We often judge things as being more valuable if we have to invest a considerable amount of effort instead of acquiring things effortlessly. Sometimes we can only see the value of things when we lose them. Many studies show that fast scrolling does have a disruptive effect on our understanding. On the other hand, a disruption of our understanding itself is sometimes extremely instructive. For example, the study by Singer and Alexander showed that for very slow readers the learning from the screen was better than learning from paper. An reversed U-shape of optimal learning appears: too little effort results in superficial processing, too much trouble gives poor or no processing at all. An optimum is in the middle, at the top.

Background to the problem Dutch society demonstrates a development which is apparent in many societies in the 21st century; it is becoming ethnically heterogeneous. This means that children who are secondlanguage speakers of Dutch are learning English, a core curriculum subject, through the medium of the Dutch language. Research questions What are the consequences of this for the individual learner and the class situation?Is a bi-lingual background a help or a hindrance when acquiring further language competences. Does the home situation facilitate or impede the learner? Additionally, how should the TEFL professional respond to this situation in terms of methodology, use of the Dutch language, subject matter and assessment? Method of approach A group of ethnic minority students at Fontys University of Professional Education was interviewed. The interviews were subjected to qualitative analysis. To ensure triangulation lecturers involved in teaching English at F.U.P.E. were asked to fill in a questionnaire on their teaching approach to Dutch second language English learners. Thier response was quantitatively and qualitatively analysed. Findings and conclusions The students encountered surprisingly few problems. Their bi-lingualism and home situation were not a constraint in their English language development. TEFL professionals should bear the heterogeneous classroom in mind when developing courses and lesson material. The introduction to English at primary school level and the assessment of DL2 learners require further research.
PURPOSE: The COVID-19 pandemic caused rapid implementation and upscaling of video consulting. This study examined the perceived quality of care delivered through video consulting at a geriatric outpatient clinic, and how this related to adoption issues and barriers early adopting professionals found themselves confronted with.METHODS: We performed a qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with healthcare professionals complemented by the views of geriatric patients, family caregivers and medical secretaries. Participants from five academic centers and six teaching hospitals were included. Three researchers conducted the interviews, coded the data, and used thematic analysis.RESULTS: Interviews were conducted with 13 healthcare professionals, 8 patients, 7 family caregivers, and 4 medical secretaries. From these early adopters, we infer five criteria positively contributing to perceived quality of care provided by video consulting: (1) the patient has an intact cognitive function; (2) a family caregiver with digital literacy can be present; (3) doctor and patient already have an established relationship; (4) no immediate need for physical examination or intervention; and (5) the prior availability of a comprehensive and concise medical history. Overall, the uptake of video consulting in geriatric outpatient care appeared to be slow and laborious due to several implementation barriers.CONCLUSION: The implementation of video consulting use among geriatricians and geriatric patients at the geriatric outpatient clinic was slow due to the absence of many facilitating factors, but video consulting might be offered as an alternative to face-to-face follow-up to suitable patients in geriatric outpatient clinics.
The textiles and apparel industry faces increasing regulatory pressure to reduce its negative environmental and social impact. A widely discussed strategy is to extend the active lifecycle of garments through durable, better quality clothing. Durability, however, is an ambiguous concept and a more complex understanding of durability is emerging that goes beyond material strength to notions of emotional, social and functional durability that live in consumers’ mindsets. Our understanding of durability and how it impacts product design, reuse, repair and recycling is limited and businesses find it difficult to incorporate durability into more sustainable and circular business models, particularly where there is also an element of degrowth or slow growth. Additionally, digital technologies, particularly for traceability and product information, are needed and require new organizational capabilities and change. Our project proposes to explore the concept of durability in the apparel and textiles industry, focusing on how various industry actors (e.g. fashion brands, designers, suppliers, consumers) define durability and how they incorporate it into commercially viable circular business models. Our proposal is timely in that local, national and EU research agendas are stimulating sustainable and circular transformation. Nationally, we address questions in the Nationale Wetenschaps Agenda (NWA-ORC), e.g. the call on the theme Ab-initio circular materials design that emphasizes an interdisciplinarity approach for circular redesign and includes aspects of socio-economic relevance, raw material innovations and digital tooling. On the EU level, policies, directives and regulations, so called New Industrial Strategies, are aimed at helping industry towards green and digital transformation. Our proposal is pertinent to the EU Strategy for Sustainable and Circular Textiles and the Transition Pathway for the Textiles Ecosystem. Calls in the near future offer opportunities for the consortium to access funding for continued research and industry collaboration.
