Design and research are two fields of knowledge that each has its traditions, methods, standards and practices. These two worlds appear to be quite separate, with researchers investigating what exists, and designers visualising what could be. This book builds a bridge between both worlds by showing how design and research can be integrated to develop a new field of knowledge. This book contains 22 inspiring reflections that demonstrate how the unique qualities of research (aimed at studying the present) and design (aimed at developing the future) can be combined. This book shows that the transdisciplinary approach is applicable in a multitude of sectors, ranging from healthcare, urban planning, circular economy, and the food industry. Arranged in five parts, the book offers a range of illustrative examples, experiences, methods, and interpretations. Together they make up the characteristic of a mosaic, each piece contributing a part of the complete picture, and all pieces together offering a multi-facted perspective of what applied design research is, how it is implemented and what the reader can expect from it.

The Hague University of Applied Sciences has high ambitions in the field of internationalisation. Two out of four priorities in the institutional policy touch this theme: global citizenship and internationalisation. In order to ensure that the curriculum of the new degree programme HBO ICT meets these priorities, it is interesting to know which international competencies the ICT sector requires. The main research questions in this report is: Which international competencies does the ICT sector demand of ICT graduates and how can these be embedded in the curriculum of the new HBO ICT degree programme? That the question is relevant, is shown by the fact that 25% of the respondents, ICT graduates, indicated that they actually work abroad for longer and shorter periods. In this research an online survey was held among alumni (n = 315) of the precursors of the HBO ICT degree programme in order to find out which international competencies are important. By conducting interviews on the same target group, this information was deepened. In an online survey among graduation supervisors (n = 202) it is examined to what extent the graduates master the required skills by the end of their training. This combined information provides the input to develop the new curriculum of the HBO ICT degree programme and its specialisations. The results show that English and especially English listening and reading skills are considered to be very important. Our alumni master these skills highly satisfactorily. It was specifically mentioned, however, that alumni must overcome a certain reluctance to speak. Intercultural and personal and social competencies are found very important. To master these competencies, students should learn by experiencing. This can be done by working together in international teams, but also in national teams as long as they are supervised explicitly on intercultural, personal and social competencies. As far as the international academic and professional competencies concerned, especially internationally accepted professional knowledge is considered important. On these categories the HBO ICT graduates score satisfactorily (a score of 6 or 6,5 out of 10). Depending on the ambitions of the programme, some improvements could be made here. In general, the ICT sector is quite satisfied with the extent to which our students possess international competencies they consider to be relevant. However, there are suggestions for improvement and some of them have already been included in the toolkit internationalisation as part of the development of the curriculum of HBO ICT.
In this presentation a comparison is made between the state of art of healthcare in the Netherlands compared to other European countries. Dutch healthcare is of a high quality, the Netherlands rank among the top in Europe, but in-patient costs are high. Expenditures are now almost 100 billion euros. Therefor the Netherlands are facing quite some challenges: rising costs due to ageing, more chronic diseases, use of medication, long stay care etc and pressure on staff and waiting lists. Fresh brains (students Logistics from BUas) can help to improve healthcare and reduce costs. Lecturers and students work together in projects with the healthcare sector (learning communities) and students do their internship in various healthcare organizations (cure and care). In this presentation two examples of graduation assignments are mentioned. One student did research on the implementation of barcodes on primary packaging of pharmaceuticals, another student did research on reducing the length of stay for patients with a hip fracture. They came with useful recommendations for improving patient safety, patient satisfaction and reducing costs.
