Immersive journalism (IJ) is often assumed to be inherently emotion-inducing. Through using inclusive technology, interaction possibilities and immersive narratives, the audience should ideally experience what feels like to be in a certain situation. However, for the most part we do not know to which extent and in what form IJ influences the experience of emotions. We wanted to investigate, whether, and if so, which characteristics of IJ are related to the experience of emotions, and which role the personality trait empathy tendency plays in this respect. This is important, as the evaluation of IJ often relies on the emotion-inducing assumption thereof. Four different experiments comparing one immersive journalistic characteristic (level of inclusion, interaction possibilities, immersive narratives) to the respective non-immersive counterpart were conducted. Results indicate that while the level of inclusion and interaction possibility increase the intensity of the experience, the immersive narrative influences the valence dimension of emotions. Additionally, empathy tendency is found to be a relevant moderator for these effects. Conclusions are threefold. First, the narrative form of IJ is key; second, the analysis of IJ needs to go beyond the level of inclusion; third, including emotions when assessing IJ is fundamental to understand its impact.

Walking meetings are a promising way to reduce unhealthy sedentary behavior at the office. Some aspects of walking meetings are however hard to assess using traditional research approaches that do not account well for the embodied experience of walking meetings. We conducted a series of 16 bodystorming sessions, featuring unusual walking meeting situations to engage participants (N=45) in a reflective experience. After each bodystorming, participants completed three tasks: a body map, an empathy map, and a rating of workload using the NASA-TLX scale. These embodied explorations provide insights on key themes related to walking meetings: material and tools, physical and mental demand, connection with the environment, social dynamics, and privacy. We discuss the role of technology and opportunities for technology-mediated walking meetings. We draw implications for the design of walking meeting technologies or services to account for embodied experiences, and the individual, social, and environmental factors at play.

This study will examine whether voluntary work or an internship in a developing country contributes to the development of global citizenship among young people. For the purpose of this study, global citizenship will be defined as a combination of social awareness and possessing international competencies. For a period of four years, a group of 1000 participants between 14 and 25 years old was followed using online self-administered surveys, surveys conducted within the social environment and a smaller number of in-depth interviews. Data collection took place prior to an internship or voluntary work in a developing country, following their return, and six months after their return. Almost all of the international competencies that according to prior research are required to be able to function effectively when communicating with people from a different cultural background were found to have increased during their their stay abroad. Only reading and writing skills in the local language of the area were shown not to have improved. The greatest amount of improvement occurred in the area of intercultural competencies, namely attitude, knowledge, behaviour and skills. Following their stay abroad, the personal and social competencies of participants were also shown to have increased. Relatively speaking, their international professional and academic skills improved the least. Despite this, following the return from voluntary work or an internship in a developing country, a larger number of participants were shown to be exhibiting a socially responsible attitude with an understanding of interdependence, equality of all people and a shared responsibility for solving global issues, and expressed this more frequently in their behaviour. In addition, an increase in flexibility, cultural empathy, social initiative and emotional stability among participants was observed. What essentially characterises the participants according to the in-depth interviews is the ability they have developed to look through someone else’s eyes at their own culture and living conditions in the Netherlands and to use their improved self-confidence to live a more socially aware life and/or engage in international activities after their return from abroad.

