This paper provides an introduction to the special issue of the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events on Festival Cities and Tourism. It provides a contextualisation of the conversations surrounding the relationship between cities and their festivals during the Covid-19 pandemic. Focussing on the ‘festival city’ of Edinburgh, we examine how festival organisers reacted to the challenges of the pandemic, and how they strove to maintain contact with audiences and other stakeholders. We then review the different contributions to the special issue, ranging from festivalisation and suburban food festivals in Barcelona to an art festival in Dublin, the European Capital of Culture in Hungary and the festival portfolio of Hong Kong.

In 2021, Citython editions were held for the European cities of Eindhoven (Netherlands), Bilbao and Barcelona (Spain), Hamburg (Germany), and Lublin (Poland). Within this project, BUAS contributed to the organization of CITYTHON Eindhoven in cooperation with CARNET (an initiative by CIT UPC) and City of Eindhoven – an event which gives young talent the opportunity to work with mentors and experts for the development of innovative urban solutions. Participants of CITYTHON Eindhoven worked on three challenges:- Traffic safety in school zones - Travel to the campus- Make the city healthy The event took place between 18 May and 2 June 2021 with various experts, for example from ASML, City of Eindhoven and University of Amsterdam, giving inspirational talks and mentoring students throughout the ideation and solutions development process. The teams presented their solutions during the Dutch Technology Week and the winners were announced by Monique List-de Roos (Alderman Mobility and Transport, City of Eindhoven) on 2 June 2021. The role of BUAS within this project was to assist City of Eindhoven with the development of the challenges to be tackled by the participating teams, and find relevant speakers and mentors who would be supporting the students for the development of their solutions and jury members who would determine the winning teams. The project ended with a round table “Green and Safe Mobility for all: 5 Smart City(thon) Case studies” on November 17 organized as part of Smart City Expo World Congress 2021 in Barcelona. This project is funded by EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union. The projectThe overarching goal of DIGNITY, DIGital traNsport In and for socieTY, is to foster a sustainable, integrated and user-friendly digital travel eco-system that improves accessibility and social inclusion, along with the travel experience and daily life of all citizens. The project delves into the digital transport eco-system to grasp the full range of factors that might lead to disparities in the uptake of digitalised mobility solutions by different user groups in Europe. Analysing the digital transition from both a user and provider’s perspective, DIGNITY looks at the challenges brought about by digitalisation, to then design, test and validate the DIGNITY approach, a novel concept that seeks to become the ‘ABCs for a digital inclusive travel system’. The approach combines proven inclusive design methodologies with the principles of foresight analysis to examine how a structured involvement of all actors – local institutions, market players, interest groups and end users – can help bridge the digital gap by co-creating more inclusive mobility solutions and by formulating user-centred policy frameworks.The objectivesThe idea is to support public and private mobility providers in conceiving mainstream digital products or services that are accessible to and usable by as many people as possible, regardless of their income, social situation or age; and to help policy makers formulate long-term strategies that promote innovation in transport while responding to global social, demographic and economic changes, including the challenges of poverty and migration.The missionBy focusing on and involving end-users throughout the process of designing policies, products, or services, it is possible to reduce social exclusion while boosting new business models and social innovation. The end result that DIGNITY is aiming for is an innovative decision support tool that can help local and regional decision-makers formulate digitally inclusive policies and strategies, and digital providers design more inclusive products and services.The approachThe DIGNITY approach combines analysis with concrete actions to make digital mobility services inclusive over the long term. The approach connects users’ needs and requirements with the provision of mobility services, and at the same time connects those services to the institutional framework. Aanleiding Jaarlijks wordt een groot aantal kinderen in Nederland ernstig ziek en een deel van hen verblijft voor langere tijd in het ziekenhuis. Het gaat (o.a.) om de afdelingen oncologie (kanker), hematologie (leukemie) en longziekten. Kinderen die lang in het ziekenhuis liggen en intensieve behandelingen ondergaan, ervaren veel stress, angst en pijn. Voor deze kinderen zou de inzet van robotdieren die in staat zijn tot sociale en affectieve interactie een aanvulling kunnen zijn op de huidige spelvormen met poppen of echte dieren. Robotdieren zijn altijd beschikbaar (in tegenstelling tot echte dieren), interactief, hun gedrag is op het kind af te stemmen en ze kunnen gemakkelijk schoongemaakt en gedesinfecteerd worden. Doelstelling Hoe kunnen professionals in de zorg voor kinderen op de afdelingen waar hoge eisen aan hygiëne worden gesteld, effectief robotdieren inzetten? Dat is de centrale vraag in dit RAAK-project. Het doel is een brede toepassing van robotdieren in kinderziekenhuizen te realiseren. Er vindt praktijkgericht onderzoek plaats, dat zich richt op afdelingen waar kinderen (tot 10 jaar) lang en veelal intensief worden behandeld. Robotdieren zullen op verschillende afdelingen van de deelnemende (kinder)ziekenhuizen worden ingezet. De gegevens die de onderzoekers verzamelen hebben betrekking op zowel de perceptie van de werkzaamheid als de praktische ervaringen van betrokken professionals en ouders. Beoogde resultaten Het onderzoek krijgt een praktische uitwerking in de vorm van een handleiding voor zorgprofessionals voor de inzet van robotdieren, suggesties voor therapeutische spelvormen, een workshop voor verpleegkundigen en pedagogisch medewerkers en een afsluitend seminar op het gebied van zorgrobotica. Nieuwe inzichten worden verwerkt in het hoger beroepsonderwijs.
