A recent European Commission report revealed the discrepancies in e-health adoption amongst older people between various European countries (Kubitschke, 2010). Uptake rates, in terms of the percentage of people aged over 65 using e-health technologies, differ for example, for social alarms between around 3% in Germany and the Netherlands, 6-10% the Nordic countries and 15% in the United Kingdom. Even within individual countries there are areas with vastly different adoption rates (Cooney, 2010). Considering that the European population is ageing and the life expectancy at birth is still rising significantly (European Commission, 2011), there is a need for government policy on ageing in place to keep people at home as long as possible and there are chances for producers and providers of ALT solutions to increase their sales. The most important barrier to overcome is the low adoption rate of ALT solutions. Governments, companies and society as a whole need to find out why individuals prefer not to use ALT products and/or services even though they can be seen as potential users.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of a twenty-week power-assisted exercise intervention in people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities and to evaluate the potential beneficial effects of this intervention.DESIGN: Pilot randomised controlled trial.SETTING: A large-scale twenty-four-hour residential facility in the Netherlands.SUBJECTS: Thirty-seven persons with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities.INTERVENTION: Participants in the intervention group received a power-assisted exercise intervention three times a week for thirty minutes over a twenty-week period. Participants in the control group received care as usual.MAIN MEASURES: Trial feasibility by recruitment process and outcomes completion rates; intervention feasibility by programme compliance rates; potential outcomes by functional abilities, alertness, body composition, muscle tone, oxygen saturation, cardiovascular fitness and quality of life.RESULTS: Thirty-seven participants were recruited ( M age = 32.1, SD = 14.6) and were randomly allocated to intervention ( n = 19) and control ( n = 18) groups. Programme compliance rates ranged from 54.2% to 97.7% with a mean (SD) of 81.5% (13.4). Oxygen saturation significantly increased in the intervention group. Standardised effect sizes on the difference between groups in outcome varied between 0.02 and 0.62.CONCLUSIONS: The power-assisted exercise intervention and the trial design were feasible and acceptable to people with profound intellectual and multiple disabilities living in a residential facility. This pilot study suggests that the intervention improves oxygen saturation, but further implementation with the aim of improving other outcomes should be considered with caution.
Psychosocial problems related to social isolation are a growing issue for wellbeing and health and have become a significant societal problem. This is especially relevant for children and adults with chronic illnesses and disabilities, and those spending extended periods in hospitals or permanently living in assisted living facilities. A lack of social relationships, social connectivity, and the inability to travel freely leads to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Loneliness interventions often use mediated environments to improve the feeling of connectedness. It has been proven that the utilization of haptic technologies enhances realism and the sense of presence in both virtual environments and telepresence in physical places by allowing the user to experience interaction through the sense of touch. However, the technology application is mostly limited to the experiences of serious games in professional environments and for-entertainment-gaming. This project aims to explore how haptic technologies can support the storytelling of semi-scripted experiences in VR to improve participants’ sense of presence and, therefore, the feeling of connectedness. By designing and prototyping the experience, the project aims to obtain insights and offer a better understanding of designing haptic-technology-supported storytelling and its potential to improve connectedness and become a useful tool in isolation interventions. The project will be conducted through the process of participants’ co-creation.
Globally, we face the urgent task of the transition to a climate neutral and circular society. Biobased materials are regenerative and add considerably less to the carbon stock in the atmosphere. Therefore they get high priority in several missions of the KIA theme “Energy transition and Sustainability”. In recent years significant progress has been made in biobased materials technology. In the “Circular Biobased Delta” region the Universities of Applied Sciences have grown into strong research partners in this field. However, successful business cases are few and society reacts only hesitantly. Accelerating the transition to biobased materials asks for a strategic move to a truly interdisciplinary collaboration. In response, in the Living Ecosystem programme, technological, economic and societal researchers from the three Universities of Applied Sciences (HZ, RUAS, Avans) join to form a core group. Together they will align and extend their research in shared topics such as biobased ingredients, circular building, and bioplastics. Around these topics, cross-sectoral communities within the existing regional ecosystem will be organised, connected and called upon to articulate interdisciplinary research projects and valorise the outcomes. The partners have different levels of achievement together forming a strong research group. They will share their experiences to collectively improve the volume, impact and quality of their research. In doing so they aim to become leaders within their separate disciplines and collectively evolve into an (inter)nationally recognised top-rank research community. The core group of researchers is assisted by a strong consortium, whose members represent the different topics and functions in the ecosystem. The consortium will advise the core group in defining and valorising their research. The regional ecosystem already hosts many “field labs”. The programme aims to create focus in their utilisation for an impactful programme of development, education and communication activities.
Indonesia’s peat forests remain severely threatened by forest fires, oil palm plantation development and extractive industries, which leads to biodiversity loss, increased emissions of greenhouse gases, and the marginalization of Indigenous Peoples and local communities. In 2008 the Government of Indonesia introduced the Social Forestry Programme under which Indigenous Peoples and local communities can acquire a 35-year management permit. Since then, about 10 percent of Indonesian State Forest has been designated for community-based forest conservation and restoration initiatives. The devolution of authority to the local level has created a new playing field. The Social Forestry Programme reverses more than a century of centralistic forest policy, and requires a fundamental re-orientation of all actors working in the forestry sector. The central question underlying this proposal is how Dutch civil society organizations (applied universities and NGOs) can effectively support Indigenous Peoples and local communities in the protection and restoration of peat forests in Indonesia. This project aims to set up a Living Lab in Ketapang District in West Kalimantan to study, identify and test novel ways to work together with a variety of stakeholders to effectively conserve and restore peat forest. In Ketapang District, Tropenbos Indonesia has assisted three Village Forest Management Groups (Pematang Gadung, Sungai Pelang and Sungai Besar) in securing a Social Forestry Permit. Students from three Dutch Universities (Van Hall Larenstein, Aeres Hogeschool and Inholland) will conduct research in partnership with students from Universitas Tanjungpura on the integration of local ecological knowledge and technical expertise, on the economic feasibility of community-based forestry enterprises, and on new polycentric governance structures. The results of these studies will be disseminated to policy makers and civil society groups working in Indonesia, using the extensive networks of IUCN NL and Tropenbos Indonesia.
