The transition towards a sustainable and healthy food system is one of the major sustainability challenges of today, next to the energy transition and the transition from a linear to circular economy. This paper provides a timely and evidence-based contribution to better understand the complex processes of institutional change and transformative social-ecological innovation that takes place in the food transition, through a case study of an open innovation and food transition network in The Netherlands, the South-Holland Food Family (Zuid-Hollandse Voedselfamilie). This network is supported by the provincial government and many partners, with the ambition to realize more sustainable agricultural and food chains, offering healthy, sustainable and affordable food for everyone in the Province of South-Holland in five to ten years from now. This ambition cannot be achieved through optimising the current food system. A transition is needed – a fundamental change of the food system’s structure, culture and practice. The Province has adopted a transition approach in its 2016 Innovation Agenda for Sustainable Agriculture. This paper provides an institutional analysis of how the transition approach has been established and developed in practice. Our main research question is what interventions and actions have shaped the transition approach and how does the dynamic interplay between actors and institutional structures influence institutional change, by analysing a series of closely related action situations and their context, looking at 'structure' and 'agency', and at the output-outcomes-impact of these action situations. For this purpose, we use the Transformative Social-Ecological Innovation (TSEI)-framework to study the dynamic interplay between actors and institutional structures influencing institutional change. The example of TSEI-framework application in this paper shows when and how local agents change the institutional context itself, which provides relevant insights on institutional work and the mutually constitutive nature of structure and agency. Above institutional analysis also shows the pivotal role of a number of actors, such as network facilitators and provincial minister, and their capability and skills to combine formal and informal institutional environments and logics and mobilize resources, thereby legitimizing and supporting the change effort. The results are indicative of the importance of institutional structures as both facilitating (i.e., the province’s policies) and limiting (e.g. land ownership) transition dynamics.

This manifesto describes the notion of sustainable development according to its basic appeal for economic, social and environmental value-creation, together with the implications of its meaning at the level of the individual (the manager), the organisation (the business) and society. As sustainable tourism is focused on the long term, foresight is used to develop four scenarios for a sustainable tourism industry in 2040: “back to the seventies”, “captured in fear”, “unique in the world”, and “shoulders to the wheel”. The implications of the scenarios are mapped for four distinct types of organisational DNA: the blue organisation focusing on quality, professionalism and efficiency, the red organisation for whom challenge, vision and change are most important, the yellow organisation addressing energy, optimism and growth, and the green organisation which is led by care, tradition and security. The manifest concludes with strategic propositions for tourism organisations in each of the four business types and each of the four scenarios.

