However, it seems to be, as John Maynard Keynes argues. that “It is better to be roughly right than precisely wrong.” Psychology can hardly be blamed for being hyper-specialized, with a sloppy 370 peer-reviewed articles a day (!) on SDT, a 'common sense' theory. Two conclusions: (1) if intrinsic motivation were self-evident in our (hyperspecialized) society, not so much would be published about SDT and (2) peer review in psychology does not automatically lead to generally accepted scientific insights. For example, Newton's laws of physics don't need to be "proven" in publications hundreds of times a day.

Playfulness intertwined with city-related themes, such as participatory planning and civic media are becoming more popular. In the last ten years, game designers have taken up the theme of play in relation to the urban environment. In this paper, we present a conceptual mapping of “urban play,” through the analysis of eight examples of urban games. Better conceptual tools are necessary to discuss and reflect on how games draw on, or deal with, urban issues. While urban games are diverse in medium, intent, and experience, across the spectrum analyzed in this paper, they hold the potential for various player experiences emerging through play that may be useful to designers. These are: a sense of agency and impact; feelings of relatedness and empathy; an awareness and understanding of complexity, perspective-taking and scenario-building, and either planning or taking action. The conceptual mapping offers scholars and practitioners a more nuanced vocabulary for designing games and playful interventions that might be used to tackle societal issues that either require or could benefit from genuine public involvement as engaged citizens.

De afgelopen twee decennia is er veel meer aandacht ontstaan bij onderzoekers en beleidsmakers voor het begrip co-creatie. Bijna altijd wordt de rol van co-creatie als positief en essentieel gezien in een proces waarin maatschappelijke of publieke uitdagingen worden onderzocht en opgelost (zogenaamde sociale innovatie). Het meeste onderzoek naar deze twee begrippen is kwalitatief van aard en gebaseerd op ‘case studies’.In zijn promotieonderzoek kijkt Peter Broekema naar de rol van co-creatie binnen sociale innovatie in Europese samenwerkingsprojecten. In zijn eerste artikel heeft hij de begrippen co-creatie en sociale innovatie tussen 1995 en 2018 binnen de EU geanalyseerd en geconcludeerd dat beide begrippen steeds breder gebruikt worden en samen met het begrip impact zijn getransformeerd tot een beleidsparadigma.In het tweede artikel keek Peter Broekema hoe beide begrippen doorwerken in specifieke subsidieoproepen en hoe consortia deze begrippen toepassen en samenwerken. Co-creatie vindt vaak binnen eigen type stakehodlers plaatsAbstractSocial innovation and co-creation are both relatively new concepts, that have been studied by scholars for roughly twenty years and are still heavily contested. The former emerged as a response to the more technologically focused concept of innovation and the latter originally solely described the collaboration of end-users in the development of new products, processes or services. Between 2010-2015, both concepts have been adapted and started to be used more widely by for example EU policymakers in their effort to tackle so called ‘grand societal challenges’. Within this narrative – which could be called co-creation for social innovation, it is almost a prerequisite that partners – especially citizens - from different backgrounds and sectors actively work together towards specific societal challenges. Relevance and aimHowever, the exact contribution of co-creation to social innovation projects is still unclear. Most research on co-creation has been focussing on the involvement of end-users in the development of products, processes and services. In general, scholars conclude that the involvement of end-users is effective and leads to a higher level of customer satisfaction. Only recently, research into the involvement of citizens in social innovation projects has started to emerge. However, the majority of research on co-creation for social innovation has been focusing on collaborations between two types of partners in the quadruple helix (citizens, governments, enterprises and universities). Because of this, it is still unclear what co-creation in social innovation projects with more different type of partners entails exactly. More importantly however, is that most research has been based on national case studies in which partners from different sectors collaborate in a familiar ‘national’ setting. Normally institutional and/or cultural contexts influence co-creation (for example the ‘poldermodel’in the Netherlands or the more confrontational model in France), so by looking at projects in a central EU and different local contexts it becomes clear how context effects co-creation for social innovation.Therefore this project will analyse a number of international co-creation projects that aim for social innovation with different types of stakeholders in a European and multi-stakeholder setting.With this research we will find out what people in different contexts believe is co-creation and social innovation, how this process works in different contexts and how co-creation contributes to social innovation.Research question and - sub questionsThe project will answer the following question: “What is the added value of co-creation in European funded collaboration projects that aim for social innovation?” To answer the main question, the research has been subdivided into four sub questions:1) What is the assumed added value of co-creation for social innovation?2) How is the added value of co-creation for social innovation being expressed ex ante and ex post in EU projects that aim specifically for social innovation by co-creation?3) How