In this critical review article, Isaac and Platenkamp present the case that tourism is not isolated from the world's dramatic situations in which humanity is at stake. Their argument principally centers on the devastating historical and contemporary conflict in Palestine and its relations with tourism. In this article, Isaac and Platenkamp maintain that (in relation to current happenings in Palestine) ethical and moral argumentation would be beside the point, and might even be a "cynical" exercise. They suggest that the conflict there is imbued with many kinds of normative argumentation. It is their view that positions need to be taken with regard to "Palestine," as in all extreme circumstances, where at the same time respect for the other positions becomes crucial. In this critical review article, therefore, Arendt's idea of "agora" will be introduced, in order to create a space where these "respectful positions" can be taken in a public arena and in order to contribute to a possible peaceful development. To Isaac and Platenkamp, tourism could enable this sort of "peaceful development" and could promote or help empower conditions where violence would be excluded, and where different sorts of "argumentation" could be generated and heard about these so-called "controversial spaces." In these respects, they maintain that tourism is a challenging field, because it has (itself) many faces-and they argue that such scenarios for "tourism" indeed could apply/should be applied for many controversial other spaces like Nepal and Burma (for instance) where (as in Palestine) the original population has no say in any economic development, such as that of tourism. But Isaac and Platenkamp recognize that (even in Burma) resistance against injustice can never be destroyed. Their own principal focus remains targeted upon Palestine, though. There, tourism is known to have "an incredibly high potential," despite the fact that (in their view) a strong and powerful "Israeli self" indeed controls the "humiliated Palestinian other." Thus, to our two reviewers in the Netherlands, therefore, tourism seems to be a communicative activity that might enable the implementation of Arendt's idea of and about "the agora." Isaac and Platenkamp suggest that there is no violence in the agora, itself, because only the force of argumentation rules. there.

Even though classroom discussion is considered an essential element of citizenship education, research indicates that pre-vocational students have fewer opportunities to practice with these discussions than their pre-academic peers. To provide more insight into pre-vocational teaching strategies to facilitate citizenship-related classroom discussions that allow for variation in familiarity with discussion, we analyzed observations of plenary discussion moments during 26 lessons at three Dutch secondary schools. Classrooms less familiar with discussion seem to benefit from a focus on structural aspects of discussion and avoiding strict content regulation, whereas classrooms more familiar with discussion profit from reflection on both process and content.

Computers are promising tools for providing educational experiences that meet individual learning needs. However, delivering this promise in practice is challenging, particularly when automated feedback is essential and the learning extends beyond using traditional methods such as writing and solving mathematics problems. We hypothesize that interactive knowledge representations can be deployed to address this challenge. Knowledge representations differ markedly from concept maps. Where the latter uses nodes (concepts) and arcs (links between concepts), a knowledge representation is based on an ontology that facilitates automated reasoning. By adjusting this reasoning towards interacting with learners for the benefit of learning, a new class of educational instruments emerges. In this contribution, we present three projects that use an interactive knowledge representation as their foundation. DynaLearn supports learners in acquiring system thinking skills. Minds-On helps learners to deepen their understanding of phenomena while performing experiments. Interactive Concept Cartoons engage learners in a science-based discussion about controversial topics. Each of these approaches has been developed iteratively in collaboration with teachers and tested in real classrooms, resulting in a suite of lessons available online. Evaluation studies involving pre-/post-tests and action-log data show that learners are easily capable of working with these educational instruments and that the instruments thus enable a semi-automated approach to constructive learning.

"Je kunt niet op Bonaire wonen en niets van Bonaire afweten, dan ben je een half mens” Duidelijke taal van juf Sonia Janga. Ze is remedial teacher op het Integraal Kind Centrum (IKC) van de Bonairiaanse basisschool Kolegio Kristu Bon Wardador. Ze deed deze uitspraak toen ze door ons werd geïnterviewd over het Bonairiaans burgerschapsprogramma, dat recent voor vier basisscholen op het eiland is ontwikkeld. De noodzaak om een burgerschapsprogramma te ontwikkelen kwam voort uit het feit dat het onderwijs op Bonaire – in de hoedanigheid van bijzondere gemeente binnen het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden – uitgaat van vrijwel dezelfde richtlijnen als voor scholen in Europees Nederland. Daar hoort de burgerschapsopdracht uit 2021 ook bij. In deze bijdrage staan we achtereenvolgens stil bij: 1) de visie achter en uitgangspunten voor het betekenisvolle Bonairiaans burgerschapsonderwijs, 2) de wijze waarop scholen dit burgerschapsonderwijs hebben ontwikkeld en geïmplementeerd en 3) succesfactoren en uitdagingen die de scholen tijdens het proces ondervonden.Inzichten over het Bonairiaanse burgerschapsonderwijsprogramma zijn ook relevant voor scholen in Europees Nederland, die een (cultureel) diverse leerlingpopulatie hebben: ook zij moeten stilstaan bij de vraag welk (burgerschaps)onderwijs voor hun leerlingen betekenisvol is.