Hoe kun je de impact van een ontwerpende aanpak op maatschappelijke opgaven versterken? Hoe kan een Programma Ontwerpende Aanpak daaraan bijdragen en wat is daarvoor nodig? Vanuit de ambitie van staatssecretaris Gunay Uslu om de inzet van ontwerp te versterken, is een pilot opgezet onder het penvoerderschap van CLICKNL om tot een meerjarig programmavoorstel te komen. Een team van ontwerpers en onderzoekers ging begin 2023 aan de slag met deze ontwerpopgave. Onze rol als onderzoekers is daarbij ook om te kijken naar wat er al is en scherper te krijgen wat we eigenlijk bedoelen als we het hebben over een ontwerpende aanpak in het kader van maatschappelijke opgaven. Maatschappelijke vraagstukken zijn complex en vaak gekoppeld aan grotere missies en transities op het gebied van o.a. klimaat, energie, landbouw en wonen. Het belang en de impact van deze transities reiken verder dan Nederland. Het zijn multinationale of zelfs mondiale vraagstukken. Wij nemen daarom een kijkje over de grens en gaan op zoek naar andere perspectieven op een ontwerpende aanpak. Hoe doen ze dat eigenlijk in andere landen? En wat kunnen we daarvan leren? Een eerste verkenning binnen ons netwerk leverde verrassende reacties op. In andere landen wordt vaak jaloers naar Nederland gekeken als het erom gaat hoe een ontwerpende aanpak en vooral ontwerpend onderzoek wordt gewaardeerd en gestimuleerd. Op onze beurt refereren wij in Nederland graag naar publicaties van de Design Council in Engeland en zijn we onder de indruk van het werk van het Danish Design Center. Is het gras dan echt altijd groener aan de overkant? Moeten we ons niet juist concentreren op hoe we elkaar aanvullen als het gaat om het samen aanpakken van maatschappelijke opgaven? We gingen in gesprek met een twaalftal onderzoekers, ontwerpers en andere changemakers die werkzaam zijn in Denemarken, Zweden, Engeland (UK) en voor de Europese Unie (EU). En we vroegen naar hun perspectieven op de waarde en rol van een ontwerpende aanpak ten aanzien van maatschappelijke opgaven. In dit stuk brengen we de gesprekken en reflecties samen om een beeld te schetsen van hoe het eraan toegaat in de landen die in onze ogen vooroplopen als het gaat om de toepassing van zo’n ontwerpende aanpak. Introduction Student success is positively linked to engagement, but negatively linked to emotional exhaustion. Though both constructs have been conceptualized as opposites previously, we hypothesize that students can demonstrate high or low engagement and emotional exhaustion simultaneously. We used quantitative and qualitative data to identify the existence of four student profiles based on engagement and exhaustion scores. Furthermore, we studied how profiles associate to study behaviour, wellbeing and academic achievement, and what risks, protective factors and support requirements students and teachers identify for these profiles. Methods The Student Wellbeing Monitor 2021, developed by Inholland University of Applied Sciences, was used to identify profiles using quadrant analyses based on high and low levels of engagement and emotional exhaustion (n= 1460). Correlation analyses assessed profile specific differences on study behaviours, academic delay, and wellbeing. Semi-structured interviews with students and teachers are currently in progress to further explore the profiles, to identify early signals, and to inspect support requirements. Results The quadrant analysis revealed four profiles: low engagement and low exhaustion (energised-disengaged; 9%), high engagement and low exhaustion (energised-engaged; 15%), low engagement and high exhaustion (exhausted-disengaged; 48%), and high engagement and high exhaustion (exhausted-engaged; 29%). Overall, engaged students demonstrated more active study behaviours and more social connections and interactions with fellow students and teachers. The exhausted students scored higher on depressive symptoms and stress. The exhausted-engaged students reported the highest levels of performance pressure, while the energised-disengaged students had the lowest levels of performance pressure. So far, students and teachers recognise the profiles and have suggested several support recommendations for each profile. Discussion The results show that students can be engaged but at the same time are exhausting themselves. A person-oriented mixed-methods approach helps students and teachers gain awareness of the diversity and needs of students, and improve wellbeing and student success.

Digital technologies permeate and transform organisational practices. As a society, we need means to explore the uncharted terrain that lies ahead and the desirability and consequences of possible courses of action to move forward. We investigate a design approach, called ‘future probing’, to envision and critically analyse possible futures around digital technologies. We first reconstruct our journey and describe related insights on the process, content and context level. Reflecting on the journey, we then extract a key insight revolving around the challenge for participants to link back from exploring the future to their present practice. In a first attempt at theorizing these difficulties, we see future probing as a practice that opens up adaptive space (Uhl-Bien & Arena, 2017) in which people from different backgrounds engage in dialogue about possible futures of digital technologies. We found that adaptive processes, like semi structuring, temporary decentralisation, and collaboration (Uhl-Bien & Arena, 2018) were supported by the future probing practices and seemed to create space for employees to engage in exploration. There was still a lack of compelling acts of brokering and network cohesion (Uhl-Bien & Arena, 2018). This may indicate why linking back to daily practice is challenging. We assume that organising for adaptability requires a deliberate act of connecting far future explorations with present action, and propose that besides explorative skills, ‘adaptive anticipating’ action is needed to make the connection and that linking back through near future experiments might be a way to achieve this.
