Purpose: To get insight into personal meaning of a person involved in a physical therapy intervention. Methods: Mrs. A, a 76-year-old woman is referred to a physical therapist (PT) for assessment of functioning and training before total hip arthroplasty (THA). The patient, her daughter, and PT were asked to write a story about their daily life. Stories were analyzed according to the narrative scheme based on a method to find meaning in daily life, which consists of four phases: 1. Motivation; 2. Competences; 3. Performance; and 4. Evaluation. Results: Mrs. A was mainly motivated by her will to do enjoyable social activities and stay independent. Although she tried her best to undertake activities (performance) that made her proud (evaluation), her pain and physical limitations were anti-competences that motivated her to attend healthcare. Although the PT seemed to be aware of personal participation goals, her main motivation was to improve and evaluate functions and activities. The daughter was motivated by good relationships and did not see herself as informal caregiver.

There is ongoing discussion about whether preoperative obesity is negatively associated with inpatient outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA). The aim was to investigate the interaction between obesity and muscle strength and the association with postoperative inpatient recovery after THA. Preoperative obesity (body mass index (BMI)>30 kg/m2) and muscle weakness (hand grip strength <20 kg for woman and <30 kg for men) were measured about 6 weeks before THA. Patients with a BMI<18.5 kg/m2 were excluded. Outcomes were delayed inpatient recovery of activities (>2 days to reach independence of walking) and prolonged length of hospital stay (LOS, >4 days and/or discharge to extended rehabilitation). Univariate and multivariable regression analyses with the independent variables muscle weakness and obesity, and the interaction between obesity and muscle weakness, were performed and corrected for possible confounders.

Background: Postoperative rehabilitation after primary total hip arthroplasty (p-THA) differs between the Netherlands and Germany. Aim is to compare clinical effectiveness and to get a first impression of cost effectiveness of Dutch versus German usual care after p-THA. Methods: A transnational prospective controlled observational trial. Clinical effectiveness was assessed with self-reported questionnaires and functional tests. Measurements were taken preoperatively and 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 6 months postoperatively. For cost effectiveness, long-term economic aspects were assessed from a societal perspective. Results: 124 working-age patients finished the measurements. German usual care leads to a significantly larger proportion (65.6% versus 47.5%) of satisfied patients 12 weeks postoperatively and significantly better self-reported function and Five Times Sit-to-Stand Test (FTSST) results. German usual care is generally 45% more expensive than Dutch usual care, and 20% more expensive for working-age patients. A scenario analysis assumed that German patients work the same number of hours as the Dutch, and that productivity costs are the same. This analysis revealed German care is still more expensive but the difference decreased to 8%. Conclusions: German rehabilitation is clinically advantageous yet more expensive, although comparisons are less straightforward as the socioeconomic context differs between the two countries. De meerderheid van de gepromoveerden en postdocs komt terecht in een baan buiten de wetenschap. Toch weten we maar weinig over hoe ze dit ervaren. Nieuw onderzoek onder zowel gepromoveerden als hun niet-wetenschappelijke werkgevers laat zien dat de veronderstelde kloof tussen wetenschap en bedrijfsleven minder groot is dan dikwijls gedacht. Hoe kunnen we die verder dichten?

Kinderen zijn beduidend zwaarder en minder actief dan vroeger. Docenten Lichamelijke Opvoeding (LO) zouden een belangrijke rol kunnen spelen in het ombuigen van deze trends, onder andere door zich meer te richten op de motorische vaardigheid van kinderen, een belangrijke voorspeller van een meer actieve leefstijl op latere leeftijd. Uit de Nulmeting Bewegingsonderwijs (Reijgersberg et al., 2013) komt naar voren dat niet duidelijk is in hoeverre docenten LO bijdragen aan de motorische vaardigheid van kinderen. Om hier meer inzicht in te krijgen is behoefte aan een valide, betrouwbaar en praktisch toepasbaar meetinstrument. In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op het meten van de motorische vaardigheid binnen de context van de lichamelijke opvoeding met een nieuw meetinstrument: het Athletic Skills (AS)-beweegparcours.
