This symposium was brought to life by the need for a detailed overview of the issue both in the context of the new artistic academic degrees and of the historical and and theoretical discourse around the relationship art-science. When bringing together such notions, one cannot do so in the abstract, ignoring the fact that the issue of research in art academies seems to be triggered first of all by the political changes of the new Europe, the need for a unified structure of the EU's educational system.
