Knowledge of child development influences parental expectations of, and interactions with, children. Studies have shown that maternal knowledge supports cognitive and social–emotional development of young children and can have long-lasting benefits. Level of developmental knowledge of parents and grandparents has seldom been investigated on a population level. Our aim was to compare Canadian and Dutch samples of urban parents and grandparents in terms of normative knowledge of children’s cognitive and social–emotional development. Urban parents (n = 379) and grandparents (n = 174) from the province of Alberta, Canada (N = 553) and parents (n = 634) and grandparents (n = 96) of the city of The Hague in the Netherlands (N = 730) answered questions related to knowledge of cognitive and social–emotional development of young children, including topics such as “do children have stronger bonds with parents who stay at home instead of working outside the home?” and “do children learn more from hearing someone in the same room talk than hearing someone on TV?” Overall, the Canadian respondents were more likely to answer these questions correctly. In both samples, women were more likely than men to answer correctly. No significant relationship between age or role (parent or grandparent) and knowledge was identified, but there was a positive correlation between knowledge and level of education. Little is known about international differences in caregivers’ knowledge about normative child development. This study suggests that differences exist. Understanding differences between countries in parental knowledge may provide insight into cross-cultural variability in child behavioral and developmental outcomes. https://doi.org/10.1177/2158244018777027
Objectives Patients who underwent corrective surgery for tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) have increased long-term risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Yet, limited information is available on how to evaluate the risk in this population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of aerobic exercise capacity, along with other related parameters, at medium-term follow-up in adult patients with tetralogy of Fallot. Methods and results Between 2000 and 2003, 92 adults (age 26.2 ± 7.8 years; 63 male) with corrected TOF or TOF-type morphology underwent a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) until exhaustion and echocardiography. During a mean follow-up of 7.3 ± 1.2 years (range 0.9 to 9.3 years), 2 patients died and 26 patients required at least 1 cardiac-related intervention at a mean age of 28.9 ± 7.9 years. Event-free survival tended to be higher in patients with the classical type of TOF (P = 0.061). At multivariate Cox analysis, age at CPET [hazard ratio (HR): 1.13, P = 0.006], age at correction (HR: 0.82, P = 0.037), right ventricular (RV) function (HR: 4.94, P = 0.001), QRS duration (HR: 1.02, P = 0.007), percentage of predicted peak oxygen uptake (peak VO2%) (HR: 0.96, P = 0.029) and ventilatory effi ciency slope (VE/VCO2 slope) (HR: 1.13, P = 0.021) were signifi cantly related to the incidence of death/cardiac-related intervention during medium follow-up. Conclusions Early corrective surgery and a well-preserved RV are associated with a better outcome in adults with corrected TOF. Furthermore, CPET provides important prognostic information; peak VO2% and VE/VCO2 slope are independent predictors for event-free survival in patients with corrected TOF.
Diet related non-communicable diseases (NCDs), as well as micronutrient deficiencies, are of widespread and growing importance to public health. Authorities are developing programs to improve nutrient intakes via foods. To estimate the potential health andeconomic impact of these programs there is a wide variety of models. The aim of this review is to evaluate existing models to estimate the health and/or economic impact of nutrition interventions with a focus on reducing salt and sugar intake andincreasing vitamin D, iron, and folate/folic acid intake. The protocol of this systematic review has been registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO: CRD42016050873). The final search was conducted onPubMed and Scopus electronic databases and search strings were developed for salt/sodium, sugar, vitamin D, iron, and folic acid intake. Predefined criteria related to scientific quality, applicability, and funding/interest were used to evaluate the publications. In total 122 publications were included for a critical appraisal: 45 for salt/sodium, 61 for sugar, 4 for vitamin D, 9 for folic acid, and 3 for iron. The complexity of modelling the health and economic impact of nutrition interventions is dependent on the purpose and data availability. Although most of the models have the potential to provide projections of future impact, the methodological challenges are considerable. There is a substantial need for more guidance and standardization for future modelling, to compare results ofdifferent studies and draw conclusions about the health and economic impact of nutrition interventions.
