Het Limburgse stadje Thorn kent sinds de negentiende eeuw een grote traditie op het gebied van de symfonische blaasmuziek. Er zijn twee toporkesten in dit genre. Het boek gaat in op de ontstaansgeschiedenis van de blaasmuziek in Thorn. In 1840 werd in Thorn het eerste harmonieorkest opgericht. In 1863 ontstonden na onderlinge strubbelingen uit dit Philharmonisch Gezelschap twee nieuwe orkesten. Een aantal mythen worden in dit opzicht ontzenuwd. Naast het historisch perspectief richt het boek zich vanuit een sociologisch en muziekwetenschappelijk perspectief op de ontwikkeling van een van de beide Thornse toporkesten: Harmonie-Orkest St. Michaël. Er wordt onder andere gekeken naar de ontwikkeling van het repertoire, de orkestsamenstelling en de organisatie van het orkest in de loop der jaren.

Information systems and especially Business Process Management (BPM) systems are essential to achieve this. Despite success and opportunities for organizations that innovate with BPM applications there are also many failures of implementations caused by both technical and non-technical problems. In many instances it appears that user participation and user involvement are critical to the success of implementation. To overcome the many problems this thesis reports on research that focused on the improvement of the user participation practice. Therefore the main research question in this PhD thesis is: How can user participation in BPM implementation be successful?

In psychiatric care professionals perceive some patients as 'difficult', especially patients with long-term non-psychotic disorders. For these patients few evidence-based treatments exist. An intervention program, Interpersonal Community Psychiatric Treatment (ICPT), was developed by the authors. It was evaluated with the aim to increase effective behaviours by both patients and community psychiatric nurses (CPNs).
