nd yr) completed Training Con-tAct, in which People With Aphasia (PWA) were involved as co-workers. A mixed method design with pre- and post-measures was used to analyze the students’ communication skills, knowledge and confidence. A quantitative video analysis was used to measure changes in students’ communication skills. Besides, a self-report questionnaire was used to measure the changes in students’ knowledge and confidence regarding their communication with PWA. To evaluate the perspectives of the students on Training Con-tAct, additionally a focus group interview was held. Results: Regarding students’ communication skills the outcomes revealed a significantly higher score on the ‘supporting’ competence in students who took part in Training Con-tAct. The mean scores for the ‘acknowledging’ and ‘checking information’ competences did not improve significantly. The outcomes of the questionnaire showed students gained more knowledge and confidence regarding communication with PWA. The focus group interview provided insights into: motivation for participating in Communication Partner Training, content and structure of the training, feedback in CPT, and learning experiences. Conclusion: The present study suggests that SLT students may benefit from Training Con-tAct as the training leads to better skills, more knowledge about aphasia and more confidence in communicating with PWA. Training Con-tAct could be a valuable addition to the curricula of all healthcare disciplines, and eventually support interprofessional collaboration, resulting in improved access to health care, which is important for communication vulnerable people. Further research with a larger sample size and a control group is required.

Intention of healthcare providers to use video-communication in terminal care: a cross-sectional study. Richard M. H. Evering, Marloes G. Postel, Harmieke van Os-Medendorp, Marloes Bults and Marjolein E. M. den Ouden BMC Palliative Care volume 21, Article number: 213 (2022) Cite this articleAbstractBackgroundInterdisciplinary collaboration between healthcare providers with regard to consultation, transfer and advice in terminal care is both important and challenging. The use of video communication in terminal care is low while in first-line healthcare it has the potential to improve quality of care, as it allows healthcare providers to assess the clinical situation in real time and determine collectively what care is needed. The aim of the present study is to explore the intention to use video communication by healthcare providers in interprofessional terminal care and predictors herein.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, an online survey was used to explore the intention to use video communication. The survey was sent to first-line healthcare providers involved in terminal care (at home, in hospices and/ or nursing homes) and consisted of 39 questions regarding demographics, experience with video communication and constructs of intention to use (i.e. Outcome expectancy, Effort expectancy, Attitude, Social influence, Facilitating conditions, Anxiety, Self-efficacy and Personal innovativeness) based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and Diffusion of Innovation Theory. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze demographics and experiences with video communication. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to give insight in the intention to use video communication and predictors herein.Results90 respondents were included in the analysis.65 (72%) respondents had experience with video communication within their profession, although only 15 respondents (17%) used it in terminal care. In general, healthcare providers intended to use video communication in terminal care (Mean (M) = 3.6; Standard Deviation (SD) = .88). The regression model was significant and explained 44% of the variance in intention to use video communication, with ‘Outcome expectancy’ and ‘Social influence’ as significant predictors.ConclusionsHealthcare providers have in general the intention to use video communication in interprofessional terminal care. However, their actual use in terminal care is low. ‘Outcome expectancy’ and ‘Social influence’ seem to be important predictors for intention to use video communication. This implicates the importance of informing healthcare providers, and their colleagues and significant others, about the usefulness and efficiency of video communication.

Our nursing students often do not experience a basis of equality and trust during their clinical placements, in their interactions with patients, clinical supervisors, or other healthcare professionals1,. Connecting or Nonviolent Communication, which focuses on interpersonal rather than job specific communication skills, may provide a common language and basic attitude to shape transdisciplinary communication skills and contribute to educationally safer learning and working climates, vitality and mental health of students and healthcare professionals.
