One of the claims the OER movement makes is that availability of (open) digital learning materials improves the quality of education. The promise is the ability to offer educational programs that take into account specific demands of the learner. The question is how to reach a situation where a customized demand can be met using OER with acceptable quality against acceptable costs. This situation resembles mass customization as is common in industry for several decades now. Techniques from an industry where an end product is assembled with the demands of the customer as a starting point can be translated to the field of education where courses and learning paths through a curriculum are assembled using a mixture of open and closed learning materials and learning services offered by an institution. Advanced IT support for both the modeling of the learning materials and services and a configurator to be used by a learner are necessary conditions for this approach.

The central aim of this dissertation is to increase our understanding of changes in identifications and in the professional identity of employees, by investigating the prominent foci of identification, their mix in higher-order social identities and the personal and organisational factors (HRM and supervisory behaviour) that are involved in the change of these professional self definitions. Building upon the assumption that institutions for Higher Education and their workforce are being continually challenged to keep up and adapt to changing societal demands and that it is the quality and flexibility of the workforce which is the key factor to address this turmoil, this dissertation specifically focuses on the understanding of changes in teachers’ professional identity in higher vocational education. For this purpose four related empirical studies have been conducted. Together these studies illustrate the considerable professional diversity in the workforce and shed light on the relationships between foci of identification and professional identities, performance appraisal, leadership, career competencies, customization strategies, professional development and changes in teachers’ identifications over time.

Mass-customization challenges the one-size-fits-all assumption of mass production, allowing customers to specify the options that best fit their requirements when choosing a product or a service. In business process management, to achieve mass-customization, providers offer to their customers the opportunity to customize the way in which a process will be enacted. We focus on monitoring as a specific customization aspect. We propose a multidimensional classification of modeling patterns for customized monitoring infrastructures. Patterns enable the provider to offer a set of customizable options to customers and design a monitoring infrastructure that fits the preferences specified by customers on such options. An example in the online advertising industry demonstrates how our framework can improve the services currently offered by providers.

Secondary school physical education (PE) teachers are continuously challenged to find ways to support students learning and motivate them for an active and healthy lifestyle. To address this complexity, continuing teacher professional development (TPD) is key. Technological tools can facilitate the effective delivery of TPD in this context. Successful implementation of this technology, however, is not self-evident. Based on the general aim of effectively integrating technologies in the educational process and focusing on the needs of educators, this study examines how the evidence-based theoretical TARGET framework for creating a motivating PE learning climate might be embedded into a digital professional development tool for PE teachers, useful in everyday practice. It presents a case study in which a multidisciplinary team of researchers, designers, and end-users iteratively went through several phases of need identification, idea generation, designing, development, and testing. By using a participatory approach, we were able to collect contextualized data and gain insights into users’ preferences, requirements, and ideas for designing and engaging with the tool. Based on these insights the TPD TARGET-tool for PE teachers was ultimately developed. The most prominent characteristics of this tool are (1) the combination of an evaluative function with teaching strategy support, (2) the strong emphasis on ease of use due to the complex PE teaching context, (3) the avoidance of social comparison, and suggestions of normative judgment, and (4) the allowance for a high level of customization and teacher autonomy.

In this paper we describe a novel mechanism that successfully endows NPCs in real-time games with strategic planning capabilities. Our approach creates adaptive behaviours that take into account long-term and short term consequences. Our approach is unique in that: (i) it is sufficiently fast to be used for hundreds of agents in real time; (ii) it is flexible in that it requires no previous knowledge of the playing field; and (iii) it allows customization of the agents in order to generate differentiated behaviours that derive from virtual personalities.

Critical incident response (CIR) has evolved to require a high level of cultural competence, customization, and adaptability to meet the needs of client organizations while incorporating clinical best practices and current research. The Critical Incident Outcome Measure (CIOM) is a timely and pioneering evidence-based evaluative tool developed by Morneau Shepell over the course of a four-year period. The CIOM tool, based on the Workplace Outcomes Suite (WOS) tool originally developed in 2010, was developed in 2016 [Herlihy et.al., 2018]; beta tests and modifications, along with the publication of a validation paper, were completed in 2017; further feedback was incorporated and an implementation plan developed in 2018; and full program implementation began in 2019.
