Dutch secondary school pupils seldom speak the foreign language in class, citing anxiety as a primary factor (Haijma, 2013). Implementing improvisational drama techniques (IDTs), however, could help ameliorate this situation by generating positive affective reactions, such as confidence and joy, and in turn stimulate pupils to speak. The concept IDT in this study contains two key elements. Firstly, participants take on roles in fictitious situations. Secondly, the activities must elicit spontaneous speech as to offer language learners opportunities to practice real-life communication, which is central to the goal of this research. The question driving this study was: What types of IDTs induce positive affective reactions among pupils and, as such, have the potential to stimulate spoken interaction in FL classrooms? The study yielded 77 IDTs associated with positive affective reactions through a literature review and an analysis of student teacher reflections on their IDT use in their English classrooms. This combined evidence lends credence to the conception that it could be the essence of improvisational drama that generates positive reactions, rather than the type of activity—the essence being an invitation to enter a fictional world, combined with the improvisational element that readies learners for spontaneous interactions.
From the article: "The vast amount of previous research on project management competence does not provide a basis for educational needs. Analyzing previous research poses two challenges: the lack of a uniform list of competences, necessitating a taxonomy, and the use of importance as a criterion, favoring general important competences. Criticality is introduced as the competence a project manager adds to the team. Validation research using criticality and the taxonomy among experienced Dutch project managers is more comprehensive and provides a less focus on general important competences than previous research. Criticality focuses more on the essence of the profession."

In the SensEQuake project, the Research Centre for Built Environment NoorderRuimte of Hanze University of Applied Sciences, StabiAlert, Target Holding and NHL Stenden Leeuwarden are investigating the following question:How can we provide relevant and understandable information to support decision makers when an earthquake has occurred?In case of a crisis such as an earthquake, parties such as the provincial government, large company sites, airports or hospitals need information on the scope and severity of the effect of the crisis.Systematic updates of the actual situation on site are of the essence for emergency services. At present only a small amount of the data necessary for this information needed is being collected. And the data that is collected is not processed into relevant and easily understandable information for the decision makers. This project aims to fill this gap.The objective of the project is to integrate the existing sensor technologies into a decision support system, allowing a wider and more immediate use of sensor data for public interest, particularly in crisis times.A heat-map will be produced based on scenario earthquakes and loss (hazard and risk assessment) estimation tools. After running several scenario quakes, critical points in respect to the expected damages and the distribution of existing sensors will be defined. More sensors in critical locations will also be placed to create a high enough resolution.
