This publication, which is the result of the symposia that CAREM held in 2010 and 2011, contains 12 contributions in five sections. Together, they provide an overview of trends and new directions in internationalisation as well as insights into current and future research.

ABSTRACT This article argues that the role of the lecturer in an internationalised higher education institution is not limited to teaching internationally or interculturally diverse groups of students. Teaching staff members will normally be required to undertake a variety of tasks, which require different competences. In addition, they will need specific competences to be able to function well in an international working environment. In order to foster the discussion on the topic of staff competences in relation to internationalisation, this article suggests the use an ‘International Competences Matrix.’ This HRM tool is meant to alert both teaching staff and their heads of department to the fact that working in an international environment requires new and additional competences and that training teaching staff

This report contains an analysis of the AMP1’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. It aims to assess the external perceptions about the entrepreneurial ecosystem of the Metropolitan Area of Porto and the key variables to work on. We systematically analyse the perception of Porto as entrepreneurial ecosystem in the AMP itself, based social media analysis and on interviews with entrepreneurs and other stakeholders in the Porto ecosystem. As a reference case, we also conducted a survey and interviews in Amsterdam. This helps to compare the situation in AMP with that in Amsterdam. The analysis helped to understand the current strengths and weaknesses of the AMP’s ecosystem, seen from the eyes of insiders and outsiders. In particular, we focused on two key features: internationalisation and the role of the wider region.
