SIGNIFICANCE: The impact of dry eye disease on patients' daily lives is understood by optometrists, but they seldom use this understanding in their patient management. PURPOSE: Dry eye disease can significantly impact a person's daily life and is known to cause psychological symptoms. Treating and managing patients with dry eye disease can be challenging, as an approach based solely on signs is unlikely to reflect patients' true burden. Because optometrists play a crucial role in the care of dry eye disease patients, it is necessary to examine their awareness of the negative impact of dry eye disease on patients' daily lives and how they manage this during their consultation time, including diagnosis and management. METHODS: This study has an exploratory, qualitative research design. Twelve semistructured online interviews were conducted with optometrists in second-line eye care through a convenience sample. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed after a thematic analysis. RESULTS: The main findings were that few optometrists actively asked about patients' perceived burden, many optometrists did not mention all the possible treatment options or practical advice that could benefit dry eye disease patients, and few were aware of the possible help that other health care providers could provide, besides the optometrist. CONCLUSIONS: Dutch optometrists are aware of the impact that dry eye disease can have on their patients' daily lives, but seldom use this information as part of their management plan.
This chapter focuses on the interconnection between religion and young people's view on Europe. The results of this empirical inquiry are less than optimistic: if anything religion seems to be more of a stumbling block than an incentive for the partaking in the building of a unified Europe.
Societal changes force hospitals to improve their patient journeys. And although hospitals and hotels do differ on quite some aspects, there are also a lot of similarities. Moreover, hotels are known for doing their utmost to please their guests and to focus on their guest experiences. Therefore, hospitals are looking at what they can learn form the hotel industry. The Antoniushove is anxious to retain its high quality and where possible to improve it. That is why, together with the Hotelschool, they want to investigate where the patient journey can be improved. Medical students are ‘critical thinkers’ as they are educated in an academic and evidence based environment. Hotelschool students are generally seen as having excellent ‘soft skills’ like creativity and problem solving skills. Critical thinking and soft skills are both seen as important 21st century skills. This research is a first exploration of where there are possibilities for improvement on patient journeys. Couples existing of one medical student and one hotelschool student will form a team and follow breast and colorectal patients during their hospital visit. This combination of students has never occurred before in such a research. It will allow students from both backgrounds to look at the patient journey though the eyes of the other and to learn form each other’s competences. Main research methods to be applied will be shadowing, guided tours and interviews, all of course with informed consent. Medical staff from the Antoniushove and research experts form the hotelschool will supervise the research. This research is a preliminary research for a bigger research and should result in grant proposal for the follow-up research.
In the field of product design, a two-sided problem exists. On the one hand, product designers wish to market their products but often face obstacles when attempting to bring these products to the market. On the other hand, for businesses in today’s economic landscape it is crucial to consistently search for new products and opportunities in order to stay innovative. Unfortunately, there is no accessible database where these new products can easily be found. Our solution is an online platform that allows for design to be easily accessible, through which collaboration between designers and firms will be facilitated. Our online platform will bring designers and design companies from all around the world together, breaking the current local barriers. Megosu provides designers with a platform to upload their design ideas products publicly to be seen by companies all over the globe. Our goal for companies is to help them find designers/products through our platform. The challenge we are faced with is a validation of our business idea in the eyes of the companies. Do we create enough value for businesses to look for new products/products designers through Megosu compared to deploying time and resources to conduct this search themselves? In order to do this we will meet with 30 companies and present them with various common scenarios involved in the search of products/product designers. This challenge is aimed at understanding how we should capture the value that we create for businesses and what additional elements we can incorporate in our platform to create additional value. This will be done by building on our current prototype through our development team according to the insights derived from this challenge. These functionalities will be added to our current pilot version with help of our front & back-end software development team.
