Collaborative data practices in the neighborhood

An increasing amount of cities are trying to increase civic engagement by using digital tools and platforms which gather data in a variety of ways on relevant topics within the city. Tools and platforms that focus on handling easy to fix issues on a local scale such as broken streetlights have been successfully implemented in cities already. In this paper a case study is described which aimed to retrieve data from citizens about a more complex local challenge in a neighborhood in Amsterdam. Furthermore, it has been investigated how the municipality could use the collected data as input for policy making. By making a participatory mapping mobile phone application available in a neighborhood, data was collected about places in the neighborhoods public space in which the citizens took pride and places that needed attention. This data is to be used as input for the area plan of the neighborhood. A first case-study with the application showed that even though there was low participation from the neighborhood, due to the high quality of the added data it was still valuable for the municipality.

Waarde van Amsterdam Oost

In deze studie wordt het stadsdeel Oost van Amsterdam onderzocht op de stand van zaken en mogelijkheden van waardecreatie en de wijze waarop dat wordt gefaciliteerd door de fysiek ruimtelijke kenmerken van dat stadsdeel in relatie tot andere delen. Amsterdam Oost is een stadsdeel van de stad Amsterdam dat vanaf 1875 stukje bij beetje is ontstaan en een stadsdeel van Amsterdam is geworden. Het begon in eerste instantie met de Oosterparkbuurt en de Dapperbuurt. Vanaf 1900 zijn de Transvaalbuurt en de Indische Buurt geplant en ontstaan. Watergraafsmeer is er later 1920) bijgekomen. In 2002 is IJburg begonnen met de aanleg en bouw. IJburg wordt ook wel aangeduid als "Nieuw Oost".

Circulair wood for the neighbourhood

Since 2016, the Amsterdam Dapperbuurt in the East of Amsterdam, has its own Zero Waste Lab (ZWL), a collection and recycle centre for separated household waste. Drawing on the specific case of wood as a waste-stream, the project Circulair Wood for the Neighbourhood supports the ZWL (initiative of the foundation De Gezonde Stad) realizing two of their ambitions: (A) to transition from recycling to up-cycling; (B) to transition from awareness raising to social engagement and shared ownership. The project is a partnership between the ZWL, the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (Research Group Psychology for Sustainable Cities & Research Group Digital Production) and Verdraaid Goed (a Rotterdam based company up-cycling devalued materials by research and design). The project Circulair Wood for the Neighbourhood contains three components/sub-projects, 1) research on the wood waste stream and possibilities for production; (2) research on design possibilities, and (3) research on stakeholder involvement. This is the final report of the sub-project stakeholder involvement led by the research group Psychology for Sustainable Cities. This sub-project specifically examined the psychology behind the decision making process of residents to hand in (or not) separated household wood waste to the ZWL in the neighbourhood of the Dapperbuurt and proposes possible interventions.