Finally, an implementation package based on the process evaluation will be developed, allowing the scaling up of the intervention to other care institutions. Discussion: Results of the trial will be available for dissemination by Spring 2023. The digital Photo-Activity is expected to promote meaningful connections between the resident with dementia, and their (in)formal carers through the facilitation of person-centered conversations. Many students graduating in higher education will achieve a managerial or professional position, with leadership qualities being highly important. The need to reflect on leadership as an important developmental goal in higher education is highlighted by pointing out that many curricula, especially in the managerial, organisational and economic domain, include specific courses on leadership. It seems that some of our thinking on leadership needs revision. According to Kellerman, leaders’ ability to connect to followers is paramount to gain and remain in power. Dutch management scholar Manfred Kets de Vries (2004) underlines that the main responsibility of a leader is to envision and inspire. In this chapter we will examine the role of personality and personal values in the ability of informal leaders to inspire other team members. In the first section we will elaborate on transformational leadership and shared leadership. In the next, we will link these forms of leadership to personality and personal values. In the third section the findings of our empirical study will be discussed. We conclude with the implications of our study for leadership practice and the scholarly field of leadership. From an educational point of view our findings are important. The results shed additional light on the importance of personality traits on leadership, and informal leadership in particular. As leadership is an important phenomenon in society and working life, (under)graduates can be assisted in understanding and developing it. But in the context of this book it should be highlighted that transformational leadership is highly relevant in knowledge innovation (García-Morales et al., 2012), which is a core issue in higher education. Consequently, inspiring others is relevant, because group work is commonly used in higher education. Understanding group dynamics within student teams, informal leadership specifically, can help lecturers to explain and discuss effective and ineffective group work. In our opinion, the results of this study offer interesting evidence-based insights to reflect on and develop those personal characteristics that can be important for informal leadership effectiveness.

Brains and gender, separately and in their interrelatedness, are hot items today in popular journals and academic literature. It is in particular the complexity of the interdependence of physical-, psychological-, and contextual-related developments of feminization in education that we focus on these contributions. We argue that a combination of recent findings of brain research and Marcia's psychological model of identity development in a “provocative pedagogy”—combining youngsters’ (boys and girls) need for exploration, console, and support—is a promising “stepped care” strategy for religious development of youngsters in a multicultural and multireligious context.

In de afgelopen jaren hebben technologische ontwikkelingen de aard van dienstverlening ingrijpend veranderd (Huang & Rust, 2018). Technologie wordt steeds vaker ingezet om menselijke servicemedewerkers te vervangen of te ondersteunen (Larivière et al., 2017; Wirtz et al., 2018). Dit stelt dienstverleners in staat om meer klanten te bedienen met minder werknemers, waardoor de operationele efficiëntie toeneemt (Beatson et al., 2007). Deze operationele efficiëntie leidt weer tot lagere kosten en een groter concurrentievermogen. Ook voor klanten kan de inzet van technologie voordelen hebben, zoals betere toegankelijkheid en consistentie, tijd- en kostenbesparing en (de perceptie van) meer controle over het serviceproces (Curran & Meuter, 2005). Mede vanwege deze beoogde voordelen is de inzet van technologie in service-interacties de afgelopen twee decennia exponentieel gegroeid. De inzet van zogenaamde conversational agents is een van de belangrijkste manieren waarop dienstverleners technologie kunnen inzetten om menselijke servicemedewerkers te ondersteunen of vervangen (Gartner, 2021). Conversational agents zijn geautomatiseerde gesprekspartners die menselijk communicatief gedrag nabootsen (Laranjo et al., 2018; Schuetzler et al., 2018). Er bestaan grofweg drie soorten conversational agents: chatbots, avatars, en robots. Chatbots zijn applicaties die geen virtuele of fysieke belichaming hebben en voornamelijk communiceren via gesproken of geschreven verbale communicatie (Araujo, 2018;Dale, 2016). Avatars hebben een virtuele belichaming, waardoor ze ook non-verbale signalen kunnen gebruiken om te communiceren, zoals glimlachen en knikken (Cassell, 2000). Robots, ten slotte, hebben een fysieke belichaming, waardoor ze ook fysiek contact kunnen hebben met gebruikers (Fink, 2012). Conversational agents onderscheiden zich door hun vermogen om menselijk gedrag te vertonen in service-interacties, maar op de vraag ‘hoe menselijk is wenselijk?’ bestaat nog geen eenduidig antwoord. Conversational agents als sociale actoren Om succesvol te zijn als dienstverlener, is kwalitatief hoogwaardige interactie tussen servicemedewerkers en klanten van cruciaal belang (Palmatier et al., 2006). Dit komt omdat klanten hun percepties van een servicemedewerker (bijv. vriendelijkheid, bekwaamheid) ontlenen aan diens uiterlijk en verbale en non verbale gedrag (Nickson et al., 2005; Specht et al., 2007; Sundaram & Webster, 2000). Deze klantpercepties beïnvloeden belangrijke aspecten van de relatie tussen klanten en dienstverleners, zoals vertrouwen en betrokkenheid, die op hun beurt intentie tot gebruik, mond-tot-mondreclame, loyaliteit en samenwerking beïnvloeden (Hennig-Thurau, 2004; Palmatier et al., 2006).Er is groeiend bewijs dat de uiterlijke kenmerken en communicatieve gedragingen (hierna: menselijke communicatieve gedragingen) die percepties van klanten positief beïnvloeden, ook effectief zijn wanneer ze worden toegepast door conversational agents (B.R. Duffy, 2003; Holtgraves et al., 2007). Het zogenaamde ‘Computers Als Sociale Actoren’ (CASA paradigma vertrekt vanuit de aanname dat mensen de neiging hebben om onbewust sociale regels en gedragingen toe te passen in interacties met computers, ondanks het feit dat ze weten dat deze computers levenloos zijn (Nass et al., 1994). Dit kan verder worden verklaard door het fenomeen antropomorfisme (Epley et al., 2007; Novak & Hoffman, 2019). Antropomorfisme houdt in dat de aanwezigheid van mensachtige kenmerken of gedragingen in niet-menselijke agenten, onbewust cognitieve schema's voor menselijke interactie activeert (Aggarwal & McGill, 2007; M.K. Lee et al., 2010). Door computers te antropomorfiseren komen mensen tegemoet aan hun eigen behoefte aan sociale verbinding en begrip van de sociale omgeving (Epley et al., 2007; Waytz et al., 2010). Dit heeft echter ook tot gevolg dat mensen cognitieve schema’s voor sociale perceptie toepassen op conversational agents.

