Within European cities, entrepreneurs engage in private and public collaborative initiatives that work towards reducing local solid waste streams (Futurium, 2019). Furniture and interior design products account for nearly 50% of these waste streams, making them a key priority on the EU agenda to prevent climate change (Vanacore et al, 2021). New legislation to extend producer responsibility and reduce waste incineration is developing on a national level (PBL, 2021) and collaborative initiatives for urban upcycling are emerging (Ministerie I&W, 2023; Futurium, 2019). Business models to support upcycling are evolving, but their configuration and effectiveness is little understood.

Construction and Demolition Waste (CDW) is the main driver of resource consumption and waste generation in Europe. Although most European countries achieved 70% recovery rate of CDW, the majority is used for backfilling. Therefore, opportunities for Circular Economy (CE) practices in CDW management are underexploited. This research identifies the innovative practices, barriers, and enablers for developing tailored-made designs of Urban Resource Centre (URC) for managing CDWs in four European cities namely Riga, Tartu, Kavala, and Barcelona. Qualitative methods using multiple case studies were used to draw generalizations from cases. Data was collected from reports and interviews with different stakeholders, and a validation workshop for designing URC of each city. Current innovative practices include recycling and upcycling of CDWs; use of green points, exchange platforms, and waste management apps; repair cafés; selective demolition; and (pilot) initiatives on resource centers that function as material exchange point, recycling center, workstation for repair and creative ideas, and prototyping hub, among others. The identified barriers and enablers can be categorized as governmental, market, and individual factors. First, local governments (municipalities) play a key role for facilitating CDW management via both support such as provision of subsidies, green procurement, and mandatory waste sorting, and through strict regulatory requirements. Second, URCs must be locally rooted with inclusion of citizens, grass roots initiatives, and schools/universities to increase community acceptance, awareness, and education on CDW management. Third, partnerships with local stakeholders, such as repair cafes, waste management companies, and local NGOs, is needed to operate the URCs both in short- and long-terms. And fourth, the creation of niche markets such as linking localism (e.g. locally crafted CE stores) and supplying to businesses in need of CDWs, can support the operation of URCs. The identified barriers and enablers can help further improve the design of URCs for each city.

Sustainable consumption is interlinked with sustainable production. This chapter will introduce the closed-loop production, the circular economy, the steady state economy, and Cradle to Cradle (C2C) models of production. It will reflect on the key blockages to a meaningful sustainable production and how these could be overcome, particularly in the context of business education. The case study of the course for bachelor’s students within International Business Management Studies (IBMS) program at three Universities of Applied Science (vocational schools), and at Leiden University College in The Netherlands will be discussed. Student teams from these schools were given the assignment to make a business plan for a selected sponsor company in order to advise them how to make a transition from a linear to circular economy model. These case studies will illustrate the opportunities as well as potential pitfalls of the closed loop production models. The results of case studies’ analysis show that there was a mismatch between expectations of the sponsor companies and those of students on the one hand and a mismatch between theory and practice on the other hand. The former mismatch is explained by the fact that the sponsor companies have experienced a number of practical constraints when confronted with the need for the radical overhaul of established practices within the entire supply chain and students have rarely considered the financial viability of the "ideal scenarios" of linear-circular transitions. Closed loop or ‘circular’ production systems known as Circular Economy and Cradle to Cradle represent a unique opportunity to radically revise the currently wasteful system of production. One of the challenges of such systems is that circular products need to be both produced locally with minimum environmental footprint and simultaneously satisfy demand of global consumers. This article presents a literature review that describes the application of circular methodologies to education for sustainability, which has been slow to adopt circular systems to the curriculum. This article discusses how Bachelor and Master-level students apply their understanding of these frameworks to corporate case studies. Two assignment-related case studies are summarized, both of which analyze products that claim to be 'circular'. The students' research shows that the first case, which describes the impact of a hybrid material soda bottle, does not meet circularity criteria. The second case study, which describes products and applications of a mushroom-based material, is more sustainable. However, the students' research shows that the manufacturers have omitted transport from the environmental impact assessment and therefore the mushroom materials may not be as sustainable as the manufacturers claim. As these particular examples showed students how green advertising can be misleading, applying “ideal” circularity principles as part of experiential learning could strengthen the curriculum. From a circular standpoint it is interesting to reuse as much as possible construction and demolition waste (CDW) into new building projects. In most cases CDW will not be directly reusable and will need to be processed and stored first. In order to turn this into a successful business case CDW will need to be reused on a large scale. In this paper we present the concept of a centralized and coordinated location in the City of Utrecht where construction and demolition waste is collected, sorted, worked, stored for reuse, or shipped elsewhere for further processing in renewed materials. This has expected advantages for the amount of material reuse, financial advantages for firms and clients, generating employability in the logistics and processing of materials, optimizing the transport and distribution of materials through the city, and thus the reduction of emissions and congestion. In the paper we explore the local facility of a Circular Hub, and the potential effects on circular reuse, and other effects within the City of Utrecht.

