Background: Revealing tacit knowledge often is seen as very valuable for organizations, although it is usually challenging to enunciate and share this type of knowledge. Methods: This study uses a participatory design and the application of a board gaming simulation as instruments to extract tacit knowledge. To illustrate this application, the gaming simulation is played with entrepreneurs from horticulture. Horticulture represents a complex social system where tacit knowledge plays a major role in the trade process. A participatory design process is used to explore whether the design and play of gaming simulations enable participants to explicate their tacit knowledge. Participants’ participation in designing the gaming simulation explicated that reconstructing reality was a prerequisite for their commitment. Results: The results from playing simulation sessions show that participants were able to: (1) narrow down the anecdotic behaviour to a few factors; (2) to structure these factors; (3) explore how these factors relate to trade barriers and (4) to explain which tactics are applied to foster trade. Conclusion: The educational value of this study is that it helped entrepreneurs in understanding complex real-life situations.

Urban logistics is vital to keep the urban fabric running, but affects liveability while operators also have to deal with shrinking space in which they have to conduct operations. Despite this, there is primarily a lot of focus on decarbonising logistics as well as on logistics concepts to improve the efficiency of urban logistics going into urban areas. In this study we address the spatial footprint of logistics and possibilities to reduce this on a neighbuorhood level. We develop a typology with different archetype neighbourhoods in which we estimate the logistics footprint per area with a decomposition in different logistics segments and number of vehicles towards the year 2035. Based upon that we propose interventions for stakeholders to jointly reduce the negative impact. This study sheds more light on the importance of area.

Purpose – In the domain of healthcare, both process efficiency and the quality of care can be improved through the use of dedicated pervasive technologies. Among these applications are so-called real-time location systems (RTLS). Such systems are designed to determine and monitor the location of assets and people in real time through the use of wireless sensor networks. Numerous commercially available RTLS are used in hospital settings. The nursing home is a relatively unexplored context for the application of RTLS and offers opportunities and challenges for future applications. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – This paper sets out to provide an overview of general applications and technologies of RTLS. Thereafter, it describes the specific healthcare applications of RTLS, including asset tracking, patient tracking and personnel tracking. These overviews are followed by a forecast of the implementation of RTLS in nursing homes in terms of opportunities and challenges. Findings – By comparing the nursing home to the hospital, the RTLS applications for the nursing home context that are most promising are asset tracking of expensive goods owned by the nursing home in orderto facilitate workflow and maximise financial resources, and asset tracking of personal belongings that may get lost due to dementia. Originality/value – This paper is the first to provide an overview of potential application of RTLS technologies for nursing homes. The paper described a number of potential problem areas that can be addressed by RTLS. In order to apply smart charging it is key to be able to forecast the connection and charging time of charging sessions at the start of the connection. For, if you know how long a session will last, one can assign an appropriate smart charging strategy for that session. For instance by postponing the charging to a moment with lower energy prices or more renewable energy generation. This study presents the work of SIMULAAD in predicting charging and connection times.

Europe continues to be affected by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which has brought about high inflation rates, surging energy prices and general geopolitical instability. All of these notonly impact the purchasing power of consumers but also disrupt markets and global supply chains. Despite this, the findings of this year’s report show that e-commerce still continues to grow. In fact, the turnover in European B2C e-commerce increased from €849bn in 2021 to €899bn in 2022, even though the growth rate did decrease from 12% in 2021 to 6% in 2022. That said, thegrowth rate for 2023 is forecast to slightly increase to 8%, with the turnover in European B2C e-commerce also continuing its positive growth tendency.

Pressure on healthcare The Netherlands is an aging country. According to the Dutch Bureau for Economic Policy Analysis (CPB), the aging of the population will become evident in the next government’s term of office, i.e. 2022–2025, alongside an increase of healthcare costs with an annual average of 2.7% (CPB, 2019). This trend, with regard to an increasingly aging population, is set to continue in coming decades, and at its expected height in 2039, the Netherlands will have 4.6 million inhabitants aged 65 or older (CBS, 2018; CPB, 2019). In addition, elderly adults are also reaching older ages. In this way, the share of people over 80 has increased in 50 years from one in 74 to one in 25. According to the Dutch Central Agency for Statistics in their report Population, Gender and Age Forecast 2019–2060 (CBS, 2018), around 2050, one out of every ten people will belong to the group that we now count as the eldest.

Air transportation has grown in an unexpected way during last decades and is expected to increase even more in the next years. Traffic growth tendencies forecast an expansion in the demand and greater aviation connectivity, but also higher workload to the different airspace users, especially for airport and services. Therefore, it is essential to employ strategies designed to use efficiently valuable corporate resource. Airport authorities around the world are investing in large capital projects, including new or improved runways, terminal expansions, and entirely new airports. However, this effort is sometimes limited due to their geographic location. In this work, two main objectives are pursued: first, to highlight the importance of the industry by exposing the current situation and future trends all over the world focusing in the Mexican industry; and second, to introduce a simulation model which can be used as a decision making tool for the upcoming demand. The analysis of the scenarios illustrates how to develop strategies to cope with the different airspace user's needs.