This book consists of thirteen chapters with elaborations on several perspectives of the Universities kaleidoscope. The aim of our book is not meant as a purely scientific endeavour, but as a contribution to the future development of universities. The style is popular science, primarily targeted at our lecturers as one of the most important social capitals we have. As the book is addressed to them, all chapters discuss their role, directly or indirectly. The focus is always on the ability to offer students the best possible learning environment. This requires first and foremost a dialogue on the professional diversity of lecturers. Innovative behaviour appears to be crucial for all of them. In addition to these abilities of lecturers, the design of the curriculum is essential for all parties involved. A curriculum largely determines the themes and contents addressed, how work-related, engaging and stimulating learning activities are developed and how lecturers design these on the micro level based on their expertise. Depression is a highly prevalent and seriously impairing disorder. Evidence suggests that music therapy can decrease depression, though the music therapy that is offered is often not clearly described in studies. The purpose of this study was to develop an improvisational music therapy intervention based on insights from theory, evidence and clinical practice for young adults with depressive symptoms. The Intervention Mapping method was used and resulted in (1) a model to explain how emotion dysregulation may affect depressive symptoms using the Component Process Model (CPM) as a theoretical framework; (2) a model to clarify as to how improvisational music therapy may change depressive symptoms using synchronisation and emotional resonance; (3) a prototype Emotion-regulating Improvisational Music Therapy for Preventing Depressive symptoms (EIMT-PD); (4) a ten-session improvisational music therapy manual aimed at improving emotion regulation and reducing depressive symptoms; (5) a program implementation plan; and (6) a summary of a multiple baseline study protocol to evaluate the effectiveness and principles of EIMT-PD. EIMT-PD, using synchronisation and emotional resonance may be a promising music therapy to improve emotion regulation and, in line with our expectations, reduce depressive symptoms. More research is needed to assess its effectiveness and principles.
