The Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) Challenge simulation platform helps planners and stakeholders understand and manage the complexity of MSP. In the interactive simulation, different data layers covering an entire sea region can be viewed to make an assessment of the current status. Users can create scenarios for future uses of the marine space over a period of several decades. Changes in energy infrastructure, shipping, and the marine environment are then simulated, and the effects are visualized using indicators and heat maps. The platform is built with advanced game technology and uses aspects of role-play to create interactive sessions; it can thus be referred to as serious gaming. To calculate and visualize the effects of planning decisions on the marine ecology, we integrated the Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE) food web modeling approach into the platform. We demonstrate how EwE was connected to MSP, considering the range of constraints imposed by running scientific software in interactive serious gaming sessions while still providing cascading ecological feedback in response to planning actions. We explored the connection by adapting two published ecological models for use in MSP sessions. We conclude with lessons learned and identify future developments of the simulation platform.

Densely populated areas are major sources of air, soil and water pollution. Agriculture, manufacturing, consumer households and road traffic all have their share. This is particularly true for the country featured in this paper: the Netherlands. Continuous pollution of the air and soil manifests itself as acification, decalcification and eutrofication. Biodiversity becomes lower and lower in nature areas. Biological farms are also under threat. In case of mobility, local air pollution may have a huge health impact. Effective policy is called for, after high courts blocked construction projects, because of foreseen building- and transport-related NOx emissions. EU law makers are after Dutch governments, because these favoured economics and politics over environmental and liveability concerns. But, people in the Netherlands are strongly divided. The latest provincial elections were dominated by environmental concerns, next to many socio-economic issues. NOx and CO2 emissions by passenger cars are in focus. Technical means and increasing fuel economy norms strongly reduced NOx emissions to a still too high level. A larger number of cars neutralized a technological reduction of CO2 emissions. The question is: What would be the impact of a drastic mandatory reduction in CO2, NOx, and PM10 emissions on car ownership and use in the Netherlands? The authors used literature, scenario analysis and simulation modelling to answer this question. Electric mobility could remove these emissions. Its full impact will only be achieved if the grid-mix, which is still dominated by fossil fuels, becomes green(er), which is a gradual, long-term, process. EVs compete with other consumers of electricity, as many other activities, such as heating, are also electrifying. With the current grid-mix, it is inevitable that the number of km per vehicle per year is reduced to reach the scenario targets (−25% resp. −50% CO2 emissions by cars). This calls for an individual mobility budget per car user.

This article delves into the acceptance of autonomous driving within society and its implications for the automotive insurance sector. The research encompasses two different studies conducted with meticulous analysis. The first study involves over 600 participants involved with the automotive industry who have not yet had the opportunity to experience autonomous driving technology. It primarily centers on the adaptation of insurance products to align with the imminent implementation of this technology. The second study is directed at individuals who have had the opportunity to test an autonomous driving platform first-hand. Specifically, it examines users’ experiences after conducting test drives on public roads using an autonomous research platform jointly developed by MAPFRE, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, and Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The study conducted demonstrates that the user acceptance of autonomous driving technology significantly increases after firsthand experience with a real autonomous car. This finding underscores the importance of bringing autonomous driving technology closer to end-users in order to improve societal perception. Furthermore, the results provide valuable insights for industry stakeholders seeking to navigate the market as autonomous driving technology slowly becomes an integral part of commercial vehicles. The findings reveal that a substantial majority (96% of the surveyed individuals) believe that autonomous vehicles will still require insurance. Additionally, 90% of respondents express the opinion that policies for autonomous vehicles should be as affordable or even cheaper than those for traditional vehicles. This suggests that people may not be fully aware of the significant costs associated with the systems enabling autonomous driving when considering their insurance needs, which puts the spotlight back on the importance of bringing this technology closer to the general public.

A replacement of cars with conventional internal combustion engines (ICEs) by electric vehicles (EVs) is seen by many as a means to improve local air quality, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions. The market for EV is slowly developing with a growing number of (subsidized) manufacturers offering EV models in different market segments to (subsidized) car owners. The number of EVs is still small in most countries, but policymakers and manufacturers see partial or even full replacement of ICEs by EVs as realistic in the coming decade. EV engines are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Li-ion is produced from precursors, either liquid (brine metal salt) or solid (hard rocks). Lithium mining is still concentrated in a few countries. Lithium is used for batteries, ceramics, grease and medicine. This reliance comes at a cost, as conventional lithium mining creates several externalities. The following main question will be addressed: How to source a required volume of lithium in a way that reduces the environmental and social-economic impact of mining this resource? To address this question, we will use a combination of relevant literature and a local case study supported by a model-based estimation. The focus is on the Netherlands, an EV user country, but the approach is generic.

A rail-guided robotic system is currently being designed for the inspection of ballast water tanks in ships. This robotic system will manipulate sensors toward the interior walls of the tank. In this paper, the influence of rail compliance on the end-effector position error due to ship movement is investigated. An analytical model of the six degrees-of-freedom (DOF) rail stiffness is presented and implemented in a reduced-order analytical frequency response model. This model describes the transfer function between ship acceleration and end-effector position as a function of rail geometry and material properties. Moreover, the influence of the robot compliance is investigated, resulting in design parameters for the robot. The models and calculations are evaluated and compared with a multibody model and prove to be accurate. The analytic models indicate whether or not a proposed robotic system is feasible and if so, optimize rail dimensions, material and robot design. A use-case scenario has been developed which shows that the proposed design will be unlikely to meet the requirements of this robot system design; therefore an alternative design strategy is recommended.

In this paper we present a system that generates questions from an ontology to determine a crisis situation by ordinary people using their mobile phone: the Situation Awareness Question Generator. To generate questions from an ontology we propose a formalization based on Situation Theory and several strategies to determine a situation as quickly as possible. A suitable ontology should comply with human categorization to enhance trustworthiness. We created three ontologies, i.e. a pragmatic-based ontology, an expert-based ontology and a basiclevel ontology. Several experiments, published elsewhere, showed that the basic-level ontology is most suitable.

In deze lectorale rede wordt eerst geschetst hoe de maritieme industrie zich op een kruispunt van wegen bevindt. Met op de ene weg de enorme opgave van het ontwerpen, bouwen en exploiteren van een revolutionair nieuwe generatie van schone en veilige schepen. En op de andere de beschikbaarheid van steeds betere ontwerpgereedschappen, die gedreven wordt door krachtige ontwikkelingen op het gebied van (numerieke) wiskunde, IT, mathematisch modelleren, visualisatie en simulaties. Vervolgens wordt aangegeven op welke wijze het lectoraat meent hierbij van dienst te kunnen zijn, en welke concrete onderwijs- en onderzoeksinspanningen daartoe voorgenomen zijn.