do partners and stakeholders envision the co-creation process beforehand and continuously shape this process in EU projects to maximise social innovation?4) How do partners and stakeholders regard the added value of co-creation for social innovation in EU projects that that aim for social innovation?Key conceptsThe research will focus on the interplay between the two main concepts a) co-creation and b) social innovation. For now, we are using the following working definitions:a) co-creation is a non-linear process that involves multiple actors and stakeholders in the ideation, implementation and assessment of products, services, policies and systems with the aim of improving their efficiency and effectiveness, and the satisfaction of those who take part in the process.b) social innovation is the invention, development and implementation of new ideas with the purpose to (immediately) relieve and (eventually) solve social problems, which are in the long run directed at the social inclusion of individuals, groups or communities.It is clear that both definitions are quite opaque, but also distinguish roughly the same phases (ideation/invention, development, implementation and assessment) and also distinguish different levels (products/services, policies and systems). Both concepts will be studied within the policy framework of the EU, in which a specific value to both concepts has been attributed, mostly because policymakers regard co-creation with universities and end-users almost as a prerequisite for social innovation. Based on preliminary research, EU policies seem to define social innovation in close reation with ‘societal impact’, which could defined as: “the long lasting effect of an activity on society, because it is aimed at solving social problems”, and therefore in this specific context social innovation seems to encompasses societal impact. For now, I will use this working definition of social innovation and will closely look at the entanglement with impact in the first outlined paper.MethodologyIn general, I will use a qualitative mixed method approach and grounded theory to answer the main research question (mRQ). In order to better understand the added value of co-creation for social innovation in an EU policy setting, the research will:SubRQ1) start with an analysis of academic literature on co-creation and social impact. This analysis will be followed by and confronted with an analysis of EU policy documents. SubRQ2) use a qualitative data analysis at nineteen EU funded projects to understand how co-creation is envisoned within social innovation projects by using the quintuple helix approach (knowledge flows between partners and stakeholders in an EU setting) and the proposed social innovation journey model. By contrasting the findings from the QDA phase of the project with other research on social innovation we will be able to find arachetypes of social innovation in relation with the (perceived) added value of co-creation within social innovation. SubRQ3) These archetypes will be used to understand the process of co-creation for social innovation by looking closely at behavioural interactions within two social innovation projects. This close examination will be carried out by carrying out interviews with key stakeholders and partners and participant observation.SubRQ4) The archetypes will also be used to understand the perceived added value by looking closely at behavioural interactions within two social innovation projects. This close examination will be carried out by carrying out interviews with key stakeholders and partners and participant observation.ImpactThe project will contribute to a better understanding of the relationship between co-creation and social innovation on different levels:a) Theoretical: the research will analyse the concepts of co-creation and social innovation in relation to each other by looking at the origins of the concepts, the adaptation in different fields and the uptake within EU policies;b) Methodological: a model will be developed to study and understand the non-lineair process of co-creation within social innovation, by focusing on social innovation pathways and social innovation strategies within a quintuple helix setting (i) academia, ii) enterprises and iii) governments that work together to improve iv) society in an v) EU setting);c) Empirical: the project will (for the first time) collect data on behavioural interactions and the satisfaction levels of these interactions between stakeholders and partners in an EU project.d) Societal: the results of the research could be used to optimize the support for social innovation projects and also for the development of specific funding calls.
Entangled Machines is a project by Mariana Fernández Mora that interrogates the colonial and extractive legacies underpinning artificial intelligence (AI). By introducing slowness and digital kinship as critical frameworks, the project reconceptualises AI as embedded within intricate social and ecological networks, thereby contesting dominant narratives of efficiency and optimisation. Through participatory, practice-based methodologies such as the Material Playground, the project integrates feminist and non-Western epistemologies to articulate alternative models for ethical, sustainable, and equitable AI practices. Over a four-year period, Entangled Machines develops theory, engages diverse communities, and produces artistic outputs to reimagine human-AI interactions. In collaboration with partners including ARIAS Amsterdam, Archival Consciousness, and the Sandberg Institute, the research seeks to foster decolonial and interdisciplinary approaches to AI. Its culmination will be an “Anarchive” – a curated assemblage of artistic, theoretical, and archival outputs – that serves as a resource for rethinking AI’s socio-political and ecological impacts.
