Abstract. The Clean-Tech Adoption Model (C-TAM) explains the adoption process of clean technology. Based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Usage of Technology (UTAUT) combined with qualitative research and empirical data gathering, the model predicts adoption based on the perceived quality, effort, transition, experience and knowledge. Social media introduces a moderating effect, thus legitimizing its effectiveness as a marketing instrument on accelerating the adoption of clean technology. C-TAM is validated; however additional empirical research is necessary. Additionally, the explained variance discrepancy with UTAUT as well as theorizing on the Diffusion of Innovations theory stimulates further research on extra moderators.

In case of a major cyber incident, organizations usually rely on external providers of Cyber Incident Response (CIR) services. CIR consultants operate in a dynamic and constantly changing environment in which they must actively engage in information management and problem solving while adapting to complex circumstances. In this challenging environment CIR consultants need to make critical decisions about what to advise clients that are impacted by a major cyber incident. Despite its relevance, CIR decision making is an understudied topic. The objective of this preliminary investigation is therefore to understand what decision-making strategies experienced CIR consultants use during challenging incidents and to offer suggestions for training and decision-aiding. A general understanding of operational decision making under pressure, uncertainty, and high stakes was established by reviewing the body of knowledge known as Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM). The general conclusion of NDM research is that experts usually make adequate decisions based on (fast) recognition of the situation and applying the most obvious (default) response pattern that has worked in similar situations in the past. In exceptional situations, however, this way of recognition-primed decision-making results in suboptimal decisions as experts are likely to miss conflicting cues once the situation is quickly recognized under pressure. Understanding the default response pattern and the rare occasions in which this response pattern could be ineffective is therefore key for improving and aiding cyber incident response decision making. Therefore, we interviewed six experienced CIR consultants and used the critical decision method (CDM) to learn how they made decisions under challenging conditions. The main conclusion is that the default response pattern for CIR consultants during cyber breaches is to reduce uncertainty as much as possible by gathering and investigating data and thus delay decision making about eradication until the investigation is completed. According to the respondents, this strategy usually works well and provides the most assurance that the threat actor can be completely removed from the network. However, the majority of respondents could recall at least one case in which this strategy (in hindsight) resulted in unnecessary theft of data or damage. Interestingly, this finding is strikingly different from other operational decision-making domains such as the military, police and fire service in which there is a general tendency to act rapidly instead of searching for more information. The main advice is that training and decision aiding of (novice) cyber incident responders should be aimed at the following: (a) make cyber incident responders aware of how recognition-primed decision making works; (b) discuss the default response strategy that typically works well in several scenarios; (c) explain the exception and how the exception can be recognized; (d) provide alternative response strategies that work better in exceptional situations.

This paper elaborates on potential linkages between TNAs and NDCs. TNAs have been conducted by developing countries since 2001 as a participatory process to prioritize technologies for mitigation and adaptation within countries’ national sustainable development contexts. Around 15 years after conducting the first TNA, its bottom-up paradigm was reflected in the Paris Agreement and the concept of NDCs. In their NDCs countries determine actions within their national contexts that contribute to the goal of limiting global warming to well below 2 °C and preferably below 1.5 °C. There are many potential interlinkages between TNAs and NDCs, as noted in earlier papers by the TEC. For example, TEC (2018) compares possible NDC design and implementation steps with those in the TNA guidance, concluding that outputs from one process could be used as inputs for the other. Recent synthesis reports on NDCs and TNAs highlight that the processes refer to each other in several ways. Most recent TNAs use a country’s NDC as a starting point for the analysis.

This study is the first to estimate the size of the informal tourism economy. Using a dynamic general equilibrium model, this paper first estimates the size of the informal tourism economy and then assesses its linkages to key labour market variables in Thailand. Empirical results indicate that: (a) the informal tourism economy grows faster than the formal tourism and aggregate economy; (b) both formal and informal tourism economies absorb the unemployed; (c) the relationship between formal and informal economies is negative in the aggregate but positive in the tourism sector.

