In this study we investigated the culture-invariant and culture-dependent nature of ethical sensitivity within the educational contexts of three countries, of which two, Finland and The Netherlands, represent western cultures, and one, Iran, eastern cultures. Our aim was to identify the culturally bound elements of ethical sensitivity in our data. We also enhanced the validity of our instrument, the Ethical Sensitivity Scale Questionnaire (ESSQ), with regard to using it in different cultural contexts.

This chapter provides insight into the culturally-bound nature of ethical sensitivity by examining three case studies from different educational contexts: the Netherlands (n = 622), Finland (n = 864), and Iranian Kurdistan (n = 556). Ethical sensitivity was investigated with the Ethical Sensitivity Scale Questionnaire (Tirri & Nokelainen, 2007, 2011), and a four-factor model was found to capture the essential aspects of ethical sensitivity across culturally diverse contexts. Subsequently, the relationships among the four dimensions were examined in each case study. The analyses reveal that caring by connecting to others was a central dimension of ethical sensitivity across the three cases. Given the other dimensions of ethical sensitivity, the dimension of taking the perspective of others seemed particularly dependent on culture. The consequences of these results for moral education are discussed.

This paper puts forward a conceptual framework to analyse emergence and the development of planned knowledge locations in cities (science and technology parks, creative factories, knowledge hubs, etc.). It argues that the study and the practice of developing these precincts can benefit from explicitly considering the broader territorial context, the time dynamics and the co-evolutionary processes through which they unfold. The advantages of such as framework are illustrated with the support of two European knowledge locations: Arabianranta (Helsinki, Finland) and Biocant (Cantanhede, Portugal).

In this handbook we would like to inform (future) social and public professionals about the results of our extensive comparative research on welfare state reforms in Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands and UK. The research reveals how reforms take place in local practice and gives insights on the implications of social policies on people’s lives. Social policies are defined as social investment in human lives. We evaluated the implementation of social investment policies in practice and studied 20 innovative cases, 2 in each of the above-mentioned countries. Starting from these professional practices, we would like to give (future) professionals more insights in the realities of system change and the new perspectives that come out of it.

Despite the consequences for women’s health, a repeat cesarean section (CS) birth after a previous CS is common in Western countries. Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) is recommended for most women, yet VBAC rates are decreasing and vary across maternity organizations and countries. We investigated women’s views on factors of importance for improving the rate of VBAC in countries where VBAC rates are high. We interviewed 22 women who had experienced VBAC in Finland, the Netherlands, and Sweden. We used content analysis, which revealed five categories: receiving information from supportive clinicians, receiving professional support from a calm and confident midwife/obstetrician during childbirth, knowing the advantages of VBAC, letting go of the previous childbirth in preparation for the new birth, and viewing VBAC as the first alternative for all involved when no complications are present. These findings reflect not only women’s needs but also sociocultural factors influencing their views on VBAC.
