In this research, which is part of my PhD research into the influence of the use of social media in higher education, I have lessened the amount of variables, from Tinto’s integration theory. By including only the best-proven predictive variables, based on previous studies, I avoid the capitalization of chance and have built a more easy to use model for teachers and management. The latent variable ‘satisfaction’ is constructed by using just a fraction of the original manifest variables. The simplified model is tested using principal component analysis (PCA), to prove its fit. Furthermore, to better suit students’ contemporary society in the developed world, the model is enriched with the use of social media, in this case Facebook. The purpose of Facebook use (information, education, social and leisure) and the use of different pages amongst students were also measured with PCA. This provided a better insight in the integration/engagement components, which are also included in the new model. According by the measurements of Cronbach’s alpha and Guttman’s lambda-2, the new components showed internal consistency and reliability. In addition, SPSS AMOS was used for testing the fit of the model and showed reasonable values for the normed fit index (NFI), the comparative fit index (CFI), the Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA). This study will compare different background variables within the model to uncover the possible influences upon students’ attrition (and therefor also their success), engagement/satisfaction and social media use. Ultimately this paper will provide jet another piece to the puzzle for a better insight into the factors of students’ attrition and/or success.

Nursing Leadership is an important competence to develop for providing quality of care and preventing attrition of nurses. This study looked into the perceptions and experiences of nurses on practising leadership related to performing bachelor nursing competencies. Next to that awareness of the development of nursing leadership was addressed.

From the article: "Various programs in higher education feel a need to teach project management skills to students. Measuring the effect of education is a challenge especially when focused on behavioral skills. Research on learning gains usually turns to the method of Students Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG), which can be questioned on reliability. This article constructs five design criteria for an improved Students Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG): measure satisfaction, use pre- and posttests, use perceived ability, account for learning stage one and account for attrition. A first test on a semester of a professional master in project management yields ambiguous results. The second test with a 360 degrees measurement is performed on the same semester with different students. The post test is scheduled for June 2014, results will be reported at the World Congress."

Nursing Leadership is an important competence to develop in order to provide quality of care and prevent attrition of nurses. This research program looked into the perceptions and experiences of nurses on practising leadership. Next to that supporting the development of nursing leadership was addressed. The program has a mixed-method, action research design in which 75 in-depth interviews and 24 focus group interviews and quantitative data of 435 nurses form the backbone. According to hospital nurses, nursing leadership is related to proactiveness and voicing expertise in order to deliver good nursing care. Nevertheless, they do not feel fully competent and knowledge deficits were detected on aspects of the bachelor nursing profile, such as evidence based practice. Working-culture factors can either inhibit or encourage nursing leadership. The further awareness of unconsciously using expertise and knowledge deficits as well as team development towards a continuous safe learning environment are necessary steps for the enhancement of nursing leadership. A Nursing Leadership model was developed in which generic personal leadership competencies combined with expertise of the nurses' level of education and degrees form the essence of shared leadership in teams focussed on the realisation of good nursing care.

Background: In 2009, the Steering Committee for Pregnancy and Childbirth in the Netherlands recommended the implementation of continuous care during labor in order to improve perinatal outcomes. However, in current care, routine maternity caregivers are unable to provide this type of care, resulting in an implementation rate of less than 30%. Maternity care assistants (MCAs), who already play a nursing role in low risk births in the second stage of labor and in homecare during the postnatal period, might be able to fill this gap. In this study, we aim to explore the (cost) effectiveness of adding MCAs to routine first- and second-line maternity care, with the idea that these MCAs would offer continuous care to women during labor. Methods: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) will be performed comparing continuous care (CC) with care-as-usual (CAU). All women intending to have a vaginal birth, who have an understanding of the Dutch language and are > 18 years of age, will be eligible for inclusion. The intervention consists of the provision of continuous care by a trained MCA from the moment the supervising maternity caregiver establishes that labor has started. The primary outcome will be use of epidural analgesia (EA). Our secondary outcomes will be referrals from primary care to secondary care, caesarean delivery, instrumental delivery, adverse outcomes associated with epidural (fever, augmentation of labor, prolonged labor, postpartum hemorrhage, duration of postpartum stay in hospital for mother and/or newborn), women’s satisfaction with the birth experience, cost-effectiveness, and a budget impact analysis. Cost effectiveness will be calculated by QALY per prevented EA based on the utility index from the EQ-5D and the usage of healthcare services. A standardized sensitivity analysis will be carried out to quantify the outcome in addition to a budget impact analysis. In order to show a reduction from 25 to 17% in the primary outcome (alpha 0.05 and bèta 0.20), taking into account an extra 10% sample size for multi-level analysis and an attrition rate of 10%, 2 × 496 women will be needed (n = 992). Discussion: We expect that adding MCAs to the routine maternity care team will result in a decrease in the use of epidural analgesia and subsequent costs without a reduction in patient satisfaction. It will therefore be a costeffective intervention. Trial registration: Trial Registration: Netherlands Trial Register, NL8065. Registered 3 October 2019 - Retrospectively registered.

Second career teachers (SCT) are key role models in vocational education (VE) because they prepare students for the vocational practice they were part of, and they bring up-to-date vocational knowledge and skills into VE schools. Therefore, the early leaving of SCTs in VE is a problem, adding to the worldwide teacher shortages. Induction programs have been developed to support starting teachers to grow into their new profession and to diminish high attrition rates. However, it is argued that current induction programs fail to support SCTs adequately. For instance, induction programs rarely adapt to SCTs’ various needs, such as recognizing and integrating previously developed competencies and specific backgrounds. Further-more, SCTs’ induction programs in the specific context of VE are largely under-studied. This study explores the experiences of SCTs in VE during their induction programs regarding four themes identified in research on SCTs in other education sectors: 1) professional identity development, 2) learning processes, 3) tailor-made coaching, and 4) co-creation of induction programs. Eleven SCTs from eight Dutch VE schools were interviewed. The data show a rich variation of SCTs’ experiences. For example, they experienced the opportunity to develop their professional identity as teachers while preserving and including their former identity as practitioners of the vocation they teach for. Yet, only a few SCTs experienced co-creation of the induction program, which seems to have a positive impact. The insights of this study offer an understanding of what SCTs in VE go through and what might support them during their induction.

Since 2016, it is mandatory for all future students at the department of Media, Information and Communication, to participate in a study choice test (SCT), prior their enrollment. However, the outcome is not binding and students are still entitled to enter the first year after receiving negative advice. With the help of a structural model, built for my PhD research, the predictive value of the SCT is tested by comparing the time it takes the students to finish all first year exams, their average grade point and attrition, against the results of the SCT. By using the structural model, various background variables are also measured, such as engagement, effort and commitment are also measured. By using the normed fit index (NFI), the comparative fit index (CFI), the Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) and the root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA), the fit of the model is established. In addition, a comparison of the direct and indirect influence of the SCT will provide more knowledge about the correlations between the different variables, the SCT and ultimately student success.
