Expos, festivals and events have become increasingly important as tools of urban developmentin recent decades. The competitive drive to put cities on the global map has led many to adoptevent-based strategies, including the creation of ‘eventful cities’, ‘festival cities’ and ‘eventportfolios’. World Expos have taken on a particular significance as ‘pulsar events’ that canshape the host city through urban development, increased tourism and place branding. Eachhost city also uses the event in a different way, and gives it a unique flavour that tempers theeventual effects. This paper reviews the literature on World Expos and their effects, identifyingthemes including Place branding, Tourism flows, Resident attitudes and Architecture and urbandevelopment. It then analyses the experience of Barcelona, twofold Expo host and a‘paradigmatic’ example of a city developed through mega events.

Purpose:The International Commission on Illumination (CIE) recommends researchers to investigate a widevariety of behavioural and health outcomes. However, researchers often investigate only a part of occupationalhealth (OH) in relation to light. A literature study (2002–2017) regarding the relationship between office lightingconditions and OH was performed to identify gaps and methodological issues.Method:The OH outcomes investigated in this paper were grouped according to the International Classificationof Diseases and analysed per category: physical and physiological health, mental health, eye health, sleep param-eters and visual comfort.Results:Findings from the literature study (20 eligible papers) showed that all OH aspects were mostly but notexclusively measured subjectively. Furthermore, most studies investigated only a fraction of office lighting par-ameters and OH aspects.Conclusions:It seems that Correlated Colour Temperature (CCT) and illuminance mainly correlate with OH.However, this may also be explained by gaps and methodological issues in studies described in eligible papers.Based on the literature study, an overview was composed elucidating gaps and methodological issues of officelighting and OH studies. It can be used to design and target the purpose of light and health research.

Objectives: Promoting unstructured outside play is a promising vehicle to increase children’s physical activity (PA). This study investigates if factors of the social environment moderate the relationship between the perceived physical environment and outside play. Study design: 1875 parents from the KOALA Birth Cohort Study reported on their child’s outside play around age five years, and 1516 parents around age seven years. Linear mixed model analyses were performed to evaluate (moderating) relationships among factors of the social environment (parenting influences and social capital), the perceived physical environment, and outside play at age five and seven. Season was entered as a random factor in these analyses. Results: Accessibility of PA facilities, positive parental attitude towards PA and social capital were associated with more outside play, while parental concern and restriction of screen time were related with less outside play. We found two significant interactions; both involving parent perceived responsibility towards child PA participation. Conclusion: Although we found a limited number of interactions, this study demonstrated that the impact of the perceived physical environment may differ across levels of parent responsibility.

This review presents an overview of a scientific literature search on the proven effects of daylight exposure on human health. Studies were identified with a search strategy across two main databases. Additionally, a search was performed based on specific health effects. The results are diverse and either physiological or psychological. A rather limited statistically significant and well-documented scientific proof for the association between daylight and its potential health consequences was found. However, the search based on specific health terms made it possible to create a first subdivision of associations with daylight, leading to the first practical implementations for building design.

On April 12th 2019, researchers, students and consortia gathered at the World Horti Centre for an update on the overall status of the HiPerGreen project. The day consisted of presentations from a variety of the HiPerGreen students, staff and guest speakers. There were a variety of exciting updates from the technological and biological realms of the project, as well as an insightful presentation from Deliflor’s Geert Van Geest on Deliflor and their interests in imaging of chrysanthemums. Several new pieces of technology have arisen from the HiPerGreen project. The first being a rail-based imaging system capable of traversing the greenhouse using the heating pipes commonly found in Dutch greenhouses. The drone landing dock has also taken great steps forward and finally, HiPerGreen has partnered with drone manufacture Avular, a company working on the world’s first ‘ultra-wide band’ localized indoor drone. From a biological standpoint significant progress has been made regarding long-term plant monitoring with a focus on reducing fusarium occurrence in the crop. Students are working in climate chambers to model the symptoms of fusarium infection in orchids. Students are also working at Deliflor using the railsystem to measure uniformity in chrysanthemum test crops. Research with the multispectral camera continued and the team hopes to integrate the imaging into mass plant monitoring. The sympoium was concluded with a drink.

Arsenic contamination of groundwater is a major public health concern worldwide. The problem has been reported mainly in southern Asia and, especially, in Bangladesh. Slow-sand filters (SSF) augmented with iron were proven to be a simple, low-cost and decentralized technique for the treatment of arsenic-contaminated sources. In this research, three pilot-scale SSF (flowrate 6 L·h−1) were tested regarding their capability of removing arsenic from groundwater in conditions similar to those found in countries like Bangladesh (70 µg As(III) L−1, 26 °C). From the three, two filters were prepared with mixed media, i.e., sand mixed with corrosive iron matter (CIM filter) and iron-coated sand (ICS filter), and a third conventional SSF was used as a reference. The results obtained showed that the CIM filter could remove arsenic below the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline concentration of 10 µg·L−1, even for inlet concentrations above 150 µg·L−1. After 230 days of continuous operation the arsenic concentration in the effluent started increasing, indicating depletion or saturation of the CIM layer. The effluent arsenic concentration, however, never exceeded the Bangladeshi standard of 50 µg·L−1 throughout the whole duration of the experiments.

Deze afscheidsrede van Frank de Jong verwondert zich over de sterke impact van (directe) instructie in het onderwijs en de daarmee samenhangende gerichtheid op het individuele leren. Om een antwoord te vinden op die verwondering put de rede uit de filosofe Hannah Arendt en haar analyse van de menselijke conditie, de vita activa. Arendt onderscheidt drie menselijke activiteiten: arbeid, werken, spreken en handelen. Arbeid gaat over het voorzien in basisbehoeften en het creëren van een ‘thuis’ met anderen waar het goed toeven is. Werken heeft te maken met het creëren van talen en cultuur en daarmee een kunstmatige wereld. Spreken en handelen omvatten het organiseren van de samenleving en politiek bedrijven. Door het leren en onderwijs te koppelen aan de vita activa komt een beeld naar voren van een onderwijs dat zich voornamelijk richt op arbeid en werken, met een sterke nadruk op (directe) instructie en het aanleren van vaardigheden en kennis. Het spreken en handelen, het ontwikkelen van ideeën en het samenwerken aan een betere wereld, blijven vaak onderbelicht in het onderwijs. Directe instructie mag dan wel efficiënt zijn in het steeds meer geïndustrialiseerde onderwijs met eindtermen en managerial KPI’s, het is niet effectief in het licht van het de totale ontwikkeling als mens. Dit pleit voor meer ruimte te creëren voor idee-ontwikkeling, co-creatie, kennisopbouw en dialoog in het onderwijs. Een onderwijstransitie van een 'belief mode' van leren naar een 'design mode' van leren met de nodige infrastructurele verandering op verschillende niveaus die zo’n transitie vereist. Er is een groeiend bewustwording nodig dat de huidige rol en wijze van leren in het onderwijs en in (school)organisaties onvoldoende bijdraagt aan de oplossingen van de huidige complexe uitdagingen in onze samenleving. Een bredere en diepere benadering van leren in het onderwijs, waarbij niet alleen kennisoverdracht en vaardigheden worden benadrukt, maar ook het ontwikkelen van ideeën, samenwerking en dialoog centraal staan is noodzakelijk, zodat er ruimte is om spreken en handelen te ontwikkelen opdat mensen af en toe uit de rij te stappen om een beter ‘thuis’ te realiseren. Dit doe je niet in je eentje maar in cocreatie met anderen samen en dat moet je (stimu)leren.