Regular physical activity is considered to be an important component of a healthy lifestyle that decreases the risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, colon and breast cancer, obesity and other debilitating conditions. Physical activity can also improve functional capacity and therefore also the quality of life in older adults. Despite all these favorable aspects, a substantial part of the Dutch older adult population is still underactive or even sedentary. To change this for the better, the Groningen Active Living Model (GALM) was developed.Aim of GALM is to stimulate recreational sports activities in sedentary and underactive older adults in the 55-65 age band. After a door-to-door visit as part of an intensive recruitment phase, a fitness test was conducted followed by the GALM recreational sports program. This program was based on principles from evolutionary-biological play theory and insights fromsocial cognitive theory. The program was versatile in nature (e.g. softball, dance, self-defense, swimming, athletics, etc.) in two main ways: a) to improve compliance with the program different sports were offered, which was reported to be more appealing for older adults; b) by aiming at more components of motor fitness (e.g. strength, flexibility, speed, endurance and coordination). Between 1997 and 2005 more than 552,000 persons were visited door-to-door, over 55,700 were tested, and 41,310 participated in the GALM recreational sports program. The aim of the present thesis is to determine the effects of participation in the GALM recreational sports program on physical activity, health and fitness outcomes.Chapter 2 describes the effectiveness of the GALM recruitment in selecting and recruiting sedentary and underactive older adults. Three municipalities in the Netherlands were selected, and in every municipality four neighborhoods were included. Two of each of the four neighborhoods were randomly assigned as intervention and the others as control neighborhoods. In total, 8,504 persons were mailed and received a home visit. During this home visit the GALM recruitment questionnaire was collected on which the selection between sedentary/underactive and physically active older adults was based. Ultimately we succeeded inincluding 12.3% (315 of the 2,551 qualifying) of the older adults, 79.4% of whom could be indeed considered sedentary or underactive. The cost of successfully recruiting an older adult was estimated at $84.To assess the effects of a physical activity intervention on health and fitness and explain the results, it is necessary to know program characteristics regarding frequency, intensity, time and content of the activities. With respect to the GALM recreational sports activity program, the only unknown characteristic was intensity. Chapter 3 describes the intensity of this program systematically. Using heart rate monitors, data of 97 persons (mean age 60.1 yr) were collected in three municipalities. The mean intensity of all 15 GALM sessions was 73.7% of the predicted maximal heart rate. Six percent of the monitored heart rate time could be classified as light, 33% as moderate and 61% as hard. In summary, the GALM recreational sports program meets the 1998 ACSM recommendations for intensity necessary to improve cardiorespiratory fitness.Chapters 4 and 5 describe the effects of 6 and 12 months of participation in the GALM recreational sports program, and 181 persons were followed over time. Results after 6 months revealed only few significant between-group differences favoring the intervention group (i.e. sleep, diastolic blood pressure, perceived fitness score and grip strength). Changes in energyexpenditure for leisure-time physical activities (EELTPA) showed an increase in both study groups. From 6 to 12 months a decrease in EELTPA occurred in the intervention group and an increase in the control group. The significant positive time effects for the health outcomes (diastolic blood pressure, BMI, percentage of body fat) that were found after 6 months were diminishedfrom 6 to 12 months. However, the energy expenditure for recreational sports activities (EERECSPORT) demonstrated a continuous increase over 12 months. Parallel to this, significant main effects for time were found in performance-based fitness outcomes (i.e. simple reaction time, leg strength, flexibility of hamstrings and lower back, and aerobic endurance). After 12 months only a significant between-group difference for flexibility of the hamstrings andlower back was found, favoring the control group. In conclusion, a short-term increase in EELTPA was found with accompanying improvements in health outcomes that more or less disappeared in 6 to 12 months. In the long term, results showed a continuous increase in EERECSPORT and performance-based fitness. This latter increase is probably a reflection of the significantimprovement over time in EERECSPORT and the fact that recreational sports activities are of a higher intensity.Aerobic endurance is regarded as the most important component of motor fitness that is relevant for older adults to function independently. In Chapter 6, the development in aerobic endurance after 18 months of participation in the GALM recreational sports program was assessed by means of changes in heart rate during fixed submaximal exercise. Since both groups were comparable regarding changes in energy expenditure for physical activity after 6 months and testing confirmed this, both groups were combined and considered as one group. Multilevel analyses were conducted and models for change were developed. A significant decrease in heart rate over time was found at all walking speeds (4, 5, 6 and 7 km/h). The average decrease in heart rate was 5.5, 6.0, 10.0 and 9.0 beats/min for the 4, 5, 6 and 7 km/h walking speeds, respectively. The relative decrease varied from 5.1 to 7.4% relative to average heart rates at baseline. These results illustrate that participation in the GALM recreational sports program has a positive significant effect on aerobic endurance, and that the participants are able to perform at submaximal intensity more easily.Based on the overall results it can be concluded that this study contributes to the field in how to effectively recruit sedentary and underactive older adults and stimulate them to become and stay active in recreational sports activities. As far as we know, this recruitment in combination with the recreational sport program is not only unique but also effective toward increasing performance-based fitness in the long term. Short-term effects were found in other leisure-time activities and health outcomes. To further stimulate other leisure-time and probably health outcomes besides the favorable effects that were already seen, additional interventions that pay more attention to behavioral change in terms of how to integrate other activities besides sports activities are recommended.