While consumers have become increasingly aware of the need for sustainability in fashion, many do not translate their intention to purchase sustainable fashion into actual behavior. Insights can be gained from those who have successfully transitioned from intention to behavior (i.e., experienced sustainable fashion consumers). Despite a substantial body of literature exploring predictors of sustainable fashion purchasing, a comprehensive view on how predictors of sustainable fashion purchasing vary between consumers with and without sustainable fashion experience is lacking. This paper reports a systematic literature review, analyzing 100 empirical articles on predictors of sustainable fashion purchasing among consumer samples with and without purchasing experience, identified from the Web of Science and Scopus databases.

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) is the most important waste stream in the EU in terms of mass, with around 340 million tonnes between 2010 and 2018 (EEA, 2020). Most member states achieved a recovery target of 70% for this fraction, however, it is mainly based on backfilling or downcycling. Materials coming from demolition and renovation work are not often available for reuse or recycling activities, with some noticeable exceptions in the case of some pioneering Urban Resource Centres (URCs). URCs are physical centres that promote the circular economy at local level (Partnership on Circular Economy, 2019) prioritizing reuse, preparation for reuse, upcycling and remanufacturing activities over material recycling. This is an emerging concept throughout Europe, that has received much policy attention given its potential to help achieve Circular Economy goals set by the European Commission. So far there have been no systematic analyses of URCs, their operation and their impact. The goal of our paper is twofold: 1) to understand how frontrunning URCs currently operate and 2) to derive conclusions/policy recommendations/design principles for URCs. This article presents a comparison of seven URCs that to some extent allow the reuse of CDW in their locations. The data has been gathered in guided study visits to the different locations, complemented by additional information provided by the managers of the URCs through their yearly reports and follow up conversations. The research took place as part of the project Centers for Urban Resources, Reuse and Remanufacture (Cure+), which aims to establish URC pilots in the four project cities (Riga, Tartu, Kavala and Barcelona).

De nationale en internationale ambities op het vlak van Circulaire Economie zijn groot, en veel bedrijven en organisaties dragen bewust of onbewust reeds bij aan de Circulaire Economie. Een Circulaire Economie reguleert het fundamenteel anders omgaan met grondstoffen, door het hergebruik van producten en grondstoffen centraal te stellen en afval en schadelijke emissies naar bodem, water en lucht zoveel mogelijk te voorkomen. De belofte van de Circulaire Economie is om verschillende vormen van duurzaamheid op verschillende niveaus te organiseren als een liefst integrale economische opgave. Hierbij zijn het voorkómen van afval en het (her)waarderen van materie belangrijke uitgangspunten. Naast technische ontwikkelingen zijn hier ook sociale en zelfs systeeminnovaties bij nodig. Daar hoort bijvoorbeeld ook bewustwording, gedragsbeïnvloeding en zakelijke haalbaarheid bij. De transformatie naar een circulaire samenleving is een grootschalige maatschappelijke transitie. Hogeschool Inholland beweegt mee met deze ontwikkeling in de maatschappij, door middel van onderzoek en onderwijs in samenwerking met het werkveld. Deze position paper is een verkenning van bestaande theorieën, maatschappelijk debat, relevante beleidskaders en financieringsinstrumenten (het externe beeld), alsmede een eerste inventarisatie gericht op het aanbod binnen Inholland (het interne beeld), om daarmee een dialoog te initiëren over een betere positionering van Inholland op het vlak van Circulaire Economie. Als vervolgstappen worden o.a. een verdere inventarisatie van het aanbod en betere inbedding binnen verschillende opleidingen en een versterking en bundeling van onderzoekscapaciteit door middel van een domeinoverstijgende aanpak aanbevolen, alsmede een marktonderzoek om vraag en aanbod beter op elkaar te kunnen laten aansluiten. Mede op basis van deze bouwstenen kan de communicatie en positionering van Inholland op het vlak van Circulaire Economie, zowel intern als extern, verstevigd worden. Deze position paper is een groeidocument, dus de deur blijft open staan om in de toekomst nieuwe kennis, inzichten, aanbevelingen en interventies mee te nemen.

Het voorliggende rapport doet verslag van het onderzoek naar verdienmodellen van preventie. De centrale vraag die met het onderzoek beantwoord is, luidt: Wat zijn mogelijke barrières bij potentiële verdienmodellen voor preventie, die samenwerking tussen actoren in de weg kunnen staan? De algemene uitkomst is dat er zeker verdienmodellen van preventie te identificeren en te ontwerpen zijn temeer daar preventie vanuit een economisch perspectief als een soort investeringsbeslissing kan worden beschouwd. Er zijn echter wel verschillende barrières te onderkennen voor de ontwikkeling van een effectieve verdienmodellen. In het licht van de onderzoeksvraag leidt dit tot volgende conclusies: - Preventie is belangrijk maar komt nog onvoldoende van de grond; - Actoren kunnen worden ingedeeld in vier helixen en hebben verschillende salience; - Preventie is een maatschappelijk verdienmodel; - Verdienmodellen van preventie zijn technologisch, datagedreven en schaalbaar; - Barrieres voor preventie zijn bedrijfskundig van aard.
