Industry 4.0 has placed an emphasis on real-time decision making in the execution of systems, such as semiconductor manufacturing. This article will evaluate a scheduling methodology called Evolutionary Learning Based Simulation Optimization (ELBSO) using data generated by a Manufacturing Execution System (MES) for scheduling a Stochastic Job Shop Scheduling Problem (SJSSP). ELBSO is embedded within Ordinal Optimization (OO), where in the first phase it uses a meta model, which previously was trained by a Discrete Event Simulation model of a SJSSP. The meta model used within ELBSO uses Genetic Programming (GP)-based Machine Learning (ML). Therefore, instead of using the DES model to train and test the meta model, this article uses historical data from a front-end fab to train and test. The results were statistically evaluated for the quality of the fit generated by the meta-model.

In a rapidly developing labor market, in which some parts of jobs disappear and new parts appear due to technological developments, companies are struggling with defining future-proof job qualifications and describing job profiles that fit the organization’s needs. This is even more applicable to smaller companies with new types of work because they often grow rapidly and cannot hire graduates from existing study programs. In this research project, we undertook in-depth, qualitative research into the five roles of a new profession: social media architect. It has become clear which 21st century skills and motivations are important per role and, above all, how they differ in subcategory and are interpreted by a full-service team in their working methods, in a labor market context, and in the talents of the professional themselves. In a workshop, these “skills” were supplemented through a design-based approach and visualized per team role in flexibly applicable recruitment cards. Toeleverende bedrijven in de Brainport regio zijn veelal te typeren als high mix low volume (HMLV) productieomgevingen. Deze bedrijven kenmerken zich door een breed aanbod aan mogelijke producten (grote variëteit in producten), die veelal in lage volumes geproduceerd worden. Vaak zijn dit klantspecifieke producten die eenmalig, of incidenteel geproduceerd worden. Deze bedrijven focussen zich traditioneel op efficiënt gebruik van resources, waarbij bezettingsgraad en kostendekking relevant zijn. De toenemende klantvraag in de regio leidt tot druk op de productiecapaciteit. Een eerste intuïtieve reactie van deze bedrijven is om de bezettingsgraad van machines verder te verhogen. Om de kosten (Cost) beheersbaar te houden, wordt niet direct geïnvesteerd in extra capaciteit. Een ongewenst neveneffect is dat tijdigheid (Delivery, zoals levertijden, leverbetrouwbaarheid, flexibiliteit) en kwaliteit (Quality) verder onder druk komen te staan. De ogenschijnlijke tegenstrijdigheid tussen kosten en tijdigheid in deze HMLV-productieomgevingen, is een vaak terugkomend vraagstuk bij praktijkgerichte onderzoeken die door Fontys Technische Bedrijfskunde studenten uitgevoerd worden. Companies in the Brainport region are often characterized as high mix low volume (HMLV) production environments. These companies are distinguished by a wide range of possible products (high product variety), which are produced in low volumes. These are often customer-specific products that are produced once or incidentally. Traditionally, these companies focus on efficient use of resources, where utilisation rate and cost coverage are relevant. The increasing customer demand in the region leads to pressure on production capacity. An initial intuitive response from these companies is to further increase the utilisation rate of machines. To keep costs manageable, the company tries to avoid investing in additional capacity. An undesirable side effect is increasing pressure on timeliness (delivery, such as lead times, delivery reliability, flexibility) and quality. The apparent contradiction between costs and timeliness in these HMLV production environments is a recurring issue in practice-oriented research conducted by Fontys Industrial Engineering and Management students. This results in the following research question: Which sub-aspects may be relevant to the performance regarding Quality, Delivery, and Cost (QDC) of an HMLV production environment?

Increasingly aware of the importance of active lifestyles, many people intend to exercise more. One of the main challenges is to translate exercise intentions into actual exercise behaviour, the so-called intention-behaviour gap. To investigate barriers and enablers that affect this gap, we conducted a 7-day diary study with 16 women. Participants indicated what their exercise intentions and behaviour were per day, and whether and why they changed retrospectively during the day. Through the diary study, we gain insights into (i) the intention-behaviour interplay, and (ii) the experienced barriers and enablers that influence this interplay throughout the day. Based on the findings, we contribute new implications for design in supporting people translating their intentions into exercise behaviour. We propose three design concepts to illustrate underlying design opportunities. The focus is on positively influencing the interplay of enablers and barriers of exercising and how these can be addressed through design

In this paper we describe our work in progress on the development of a set of criteria to predict text difficulty in Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT). These texts are used in a four year bachelor program, which is being brought in line with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Council of Europe, 2001). Production and interaction proficiency are assessed through the NGT Functional Assessment instrument, adapted from the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (Caccamise & Samar, 2009). With this test we were able to determine that after one year of NGT-study students produce NGT at CEFR-level A2, after two years they sign at level B1, and after four years they are proficient in NGT on CEFR-level B2. As a result of that we were able to identify NGT texts that were matched to the level of students at certain stages in their studies with a CEFR-level. These texts were then analysed for sign familiarity, morpheme-sign rate, use of space and use of non-manual signals. All of these elements appear to be relevant for the determination of a good alignment between the difficulty of NGT signed texts and the targeted CEFR level, although only the morpheme-sign rate appears to be a decisive indicator

This study theorizes on the sociomateriality of food in authority-building processes of partial organizations by exploring alternative food networks (AFNs). Through the construction of arenas for food provisioning, AFNs represent grassroots collectives that deliberately differentiate their practices from mainstream forms of food provisioning. Based on a sequential mixed-methods analysis of 24 AFNs, where an inductive chronological analysis is followed by a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA), we found that the entanglements between participants’ food provisioning practices and food itself shape how authority emerges in AFNs. Food generates biological, physiological and social struggles for AFN participants who, in turn, respond by embracing or avoiding them. As an outcome, most AFNs tend to bureaucratize over time according to four identified patterns while a few idiosyncratically build a more shared basis of authority. We conclude that the sociomateriality of food plays an important yet indirect role in understanding why and how food provisioning arenas re-organize and forge their forms of authority over time.
