Previous investigations of consumer subcultures in the CCT tradition focused primarily on consumer behaviours, feelings, experiences and meanings of consumption. This paper advocates that in order to deeply understand and interpret a particular subculture, researchers in consumer culture should consider more thoroughly the interaction between consumers and producers in consumption markets. This argument is illustrated with a research project on lifestyle sports. From the results of this study it appears that producers play a vital and interdependent role in meaning and interpretation processes. It is argued that processes in which consumers give meaning to activities can not be isolated from the processes in which producers ascribe meanings to activities, settings and markets. In this 'circuit of culture', production and consumption are not completely separate spheres of existence but rather are mutually constitutive of one another (Du Gay, Hall, Janes, Mackay, & Negus, 1997).

The Kenyan supreme court recently struck down a government decision to ban the registration of an LGBTIQ+ community rights organisation, sparking new homophobic rhetoric in the country. Kenya is one of 32 African countries that criminalises homosexuality. Those who identify as part of the LGBTIQ+ community are often discriminated against, harassed and assaulted. Lise Woensdregt and Naomi van Stapele, who have researched queer experiences in Kenya for nine years, explain the impact of this ruling.

RuPaul herself is a drag queen, a gay man and a television host, excelling in all three like no other. We are using ‘herself’ rather than ‘himself’, as one of the authors feels more comfortable calling Ru a ‘she’. RuPaul does not care about pronouns: ‘You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis & Cathy Lee; I don’t care!

As a strategy to better manage the social-exclusionary impacts of overtourism, urban decision-makers in Amsterdam are looking at the physical spreading of events to better manage crowds, mobility and anti-social behaviour. Perceptions of safety, security and exclusion can vary significantly across the city and communities, threatening its status as a leading gay destination in Europe. These may impact proposals being made to Amsterdam Pride Week that look to spread visitors as much as possible over the city and its surroundings. By venturing beyond the ‘safe’ inner city, can the event still act as an agent for social change, or will its presence displace unwelcome conflicts in periurban neighbourhoods?

There are huge opportunities to use commercial, artistic video games as educational tools. This talks about one example where a commercial artistic/entertainment video game was created that also addressed content with both societal and educational impact. The game ‘Fragments of Him’ touches on topics of gay/bisexual relationships, love, family, intergenerational conflict, mourning, and more. It has been used as a teaching tool for both the content and the processes of creation, and has been released commercially on multiple gaming platforms. It proves that, with sufficient investment and quality in the interface, art, and interaction design, commercial video games can have significant pro-social and educational applications.

At its core, raving has existed in opposition to normativity, and so has electronic music. If newcomers enticed by hard trance remixes of 2000’s Top 40 hits embrace this opposition, it is often done in ways removed from history. As Loren Granic AKA Goddollars, co-founder and resident of A Club Called Rhonda in Los Angeles, stated: “Many of the newcomers are straight/white kids who are very far removed from the LGBT community, despite fist-pumping by the millions to a music that was born from gay people of colour sweating their asses off at 5 AM in a Chicago warehouse.” If the role marginalized people have played in the creation and pioneering of their favourite music is ignored, how would people react when told that their fun might also harm marginalized groups? The ethics of lockdown raves have always been fraught, as their repercussions reverberate beyond the people who choose to attend them; meanwhile, data shows that people of colour were more likely to be targeted for attending raves during the lockdown.

This article proposes a strategy for Switzerland to change the goal from HIV control to HIV elimination. In Switzerland, HIV treatment is well organized and available for all with good access. An important challenge that obstructs prevention is the new infections originating from people who are unaware of their status. Since the majority of new infections in Switzerland are within the group of men who have sex with men (MSM), this strategy targets MSM who do not know their HIV status and engage in risky sexual behavior.
