The main question in this PhD thesis is: How can Business Rules Management be configured and valued in organizations? A BRM problem space framework is proposed, existing of service systems, as a solution to the BRM problems. In total 94 vendor documents and approximately 32 hours of semi-structured interviews were analyzed. This analysis revealed nine individual service systems, in casu elicitation, design, verification, validation, deployment, execution, monitor, audit, and version. In the second part of this dissertation, BRM is positioned in relation to BPM (Business Process Management) by means of a literature study. An extension study was conducted: a qualitative study on a list of business rules formulated by a consulting organization based on the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission risk framework. Four focus group interviews were held with nurses, recruited from eight wards of two general hospitals, to explore nurses' perceptions of self-management and self-management support of older patients during hospitalization. A thematic analyze of the interview transcripts was conducted. Regarding nurses understanding of self-management two perceptions emerged namely 'being self-reliant' and 'being in control'. In terms of their understanding self-management support three perceptions emerged: encouraging patients to perform activities of daily living (ADL); stimulating patient participation; and increasing patients' awareness. We also found seven themes relating to nurses' beliefs regarding older patients' self-management and self-management support during hospitalization. Results indicate that nurses have a limited understanding of self-management and do not fully understand what is expected from them with regards to inpatients' self-management. It is feasible to argue that addressing nurses' beliefs can influence nurses intention and behavior regarding supporting older inpatients' self-management.

From the article: "The vast amount of previous research on project management competence does not provide a basis for educational needs. Analyzing previous research poses two challenges: the lack of a uniform list of competences, necessitating a taxonomy, and the use of importance as a criterion, favoring general important competences. Criticality is introduced as the competence a project manager adds to the team. Validation research using criticality and the taxonomy among experienced Dutch project managers is more comprehensive and provides a less focus on general important competences than previous research. Criticality focuses more on the essence of the profession."

Background: Dermoscopy is known to increase the diagnostic accuracy of pigmented skin lesions (PSLs) when used by trained professionals. The effect of dermoscopy training on the diagnostic ability of dermal therapists (DTs) has not been studied so far. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate whether DTs, in comparison with general practitioners (GPs), benefited from a training programme including dermoscopy, in both their ability to differentiate between different forms of PSL and to assign the correct therapeutic strategy. Methods: In total, 24 DTs and 96 GPs attended a training programme on PSLs. Diagnostic skills as well as therapeutic strategy were assessed, prior to the training (pretest) and after the training (post-test) using clinical images alone, as well as after the addition of dermatoscopic images (integrated post-test). Bayesian hypothesis testing was used to determine statistical significance of differences between pretest, post-test and integrated post-test scores. Results: Both the DTs and the GPs demonstrated benefit from the training: at the integrated post-test, the median proportion of correctly diagnosed PSLs was 73% (range 30–90) for GPs and 63% (range 27–80) for DTs. A statistically significant difference between pretest results and integrated test results was seen, with a Bayes factor>100. At 12 percentage points higher, the GPs outperformed DTs in the accuracy of detecting PSLs. Conclusions: The study shows that a training programme focusing on PSLs while including dermoscopy positively impacts detection of PSLs by DTs and GPs. This training programme could form an integral part of the training of DTs in screening procedures, although additional research is needed.

From the article: Abstract Since decision management is becoming an integrated part of business process management, more and more decision management implementations are realized. Therefore, organizations search for guidance to design such solutions. Principles are often applied to guide the design of information systems in general. A particular area of interest when designing decision management solutions is compliance. In an earlier published study (Zoet & Smit, 2016) we took a general perspective on principles regarding the design of decision management solutions. In this paper, we re-address our earlier work, yet from a different perspective, the compliance perspective. Thus, we analyzed how the principles can be utilized in the design of compliant decision management solutions. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to specify, classify, and validate compliance principles. To identify relevant compliance principles, we conducted a three round focus group and three round Delphi Study which led to the identification of eleven compliance principles. These eleven principles can be clustered into four categories: 1) surface structure principles, 2) deep structure principles, 3) organizational structure principles, and 4) physical structure principles. The identified compliance principles provide a framework to take into account when designing information systems, taking into account the risk management and compliance perspective.
