BACKGROUND: Rapid technological development has been opening new possibilities for children with disabilities. In particular, robots can enable and create new opportunities in therapy, rehabilitation, education, or leisure. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to share experiences, challenges and learned lessons by the authors, all of them with experience conducting research in the field of robotics for children with disabilities, and to propose future directions for research and development. METHODS: The article is the result of several consensus meetings to establish future research priorities in this field. CONCLUSIONS: This article outlines a research agenda for the future of robotics in childcare and supports the establishment of R4C – Robots for Children, a network of experts aimed at sharing ideas, promoting innovative research, and developing good practices on the use of robots for children with disabilities. RESULTS: Robots have a huge potential to support children with disabilities: they can play the role of a play buddy, of a mediator when interacting with other children or adults, they can promote social interaction, and transfer children from the role of a spectator of the surrounding world to the role of an active participant. To fulfill their potential, robots have to be “smart”, stable and reliable, easy to use and program, and give the just-right amount of support adapted to the needs of the child. Interdisciplinary collaboration combined with user centered design is necessary to make robotic applications successful. Furthermore, real-life contexts to test and implement robotic interventions are essential to refine them according to real needs.
Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are an overlooked risk factor for behavioural, mental and physical health disparities in children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and borderline intellectual functioning (BIF). Aims: To gain insight into the presence of the 10 original Wave II ACEs and family context risk variables in a convenience sample of children with ID and BIF in Dutch residential care. Methods and procedures: 134 case-files of children with ID (n = 82) and BIF (n = 52) were analysed quantitatively. Outcomes and results: 81.7 % of the children with ID experienced at least 1 ACE, as did 92.3 % of the children with BIF. The average number of ACEs in children with ID was 2.02 (range 0???? 8) and in children with BIF 2.88 (range 0???? 7). About 20 % of the children with moderate and mild ID experienced 4 ACEs or more. Many of their families faced multiple and complex problems (ID: 69.5 %; BIF 86.5 %). Multiple regression analysis indicated an association between family context risk variables and the number of ACEs in children. Conclusions and implications: The prevalence of ACEs in children with ID and BIF appears to be considerably high. ACEs awareness in clinical practice is vital to help mitigate negative outcomes.
BackgroundThe Uganda version of Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI-UG) was culturally adapted and validated from the PEDI-US, a tool used to evaluate the functional capability of children with or without disability aged 6 months to 7.5 years in the areas of self-care, mobility and social domains. A group of Ugandan occupational therapists with experience of using PEDI-UG participated in this study to explore the question: What do Ugandan occupational therapists say about the utility and value of the PEDI-UG for children with disabilities?MethodsA qualitative research design was chosen to explore the participants' viewpoints concerning the utility and value of the PEDI-UG for children with disabilities. Purposive sampling was used to recruit health professionals for the focus group discussions. Focus group discussions were carried out with 18 occupational therapists and nurses. Thematic analysis was performed to establish patterns and themes.ResultsSeveral challenges concerning the contextual use of PEDI-UG were reported. For example, PEDI-UG being culturally adapted in two languages (English and Luganda) makes it difficult for health professionals to use it for children whose caregivers are non-English or non-Luganda speakers. In addition, participants reported adapting the way they asked the assessment questions, struggling with how they interpreted the scores and observing the child's skills if required during PEDI-UG interviews with caregivers.ConclusionsThe findings of this study suggest that health professionals are challenged with the use of the PEDI-UG assessment in diverse cultural contexts and/or languages. These challenges are important considerations for the PEDI-UG translation in different Uganda cultural languages and training health professionals on the use and value of PEDI-UG for children with disabilities.
Psychosocial problems related to social isolation are a growing issue for wellbeing and health and have become a significant societal problem. This is especially relevant for children and adults with chronic illnesses and disabilities, and those spending extended periods in hospitals or permanently living in assisted living facilities. A lack of social relationships, social connectivity, and the inability to travel freely leads to feelings of isolation and loneliness. Loneliness interventions often use mediated environments to improve the feeling of connectedness. It has been proven that the utilization of haptic technologies enhances realism and the sense of presence in both virtual environments and telepresence in physical places by allowing the user to experience interaction through the sense of touch. However, the technology application is mostly limited to the experiences of serious games in professional environments and for-entertainment-gaming. This project aims to explore how haptic technologies can support the storytelling of semi-scripted experiences in VR to improve participants’ sense of presence and, therefore, the feeling of connectedness. By designing and prototyping the experience, the project aims to obtain insights and offer a better understanding of designing haptic-technology-supported storytelling and its potential to improve connectedness and become a useful tool in isolation interventions. The project will be conducted through the process of participants’ co-creation.
