In het SCOUT (Sensoric data Catching Of highly Useful Terabytes) project wordt onderzocht hoe de verzamelde data verkregen door sensortechnologie in de tomatenteelt het beste verwerkt kunnen worden om een bruikbaar eindproduct op te leveren. Intergenerational continuity in family behaviors partly results from socialization processes in the parental home. However, socialization is a multidimensional process. This article tests hypotheses about the relative importance of value transmission and modeling in explaining expectations of adolescence concerning the timing of leaving home, and entry into cohabitation, marriage, and parenthood. Structural equation modeling on multiactor data from over 1,000 parent–adolescent child couples in the Netherlands is used to test hypotheses. Results suggest that, in general, both value transmission and modeling are important predictors of adolescents’ expectations concerning the timing of major family events. Moreover, no differences between mothers and fathers and between boys and girls are observed in the strength of the intergenerational relationships studied.

Terms like ‘big data’, ‘data science’, and ‘data visualisation’ have become buzzwords in recent years and are increasingly intertwined with journalism. Data visualisation may further blur the lines between science communication and graphic design. Our study is situated in these overlaps to compare the design of data visualisations in science news stories across four online news media platforms in South Africa and the United States. Our study contributes to an understanding of how well-considered data visualisations are tools for effective storytelling, and offers practical recommendations for using data visualisation in science communication efforts.

Abstract Background: COVID-19 was first identified in December 2019 in the city of Wuhan, China. The virus quickly spread and was declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020. After infection, symptoms such as fever, a (dry) cough, nasal congestion, and fatigue can develop. In some cases, the virus causes severe complications such as pneumonia and dyspnea and could result in death. The virus also spread rapidly in the Netherlands, a small and densely populated country with an aging population. Health care in the Netherlands is of a high standard, but there were nevertheless problems with hospital capacity, such as the number of available beds and staff. There were also regions and municipalities that were hit harder than others. In the Netherlands, there are important data sources available for daily COVID-19 numbers and information about municipalities. Objective: We aimed to predict the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 infections per 10,000 inhabitants per municipality in the Netherlands, using a data set with the properties of 355 municipalities in the Netherlands and advanced modeling techniques. Methods: We collected relevant static data per municipality from data sources that were available in the Dutch public domain and merged these data with the dynamic daily number of infections from January 1, 2020, to May 9, 2021, resulting in a data set with 355 municipalities in the Netherlands and variables grouped into 20 topics. The modeling techniques random forest and multiple fractional polynomials were used to construct a prediction model for predicting the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 infections per 10,000 inhabitants per municipality in the Netherlands. Results: The final prediction model had an R2 of 0.63. Important properties for predicting the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 infections per 10,000 inhabitants in a municipality in the Netherlands were exposure to particulate matter with diameters <10 μm (PM10) in the air, the percentage of Labour party voters, and the number of children in a household. Conclusions: Data about municipality properties in relation to the cumulative number of confirmed infections in a municipality in the Netherlands can give insight into the most important properties of a municipality for predicting the cumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 infections per 10,000 inhabitants in a municipality. This insight can provide policy makers with tools to cope with COVID-19 and may also be of value in the event of a future pandemic, so that municipalities are better prepared.

With this contribution, the results of the measurement campaign performed with a synchronously distributed antenna array testbed operating at the center frequency of 3.686 GHz are presented. For the first time, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, the electric field distribution induced by coherent downlink transmission was experimentally assessed in the proximity of the target receiver using a calibrated electromagnetic field probe. This allowed to quantify the actual observed electric field gain and the shape of the electric field enhancement region around the target received. It was found that 16 transmitting antenna elements enhance the root-mean-square electric field level by about a factor of two, in a 2.5λ neighborhood of the target receiver. In addition, a possible disruption of the propagation environment due to the probe movement was assessed through the real-time channel state information feedback.

Onderwijs is in beweging. Opleidingen veranderen en daarmee ook de rol van leraren en docenten. Een groep enthousiaste docenten van de Faculteit Educatie van de Hogeschool Utrecht heeft, onder begeleiding van Hans Jansen, lector Vernieuwende Opleidingsmethodiek en -didactiek, een Opleiding voor Opleiders ontwikkeld. Om inzicht te verkrijgen is dit creatieve proces van ontwikkelen, met behulp van etnografisch onderzoek, gevolgd. In dit artikel beschrijven wij ons onderzoek. Eerst schetsen we kort de uitgangspunten van Levend Leren en de betekenis van een leerlandschap als alternatief voor een curriculum. Vervolgens geven we een toelichting op de methoden van dataverzameling en data-analyse binnen dit onderzoek en worden een aantal observaties besproken. Bij de ontwikkeling van een nieuw leerlandschap voor een nieuwe opleiding kan er sprake zijn van een creatief proces waarbij oude gedachten zoveel mogelijk losgelaten moeten worden, de geest leeggemaakt. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat er momenten zijn waarop dat bij de deelnemers lijkt te gebeuren. Tijdens deze momenten blijkt één en één meer te worden dan twee en vindt er creatie plaats in een dialoog.

This paper reports about preparatory work for future standardization that is carried out through an EU coordination and support action titled IM-SAFE. It focuses on applied digital technologies for monitoring and safety, including predictive maintenance of bridges and tunnels. Amidst the improved affordability of digitalization technologies and techniques, the biggest challenge in monitoring and maintenance of bridges and tunnels is no longer about collecting data as much as possible, but about obtaining and exploiting meaningful data throughout the lifecycle of the built assets. An effective and efficient data-driven approach is important to al-low both human experts and computers to make accurate diagnostics, predictions, and decisions. Further standardization is seen as an important part to reach that goal. The work in IM-SAFE related to ICT standardization focuses on the following topics: (1) the general requirements and preconditions for high quality and cost-effective acquisition, transmission, storage and processing of monitoring datasets to ensure the data is fully accessible and machine-interpretable; (2) the relations between the future standards in structural engineering with the open ICT standards for interoperability, especially on Internet of Things (IoT), Building Information Model (BIM), Geographical Information System (GIS), and Semantic Linked Data (LD); (3) a common design of IT platforms to manage monitoring and asset management data of transport infrastructures; (4) the ways to facilitate data analytics technologies, including AI, to be applied for monitoring and asset management of transport infrastructures, and to assess the added value of data-driven approach next to physics-based modelling. With regard to these topics, this paper reports the outcomes from the expert and stakeholder consultations that recently took place within the IM-SAFE pan-European Community of Practice.
