Investigated if the SSQT allows for meaningful comparisons between patients with rheumatoid arthritis from different countries and explored the dimensionality and invariance of the SSQT dimensions. Based on types of social support, the authors formulated a series of items to measure actual supportive interactions or exchanges of resources over 5 scales: (daily emotional support, problem-oriented emotional support, and social companionship; and daily instrumental support and problem-oriented instrumental support). 739 Ss (mean age 52.4 yrs) from France, Norway, the Netherlands, and Sweden completed the SSQT; mean disease duration was 2.3 yrs. Analyses yielded the intended scales, although the internal consistency of the daily instrumental support scale is questionable. The SSQT is a useful instrument for international comparative research. (PsycLIT Database Copyright 1995 American Psychological Assn, all rights reserved)

The present study aims to contribute to the body of knowledge on HRD in small businesses by providing a detailed investigation of the role that owner-managers play in enabling social learning and performance in small firms. The investigation focusses particularly on the specific relationships of the social-interdependence orientation and social competence of owner-managers with their social learning behaviour, as well as with the performance of their smallbusinesses within the pig-production sector in the Republic of Korea. A survey was conducted amongst nearly 200 Korean ownermanagers of pig farms. The results indicate that social interdependence orientations and social competencies have a significant relationship with social learning behaviour. Self-promotion and a cooperative orientation are especially important, with selfpromotion taking precedence for social learning behaviour of a more ‘internal’ nature, and a cooperative attitude being more important social learning behaviour of a more ‘external’ nature. Social competence and social interdependence did not have a significant relationship with performance, but social learning behaviour did. The results further highlight the importance of individual social characteristics to social learning behaviour occurring outside highly structured educational settings, in addition to demonstrating that the competence and attitudes required are determined by the type of interaction partner.

This dissertation aimed to shed light on the role of the social network in supporting urban at-risk youths. The findings presented highlight the importance of recognizing that at-risk youths’ social sources may not always adequately meet their needs, possibly because the bonding social networks are under some of the same stressors as youth themselves. Findings suggested that this lower social support is often associated, or has consequences for, youths’ wellbeing. The studies also demonstrated the importance of adjusting support to the needs of these youths’ and to provide them with additional instrumental and informational support from bridging social networks. This additional support may come from supportive non-parental adults in mentoring programs. The findings in this dissertation provide empirical evidence for the fundamental role of relationship quality in order to profit from mentoring. Results also indicated that mentoring is not a one-size fits all approach. Moreover, youths’ needs in mentoring may vary along their life stage and intra-individual needs. To conclude, this dissertation illustrates how youths’ social networks and their well-being can benefit from a formal mentor, and offers suggestions of how mentoring can equip youth with skills and competences that outlast the mentoring relation.

Background:
Intellectual disability (ID) is a developmental disorder that causes considerably below-average intellectual performance and adaptive behaviour. In the context of the present study, families raising a child with ID are reported to experience multiple challenges that appear not to be well documented in Pakistan.
Methods and procedures:
Pakistan, which was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan, followed participatory action research, in which the researcher and participants examined their existing experiences of informal social support and then created, implemented, and evaluated actions to strengthen this informal social support. A total of five families (n = 25) participated in the study. These participating families comprise parents, siblings, and significant others, i.e., aunts, uncles, and grandparents, living with the child with ID. Families with children with ID were selected through a school for children with ID who are under 12 years old. This qualitative action research was conducted in two distinct parts, i.e., a) exploratory part and b) action part. This paper presents the findings of the first exploratory part of the study.
Aim:
The exploratory phase aimed to explore and examine the experiences and challenges families may experience with informal social support while caring for a child with an intellectual disability in Karachi, Pakistan.
Findings:
Parents often sacrifice their personal needs and aspirations for their children, leading to decreased tolerance and anxiety. Lack of communication, support, and assistance from family members is another significant issue. Stigmatisation and discrimination from school, relatives, and friends can cause depression and distress. The study emphasises the need for a unified and coordinated approach to support and care. Religious beliefs, siblings, and close friends provide comfort and well-being. When parents manage to connect with similar families, they have the opportunity to express a collective commitment to caregiving.
Conclusion:
To strengthen the situation, families propose enhancing intimacy and competency within homes and taking action at the governmental level. Governments must provide appropriate services, such as nurses supporting families, support groups, and religious traditions, to promote acceptance and holistic development for intellectually disabled children.