In 'Ecodemocracy in the Wild: If existing democracies were to operationalize ecocentrism and animal ethics in policy-making, what would rewilding look like?' Helen Kopnina, Simon Leadbeater, Paul Cryer, Anja Heister, and Tamara Lewis present a democratic approach to considering the interests of entities and the correlation of rights of nature within it. According to the authors , ecodemocracy's overarching potential is to establish the baseline principles that dethrone single species domination and elevate multiple living beings as stakeholders in all decision-making. They provide insights on how ecodemocracy could become manifest and what it takes to achieve mult-species justice. A unique contribution in this chapter is the notion of ecodemocracy in rewilding , exemplified bij the controversial Dutch rewilding experiment in Oostvaardersplassen. The authors discuss the complexities of decision-making in the interest of different species and the challenges that arise when implementing such politics.

While tourism and air transport are recovering from the impacts of the Covid pandemic, it seems timely to draw a synthetic view of future stakes combining the following topics: the greenhouse gas emissions scenarios for tourism, regarding which recent work has improved their understanding; the climatic impact of aviation, almost 60% of which is due to non-CO 2 emissions; alternative fuels (biofuels, E-fuels, hydrogen) and engine designs (fuel cells...) which are complex and controversial issues, and whose potentials should be assessed regarding their timing, environmental impacts, and their ability to meet long distance travel requirements. This paper analyses the extent to which the new options regarding fuels and engines can help decarbonize tourism and air transport. The answer is that they can partly contribute but do not render obsolete previous work on substitutions between types of tourism (short versus long distance...), between transport modes (ground transport versus air), length of stay, etc. Following this step, the paper deals with the position of aviation players and the type of arguments they use. We conclude on the necessity to make strategic choices among the options to avoid wasting investments.

Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) is used to describe the knowledge teachers use to teach a specific subject to a specific audience. Although PCK is linked to student success and motivation, relatively little is known about the PCK of geography teachers. Through a mixed methods approach, we surveyed a group of 73 Dutch pre-service teachers in their final year of geography teacher education. We used the PCK-consensus model to address both PCK-on action (teacher knowledge) and PCK-in action (teacher practice). We investigated the former through a CoRe-assignment and the latter through a quantitative survey. Teacher’s PCK-in action focussed on teacher-centred lessons with ample attention for visualisations, current events, and efforts to engage students. The results for PCK-on action confirmed the content dependency of PCK. Pre-service teachers chose different geographical topics and used different goals and strategies when teaching these topics. In this context, we also found that they experienced difficulties when teaching controversial issues. In a final step, we combined the results of both methods for 9 teachers in individual PCK portraits. These portraits show that coherence between PCK-elements and, therefore, PCK-quality is still weak for most pre-service teachers. Consequently, their fragile subject matter knowledge seems to influence their developing PCK.

Background & aims: Optimal nutritional support during the acute phase of critical illness remains controversial. We hypothesized that patients with low skeletal muscle area and -density may specifically benefit from early high protein intake. Aim of the present study was to determine the association between early protein intake (day 2–4) and mortality in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients with normal skeletal muscle area, low skeletal muscle area, or combined low skeletal muscle area and -density. Methods: Retrospective database study in mechanically ventilated, adult critically ill patients with an abdominal CT-scan suitable for skeletal muscle assessment around ICU admission, admitted from January 2004 to January 2016 (n = 739). Patients received protocolized nutrition with protein target 1.2–1.5 g/kg/day. Skeletal muscle area and -density were assessed on abdominal CT-scans at the 3rd lumbar vertebra level using previously defined cut-offs. Results: Of 739 included patients (mean age 58 years, 483 male (65%), APACHE II score 23), 294 (40%) were admitted with normal skeletal muscle area and 445 (60%) with low skeletal muscle area. Two hundred (45% of the low skeletal muscle area group) had combined low skeletal muscle area and -density. In the normal skeletal muscle area group, no significant associations were found. In the low skeletal muscle area group, higher early protein intake was associated with lower 60-day mortality (adjusted hazard ratio (HR) per 0.1 g/kg/day 0.82, 95%CI 0.73–0.94) and lower 6-month mortality (HR 0.88, 95%CI 0.79–0.98). Similar associations were found in the combined low skeletal muscle area and -density subgroup (HR 0.76, 95%CI 0.64–0.90 for 60-day mortality and HR 0.80, 95%CI 0.68–0.93 for 6-month mortality). Conclusions: Early high protein intake is associated with lower mortality in critically ill patients with low skeletal muscle area and -density, but not in patients with normal skeletal muscle area on admission. These findings may be a further step to personalized nutrition, although randomized studies are needed to assess causality.