The American company Amazon has made headlines several times for monitoring its workers in warehouses across Europe and beyond.1 What is new is that a national data protection authority has recently issued a substantial fine of €32 million to the e-commerce giant for breaching several provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation (gdpr) with its surveillance practices. On 27 December 2023, the Commission nationale de l’informatique et des libertés (cnil)—the French Data Protection Authority—determined that Amazon France Logistique infringed on, among others, Articles 6(1)(f) (principle of lawfulness) and 5(1)(c) (data minimization) gdpr by processing some of workers’ data collected by handheld scanner in the distribution centers of Lauwin-Planque and Montélimar.2 Scanners enable employees to perform direct tasks such as picking and scanning items while continuously collecting data on quality of work, productivity, and periods of inactivity.3 According to the company, this data processing is necessary for various purposes, including quality and safety in warehouse management, employee coaching and performance evaluation, and work planning.4 The cnil’s decision centers on data protection law, but its implications reach far beyond into workers’ fundamental right to health and safety at work. As noted in legal literature and policy documents, digital surveillance practices can have a significant impact on workers’ mental health and overall well-being.5 This commentary examines the cnil’s decision through the lens of European occupational health and safety (EU ohs). Its scope is limited to how the French authority has interpreted the data protection principle of lawfulness taking into account the impact of some of Amazon’s monitoring practices on workers’ fundamental right to health and safety.

Background: Early identification of older cardiac patients at high risk of readmission or mortality facilitates targeted deployment of preventive interventions. In the Netherlands, the frailty tool of the Dutch Safety Management System (DSMS-tool) consists of (the risk of) delirium, falling, functional impairment, and malnutrition and is currently used in all older hospitalised patients. However, its predictive performance in older cardiac patients is unknown. Aim: To estimate the performance of the DSMS-tool alone and combined with other predictors in predicting hospital readmission or mortality within 6 months in acutely hospitalised older cardiac patients. Methods: An individual patient data meta-analysis was performed on 529 acutely hospitalised cardiac patients ≥70 years from four prospective cohorts. Missing values for predictor and outcome variables were multiply imputed. We explored discrimination and calibration of: (1) the DSMS-tool alone; (2) the four components of the DSMS-tool and adding easily obtainable clinical predictors; (3) the four components of the DSMS-tool and more difficult to obtain predictors. Predictors in model 2 and 3 were selected using backward selection using a threshold of p = 0.157. We used shrunk c-statistics, calibration plots, regression slopes and Hosmer-Lemeshow p-values (PHL) to describe predictive performance in terms of discrimination and calibration. Results: The population mean age was 82 years, 52% were males and 51% were admitted for heart failure. DSMS-tool was positive in 45% for delirium, 41% for falling, 37% for functional impairments and 29% for malnutrition. The incidence of hospital readmission or mortality gradually increased from 37 to 60% with increasing DSMS scores. Overall, the DSMS-tool discriminated limited (c-statistic 0.61, 95% 0.56-0.66). The final model included the DSMS-tool, diagnosis at admission and Charlson Comorbidity Index and had a c-statistic of 0.69 (95% 0.63-0.73; PHL was 0.658). Discussion: The DSMS-tool alone has limited capacity to accurately estimate the risk of readmission or mortality in hospitalised older cardiac patients. Adding disease-specific risk factor information to the DSMS-tool resulted in a moderately performing model. To optimise the early identification of older hospitalised cardiac patients at high risk, the combination of geriatric and disease-specific predictors should be further explored.

Parasitoids lay their eggs in or on a host, usually another insect. During foraging, parasitoids can encounter insects that differ in terms of host suitability and quality. At one extreme end of this spectrum are non-hosts that are unsuitable for offspring development.Non-hosts are generally ignored but parasitization does occur and occasionally also results in egg deposition. Here, the authors investigate how oviposition in a non-host influences subsequent foraging behaviour of a parasitoid and whether this is mediated by learning. The study system consists of the endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata and the presumed non-host caterpillar Mamestra brassicae.In the presence of Pieris brassicae hosts and/or their traces (frass), C. glomerata inserted its ovipositor into M. brassicae caterpillars. Eggs were deposited, but all eggs disappeared within 96 h, confirming the non-host status of M. brassicae. In contrast to the expectation, there was no memory retention after oviposition in a non-host and parasitoids did not alter their behaviour with respect to non-host contacts and ovipositions. Instead, C. glomerata became more motivated to forage on a non-host infested leaf.The authors propose that egg deposition in non-hosts by C. glomerata might be due to their high egg load, which is thought to make parasitoids less selective on host quality, especially when they have few reproductive opportunities. In such cases, fitness costs to individual females are low. Egg deposition in non-hosts might ultimately lead to host range expansion if parasitoids overcome the defence response of non-hosts over evolutionary time.

