Dit Trendrapport Open Educational Resources 2013 beschrijft de trends op het gebied van open educational resources (OER) en open onderwijs in binnen- en buitenland, geschreven vanuit de context van het Nederlandse hoger onderwijs. Dat gebeurt aan de hand van vijftien artikelen van Nederlandse experts op het gebied van open en online onderwijs. Ook bevat het vijftien korte intermezzo’s met spraakmakende voorbeelden.

Metacognition comprises both the ability to be aware of one’s cognitive processes (metacognitive knowledge) and to regulate them (metacognitive control). Research in educational sciences has amassed a large body of evidence on the importance of metacognition in learning and academic achievement. More recently, metacognition has been studied from experimental and cognitive neuroscience perspectives. This research has started to identify brain regions that encode metacognitive processes. However, the educational and neuroscience disciplines have largely developed separately with little exchange and communication. In this article, we review the literature on metacognition in educational and cognitive neuroscience and identify entry points for synthesis. We argue that to improve our understanding of metacognition, future research needs to (i) investigate the degree to which different protocols relate to the similar or different metacognitive constructs and processes, (ii) implement experiments to identify neural substrates necessary for metacognition based on protocols used in educational sciences, (iii) study the effects of training metacognitive knowledge in the brain, and (iv) perform developmental research in the metacognitive brain and compare it with the existing developmental literature from educational sciences regarding the domain-generality of metacognition.

How lecturers in higher education handle, or curate, educational resources during course design, has become increasingly important with the growing amount of digitally available educational materials. Despite the recognition of curation in educational literature and the development of two conceptual models, there is a lack of empirical knowledge of lecturers' actual curational practices. Through 23 semi-structured interviews at a Dutch University of Applied Sciences, this study identified six categories of distinguishable but interconnected activities that constitute lecturers' curational behaviour, taking place within the context of course design. These activities are: searching for resources, assessing and selecting resources, creating and editing resources, structuring resources, sharing resources, and soliciting feedback. The findings suggest that lecturers underemphasize the construction of a narrative that relates the resources and are providing students with little didactical support when sharing the resources. This paper offers an empirical a foundation for educational curation and suggests directions for future research to inform lecturers’ course design practices and enhance support for lecturers in this critical task.

Educational escape rooms (EERs) are increasingly used in education as learning innovations for non-digital and game-based learning (GBL) since EERs positively influence student motivation. They are common in educational fields where skills developments are vital such as STEM subjects and healthcare. However, EERs are marginally implemented in entrepreneurship education (EE) because there is a lack of evaluated design elements to guide the creation of EER in this context, which hampers their wider adoption. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated design elements for EERs in EE. We are particularly concerned with experiential EE since EERs are well suited for experiential learning. We used a research-through-design approach and created an EER based on 11 design elements derived from the literature on social cognitive theory, entrepreneurship competence, and gamification. We created and evaluated the EER in two cycles with two diverse groups of students at a university of applied sciences in the Netherlands. We contribute to the literature and practice of experiential EE by presenting evaluated design elements for EERs. We show which design elements work well and which do not. We also present a comprehensively designed EER that educational professionals can implement in their experiential EE programs.

De opleiding Life Sciences & Chemistry in het domein AFL wil aansluiten bij ontwikkelingen in het werkveld en didactisch vernieuwen, gericht op de activering van studenten. Hierbij wordt van een beredeneerde inzet van video veel verwacht, vooral bij de curriculumonderdelen die studenten als lastig ervaren. De onderwijseenheid ‘Basischemie’ (blok 1, jaar 1) wordt gezien als een ‘struikelvak’. Een focusgroep met studenten maakte duidelijk dat niet alleen de stof, maar vooral ook de werkwijze in het hbo verschilt van die in de havo. Daarom is besloten tot een herontwerp van de didactiek. Doel van het onderzoek is samen met de betrokken pionier en docent die dit onderwijsonderdeel verzorgt, een uitwerking met inzet van video’s te genereren en te testen, waarbij de video’s aansluiten bij de hoorcolleges, opdat het ontwerp leidt tot actieve betrokkenheid van studenten bij het onderwijs en een beter begrip van de leerstof. Studenten vinden het logisch om voorafgaand aan een hoorcollege de video’s te bekijken en zijn positief over de gecombineerde aanpak van video’s en hoorcolleges. Het ontwerp heeft het ervaren probleem opgelost: de voorkennis is voorafgaand aan het hoorcollege geactiveerd, de oriëntatie op het hoorcollege vond plaats, en het tijd- en plaatsonafhankelijk leren is versterkt. De docent had in het hoorcollege meer tijd over voor extra verwerkingsopdrachten.

Abstract Educational escape rooms (EERs) are live-action, team-based games used to teach content-related and generic knowledge and skills. Instead of students just playing the EER, we believed that giving them the opportunity to create their own EERs would augment the learning efects of this teaching method. We report on the feasibility, evaluation, and lessons learned of our assignment on an opioid epidemic-based EER. This original teaching method appealed to most students, but the workload was evaluated to be too high. Our lessons learned include the need for sufcient (extrinsic) motivation, careful explanation of the assignment, and small group sizes.

The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences has applied the Multi Actor Multi Criteria Analysis (MAMCA) in their educational and research programmes in various ways. The chapter is based on the experiences within the Faculty of Technology, which has adopted the MAMCA in the minor Urban Logistics. The minor is a 20-week programme that students from different disciplines can choose and for which they obtain 30 ECTS. As part of the minor Urban Logistics, students attend the MAMCA workshop. The workshop was developed in 2015 and has been held every six months since then. This chapter describes how the MAMCA has been applied in three cases: (1) for students; (2) for students and professionals; and (3) by students themselves. The use of the MAMCA is in line with the goals for practical-oriented research as it helps to make education more responsive, improves the quality of graduates and enhances innovation in professional practice.