The postdoc candidate, Giuliana Scuderi, will strengthen the connection between the research group Biobased Buildings (BB), (collaboration between Avans University of Applied Sciences and HZ University of Applied Sciences (HZ), and the Civil Engineering bachelor programme (CE) of HZ. The proposed research aims at deepening the knowledge about the mechanical properties of biobased materials for the application in the structural and infrastructural sectors. The research is relevant for the professional field, which is looking for safe and sustainable alternatives to traditional building materials (such as lignin asphalt, biobased panels for bridge constructions, etc.). The study of the mechanical behaviour of traditional materials (such as concrete and steel) is already part of the CE curriculum, but the ambition of this postdoc is that also BB principles are applied and visible. Therefore, from the first year of the programme, the postdoc will develop a biobased material science line and will facilitate applied research experiences for students, in collaboration with engineering and architectural companies, material producers and governmental bodies. Consequently, a new generation of environmentally sensitive civil engineers could be trained, as the labour market requires. The subject is broad and relevant for the future of our built environment, with possible connections with other fields of study, such as Architecture, Engineering, Economics and Chemistry. The project is also relevant for the National Science Agenda (NWA), being a crossover between the routes “Materialen – Made in Holland” and “Circulaire economie en grondstoffenefficiëntie”. The final products will be ready-to-use guidelines for the applications of biobased materials, a portfolio of applications and examples, and a new continuous learning line about biobased material science within the CE curriculum. The postdoc will be mentored and supervised by the Lector of the research group and by the study programme coordinator. The personnel policy and job function series of HZ facilitates the development opportunity.
Het Hanze Innovation Traineeship Pilot project is geïnitieerd op de Hanzehogeschool Groningen door drie onderzoeksgroepen (lectoraten) die zijn ingebed in het Marian van Os Centre of Expertise Ondernemen (CoEO). De trainees worden gecoacht in een Community of Learners en begeleid door een diverse groep van onderzoekers van de volgende onderzoeksgroepen van de Hanzehogeschool Groningen: (1) International Business, (2) Marketing/Marktgericht Ondernemen en (3) User-Centered Design. Het doel van het programma is om regionale MKBs in Noord-Nederland te ondersteunen om duurzaam te innoveren met de hulp en ondersteuning van trainees en onderzoekers van de drie onderzoeksgroepen. De trainees worden begeleid bij het ontwikkelen en implementeren van een door onderzoek ondersteunde innovatie tijdens een afstudeerproject en een 12-maanden durende traineeship bij het bedrijf. Bij de start van het programma ondergaan de MKBs een innovatie-gezondheids-check die wordt herhaald nadat de traineeship is afgerond. Over het algemeen zouden de bedrijven hun bedrijfsprestaties en innovatiecapaciteit moeten kunnen verbeteren door middel van het programma. Verder zal de onderzoekssamenwerking tussen de onderzoeksgroepen van de Hanzehogeschool en de MKBs leiden tot een beter inzicht in innovatiebarrières en succesfactoren. De opgedane kennis over regionale MKB-innovatie zal in alle sectoren en industrieën worden geprojecteerd. Vacation travel is an essential ingredient in quality of life. However, the contriubtion of vacations to quality of life could be improved in two ways: by optimizing the decisions people make when planning and undertaking their vacations, and by travel industry testing and implementing––based on evidence––innovative experience products which touch customers' emotions. Secondary analysis of two longitudinal panel datasets will address the impact of people's decisions in planning and undertaking their vacations, on their quality of life. Field experiments in cooperation with travel industry partners will address the effects of innovative experience products, such as apps designed to help vacationers meet fellow travelers, or personalized memory books designed to help people relive their vacations after return home. Experience data in these field experiments will be collected using technology of the Breda University of Applied Sciences' Experience Measurement Lab, a unique facility for measuring emotions continuously from research participants' body and mind. Thus, the project will contribute to general understanding of quality of life, will feed valuable knowledge about experience design, measurement, and implementation to the Dutch travel industry, and will support the Breda University of Applied Sciences' key research theme of Designing, Measuring, and Managing Experiences. Inspiring examples from the project will reinforce research methods courses in the academic Bachelor of Science in Tourism, the HBO Master in Tourism Destination Management, and the academic Master of Science in Leisure Studies. Wearable emotion measurement from the field experiment will be a cornerstone of the fourth-year HBO-bachelor module Business Intelligence, where students will conduct their own research projects on experience measurement using consumer wearables, based on knowledge from this postdoc project. Finally, a number of methodological and content questions within the project will serve as suitable thesis assignments for graduation students in the above educational tracks.