Many nature-based solutions are seen as favourable and effective measures to increase urban resilience during more extreme weather events, by for example decrease high temperatures in summer. Since space is often scarce in urban environments, roofs have received increased attention in mitigating the consequences of climate change in urban areas. This resulted in a variety of roof systems of green and blue-green roofs designed as an integral part of the built environment due to their hydrological, insulative and biodiverse capacities. This study examined the impact of blue-green, and conventional roofs on roof surface temperatures, indoor temperatures and insulative properties of the building. Temperature sensors (IButtons) have been used for summer and winter measurements on roofs for early 20th century buildings in the city of Amsterdam (NL).The results indicate the strongest effect of blue-green roofs on surface temperatures in summer, with significantly lower surface temperatures (2-3°C) than for conventional roofs. During winter days, the surface temperatures were not significantly different on blue-green roofs than on conventional roofs. The measurements in the water crate layers of blue-green roofs show an all year-round temperature buffering effect. During hot summer days, the temperature in the water storage of the blue-green roof was much lower than other measured surfaces (up to 12 °C and 7 °C compared to gravel roofs and the blue-green roof substrate, respectively) and also experienced the least diurnal variation. Similarly, the empty water crate layer showed up to 3 °C higher minimum temperatures during cold winter nights. The measurements also show a small positive systematic effect on the indoor environment under a blue-green roof compared to traditional gravel roof type. The variation in indoor temperature is smaller underneath the blue-green roofs compared to the reference roofs during both warm and cold periods (0.19 – 0.35 °C reduction in STD). This suggests that rooms located under a blue-green roof are less sensitive to the outside air temperature and its natural diurnal variation.Although the effect on indoor thermal comfort seems to be small, blue-green roofs contribute to overall greening of the city. Second, thanks to the water storage the potential for growing biodiverse vegetation is higher than on extensive green roofs.

Mental health problems in adolescence can have a profound influence on school functioning, educational attainment and thus future societal participation. Supported education (SEd) is a potentially useful method for educational professionals to help adolescents with mental health problems in secondary school improve their functioning by stimulating collaboration, ownership, and participation. In this study, we examined the feasibility of SEd in secondary education by examining its acceptability, implementation, and preliminary effectiveness. We performed a mixed-methods study using quantitative data (questionnaires) and qualitative data (interviews) from educational professionals (EP) and adolescents, aged 13–17, about their experiences with a SEd intervention. Regarding the acceptability of the intervention, three main themes emerged: (a) structure, (b) autonomy, and (c) applicability of the intervention. Themes regarding the implementation were: (a) lack of time, (b) personal attitude, (c) mastery, and (d) complexity of the school environment. The findings show that, for those that followed the intervention, SEd is a promising approach to support adolescents with mental health problems to improve their functioning and participation in school. Further research is needed on the effectiveness of the intervention.This article belongs to the Special Issue Children and Young People’s Participation in Health and Well-Being.

Managing dairy excreta as slurry can result in significant emissions of ammonia (NH3) and greenhouse gases (GHGs) during storage and thereafter. Additionally, slurry often has an imbalanced nitrogen (N) to phosphorus (P) ratio for crop fertilization. While various treatments exist to address emissions and nutrient imbalances, each has trade-offs that can result in pollution swapping. An integrated management system, starting with source segregation (SS) in-house to separate faeces and urine into two manageable streams followed by step-wise complementary treatments has been designed to manage nutrients and reduce emissions in the whole chain, but its effect on emissions in storage remains untested. This study investigated NH3, nitrous oxide (N2O), and methane (CH4) emissions and total N losses from integrated storage systems combining SS, mesophilic or thermophilic anaerobic digestion (AD), acidification, drying and zeolite addition and an impermeable cover. These systems were compared to two reference slurry storage systems: in-house uncovered (US) and outside covered (CS). A 30-day lab-scale experiment was conducted at 10 °C, monitoring emissions using an INNOVA1412 gas analyser, while total N losses were assessed using mass balance. Results indicated that the SS fractions treated before covered storage exhibited significantly lower emissions (NH3 or CH4 or both) compared to both reference slurry storage systems (US and CS). Source segregation combined with acidification of urine and AD of faeces at 35 °C and an impermeable cover allowed for a 99% reduction in NH3 emissions, a 45% reduction in CH4 emissions and had no effect on N2O emissions as compared to US. When AD of faeces was conducted at 55 °C instead of 35 °C, the CH4 emission was reduced by 77% compared to US. This study concludes that SS combined with urine and faeces treatment allows a more effective and simultaneous reduction of all emissions in storage as compared to slurry storage systems, while also effectively separating nutrients allowing more precise N and P fertilization with dairy excreta. Further research is necessary to assess emissions and fertilizer value of treated fractions after field application, in addition to the associated costs.