In dit project bundelden ontwerpbureau DesignArbeid, het lectoraat Image in Context van Academy Minerva en kunstruimte Sign de krachten om jonge kunstenaars in staat te stellen om in door henzelf gevormde teams de mogelijkheden van de publieke ruimte begin 21 eeuw te onderzoeken en zichtbaar te maken. De straat als galery waarin projecten in een tijdslijn na elkaar eigen vormen van counter public space (Klug ..) kunnen realiseren. De kunstenaars zetten zich uiteen met actuele kwesties waarvoor nieuwe vormen van uitwisseling en participatie werden ontwikkeld: de klimaatcrisis tastbaar in het stijgende water, de rol van de vrouw binnen de studentenvereniging, vervreemding in het publiek domein, ons koloniaal verleden zichtbaar in onze publieke ruimte, propaganda achter grote stadsevents, het gemak waarmee ons fakenews op de mouw gespeld kan worden en de wijze waarop publiek en privaat domein in elkaar overlopen.De vraag die voor ons allen leidend is: Hoe kunnen kunstenaars en ontwerpers interventies doen die eraan bijdragen dat we als autonoom denkende mensen weer verbinding krijgen met wat Bruno Latour (2019) het Aardse noemt. Het Aardse als zijnde een concept dat ons helpt om de richting aan te geven waarheen we ons moeten bewegen in een bewustzijn dat de wereld niet meer bestaat uit een omgeving waar mensen zich in bevinden, maar uit een krachtenveld, een ecologie, waar we onderdeel van zijn. De onderzoekers van het lectoraat zoeken de conceptuele invalshoeken die ons helpen om zichtbaar te maken welke mogelijkheden de kunst heeft om het hoofd te bieden aan de vele vormen van propaganda en disciplinering in het begin van de 21 e eeuw die dit onmogelijk willen maken. Daarom vindt u in deze publicatie naast een schets van de verschillende interventies die de deelnemende kunstenaars ontwikkelden, ook de verschillende conceptuele perspectieven waar de onderzoekers uit het lectoraat mee werken.De hier gepresenteerde artistieke praktijken zijn een moment in de ontwikkeling van de kunstenaars, het gevolg van een scala aan ontmoetingen die eraan vooraf zijn gegaan en de consekwentie van een dynamiek die ze op een geven moment met elkaar in gang hebben durven zetten. Zonder de moed tot handelen was er nooit iets gebeurd. De gepresenteerde concepten zijn de diepe gronden waar een onderzoeker pas na verloop van tijd op durft te gaan bouwen. Deze concepten kunnen iets teweegbrengen. In de ontmoetingen kan het concept zich gronden en verbreden en kunnen de artistieke praktijken nieuwe betekenislagen krijgen. Samen helpen ze ons reflecteren op de nieuwe rollen van kunstenaars en ontwerpers in de openbare ruimte als publiek domein.

ObjectiveThe Joint Effort Initiative (JEI) is an international collaboration of clinicians, researchers, and consumer organisations with a shared vision of improving the implementation of osteoarthritis management programs (OAMPs). This study aimed to identify JEI's future priorities and guide direction. DesignA two-part international survey to prioritise topics of importance to our membership and research stakeholders. Survey one presented a list of 40 topics under 5 themes. Consenting participants were asked to choose their top three topics in each theme. A short list of 25 topics was presented in survey two. Participants were asked to rank the importance (100-point NRS scale, 100 = highest priority). Response frequency (median, IQR) was used to rank the top priorities by theme. Results Ninety-five participants completed survey one (61% female, 48% clinicians) and 57 completed survey two. The top ranked topic/s were: i. Promotion and advocacy: support training for health professionals (median 85, IQR 24). ii. Education and training: incorporating behaviour change into OAMPs (80, 16), advanced OA skills (80, 30), and integration of OA education into clinical training (80, 36). iii. Improving OAMPs delivery: regular updates on changes to best-evidence OA care (84, 24). iv. Future research: improve uptake of exercise, physical activity, and weight-loss (89, 16). v. Enhancing relationships, alliances, and shared knowledge: promote research collaborations (81, 30), share challenges and opportunities for OAMP implementation (80, 23). ConclusionsThese topics will set the JEI's research and collaboration agenda for the next 5 years and stimulate ideas for others working in the field.
