Toekomstbestendige business modellen voor mediadiensten zijn lastig te ontwikkelen door het adembenemend tempo waarin de markt zich vernieuwt. Als ondernemer wil je weten welke concepten werken én standhouden. Ondernemers zijn continue op zoek naar het vergroten van het rendement op hun media investeringen. De vraag voor het programma The Future Now is ontstaan vanuit de vraag van mediaondernemers om ‘businesswise’ te kunnen innoveren; generieke business modellen en tools voor handen te hebben waarmee ze nieuwe diensten kunnen ontwikkelen die toekomstbestendig zijn. De vraag naar wat gaat werken, waarom en hoe speelt een terugkerende rol in de ontwikkeling van nieuwe mediadiensten.

Aiming to re-conceptualize liveness in the social media era, this paper explores the temporality of liveness within the lived experience and media practices of cultural events. Through qualitative analysis of extensive interview material, diaries and media content from three very different Dutch case studies - Oerol Festival 2017, Serious Request 2017, and Pride Amsterdam 2018 – it will shed light on the participants’ experience of ‘time’ within the spatio-temporal proximity of these mediated ‘live’ events.As liveness is mediated attendance to events, the experience of the moment - the ‘now’ of the event - is always accompanied with the awareness of a variety of other moments in time: the moment that your friend watches your Facebook live stream; the algorithmic time that makes your post pop up on Instagram; the moment that you see the photo while back at work and remember the fun you had. As we are skillful media users and knowledgeable participants in event-spheres (Volkmer & Deffner, 2010), the experience of a live moment therein is blended with the idea of re-living it at a later time. Nowness and memory are intertwined as we create mediated memories that enact both future and past, the community and the self (Van Dijck, 2004). In this paper I argue that the prominence of live digital technologies within our deeply mediatized (Couldry & Hepp, 2017) society has made navigating event-spheres a very complex and layered temporal experience, a struggle between living and re-living moments that appear to us as current due to an interplay of immediacy and affinity.

In reflecting on Dutch Christmas shoppers, this article will discuss environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), postmaterialist values hypothesis, and ecological modernization theory. According to the EKC hypothesis, while at the initial stages of industrialization material resources are often used unsustainably, continuing industrialization leads to a threshold after which lead to progressively more sustainable technologies. According to the postmaterialist values hypothesis, only wealthier societies can ‘afford’ to care about the environment, assuming that wealth will lead to development of greater concern about and valuation of environment. Finally, ecological modernization theory postulates that environmental conditions improve with advanced technological development and suggests that enlightened self-interest, economy and ecology can be favourably combined and that productive use of natural resources can be a source of future growth. To prepare medical students appropriately for the management of toxicological emergencies, we have developed a simulation-based medical education (SBME) training in acute clinical toxicology. Our aim is to report on the feasibility, evaluation and lessons learned of this training. Since 2019, each year approximately 180 fifth-year medical students are invited to participate in the SBME training. The training consists of an interactive lecture and two SBME stations. For each station, a team of students had to perform the primary assessment and management of an intoxicated patient. After the training, the students completed a questionnaire about their experiences and confidence in clinical toxicology. Overall, the vast majority of students agreed that the training provided a fun, interactive and stimulating way to teach about clinical toxicology. Additionally, they felt more confident regarding their skills in this area. Our pilot study shows that SBME training was well-evaluated and feasible over a longer period.

[ENG] Water Nation is an artistic research project and short film exploring archival footage of the Institute of Sound & Vision of flooding in The Netherlands. Told from the artist’s perspective it is a reflection on how to connect and make climate change and the Dutch history around water and flooding palpable. Through artistic and AI experiments a short animated film was created. [NL] Water Nation is een artistiek onderzoeksproject en een korte film waarin archiefmateriaal van het Instituut voor Beeld & Geluid over overstromingen in Nederland is verwerkt. Vanuit het perspectief van de kunstenaar is het een reflectie op hoe klimaatverandering en de Nederlandse geschiedenis rond water en overstromingen invoelbaar kunnen worden gemaakt en met elkaar kunnen worden verbonden. Door middel van artistieke en AI-experimenten werd een korte animatiefilm gecreëerd.

Network Applied Design Research (NADR) made an inventory of the current state of Circular Design Research in the Netherlands. In this publication, readers will find a summary of six promising ‘gateways to circularity’ that may serve as entry points for future research initiatives. These six gateways are: Looped Systems; Extension of Useful Lifetime; Servitisation; New Materials and Production Techniques; Information Technology and Digitization; and Creating Public and Industry Awareness. The final chapter offers an outlook into topics that require more profound examination. The NADR hopes that this publication will serve as a starting point for discussions among designers, entrepreneurs, and researchers, with the goal of initiating future collaborative projects. It is the NADR's belief that only through intensive international cooperation, we can contribute to the realization of a sustainable, circular, and habitable world.
