Although it is advocated that end-users are engaged in developing evidence-based injury prevention training to enhance the implementation, this rarely happens. The ‘Implementing injury Prevention training ROutines in TEams and Clubs in youth Team handball (I-PROTECT)’ uses an ecological participatory design incorporating the perspectives of multiple stakeholders throughout the project. Within the I-PROTECT project, the current study aimed to describe the development of holistic injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players through using knowledge from both end-users (coaches and players) and researchers/handball experts. Employing action evaluation within participatory action research, the cyclical development process included three phases: research team preparation, handball expert-based preparation and end-user evaluation to develop injury prevention training incorporating both physical and psychological perspectives. To grow the knowledge of the interdisciplinary research team, rethinking was conducted within and between phases based on participants’ contributions. Researchers and end-users cocreated examples of handball-specific exercises, including injury prevention physical principles (movement technique for upper and lower extremities, respectively, and muscle strength) combined with psychological aspects (increase end-user motivation, task focus and body awareness) to integrate into warm-up and skills training within handball practice. A cyclical development process that engaged researchers/handball experts and end-users to cocreate evidence-based, theory-informed and context-specific injury prevention training specifically for youth handball players generated a first pilot version of exercises including physical principles combined with psychological aspects to be integrated within handball practice.

Background: In team handball an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury often occurs during landing after a jump shot. Many intervention programs try to reduce the injury rate by instructing the athletes to land safer. Video feedback is an effective way to provide feedback although little is known about its influence on landing technique in sport-specific situations. Objective: To test the effectiveness of a video overlay feedback method on landing technique in elite handball players. Method: Sixteen elite female handball players were assigned to a Control or Video Group. Both groups performed jump shots in a pre-test, two training sessions (TR1 & TR2) and a post-test. The Video Group received video feedback of an expert model with an overlay of their own jump shots in TR1 and TR2 whilst the Control Group did not. Main outcome measures were sagittal ankle, knee and hip angles during initial contact (IC), maximum (MAX) and range of motion (ROM), in addition to the Landing Error Scoring System (LESS) score. One 2x4 repeated measures ANOVA was conducted to analyze group, time and interaction effects of all kinematic outcome measures and the LESS score. Results: The Video Group displayed significant improvement in knee and hip flexion at IC, MAX and ROM. In addition, MAX ankle flexion and their LESS score improved an average of 8.1 in the pre-test to 4.0 in the post-test. When considering performance variables, no differences between Control Group and Video Group were found in shot accuracy or vertical jump height, whilst horizontal jump distance in the Video Group became greater over time. Conclusion: Overlay visual feedback is an effective method to improve landing kinematics during a sport-specific jump shot. Further research is now warranted to determine the long-term effects and transfer to training and game situations.

Background: Deceptive movements occur when an actor seeks to fake, hide or delay kinematic information about their true movement outcomes. The purpose of deceptive movements is to impair the perception of opponents (the ‘observer’) to gain an advantage over them. We argue though that a lack of conceptual clarity has led to confusion about what deception is and in understanding the different approaches by which an actor can deceive their opponent. The aim of this article is to outline a conceptual framework for understanding deceptive movements in sport. Main body: Adopting Interpersonal Deception Theory from the field of communication, we define deception as when an actor deliberately alters their actions in an attempt to impair the ability of an observer to anticipate their true action outcomes. Further, deception can be achieved either by what we define as deceit, the act of providing false information, or disguise, the act of concealing the action outcome. Skilled athletes often have actions that are difficult to anticipate, but an action is only classified as containing deception if the actor has explicit intent to deceive an observer. Having outlined the conceptual framework, we then review existing empirical findings on the skilled perception of deceptive movements considering the framework. This approach includes a critical evaluation of the mechanisms known to facilitate the perceptual ability to prevent being deceived, including a consideration of visual search strategies, confidence, the contribution of visual and motor experiences, and the influence of response biases and action capabilities on perceptual performance. Conclusion: The distinction between deceit and disguise particularly helps to show that most research has examined deceit, with little known about how an actor can more effectively disguise their action, or about how an observer can improve their ability to anticipate the outcome of disguised actions. The insights help to identify fruitful areas for future research and outline implications for skill acquisition and performance enhancement.
