Learning mathematical thinking and reasoning is a main goal in mathematical education. Instructional tasks have an important role in fostering this learning. We introduce a learning sequence to approach the topic of integrals in secondary education to support students mathematical reasoning while participating in collaborative dialogue about the integral-as-accumulation-function. This is based on the notion of accumulation in general and the notion of accumulative distance function in particular. Through a case-study methodology we investigate how this approach elicits 11th grade students’ mathematical thinking and reasoning. The results show that the integral-as-accumulation-function has potential, since the notions of accumulation and accumulative function can provide a strong intuition for mathematical reasoning and engage students in mathematical dialogue. Implications of these results for task design and further research are discussed.

Designs for improving energy efficiency in historical buildings are tailor made. For initiators the flexible character of design processes raises uncertainty about why certain energy measures are (not) allowed. How is decision making in thedesign process organised? And what mechanisms influence tailor made designs? In this paper we present an integral design method for energy efficient restoration. Our theoretical background draws on two sources. Firstly, we follow design theory with distinct generic and specific designs. Secondly we use the ‘heritage-as-a-spatial-factor’ approach, where participants with different backgrounds focus on adding value to heritage. By applying the integral design method, we evaluate decision making processes and reflect on heritage approaches. We suggest how the integral design method can be improved andquestion the parallel existence of heritage approaches.

In the floodplains of the Rhine branches in the Netherlands, many so called ‘flood free’ areas can be found. These areas remain dry during extreme river discharges. In the province of Gelderland alone, over 80 of such areas exist. The province of Gelderland and Rijkswaterstaat have formally agreed to investigate the possibilities to redevelop these (mainly) former stone brick factory terrains. In this project, multiple stakeholders combine their views on the redevelopment of these areas: flood safety (Rijkswaterstaat), economic development (KNB, for the ceramic industry), nature and maintenance (Staatsbosbeheer, owner of several areas), cultural heritage (RCE, government institution for cultural heritage) and three educational institutes (VHL/HAN Universities of Applied Sciences, MBO Helicon Velp).

This entry starts with a chronological discussion of the different conceptualizations of work-family balance over time. Where pioneering studies focused on work-family (and family-work) conflict, more recent studies introduced the concepts of work-family (and family-work) enrichment and more holistic work-family constructs. Subsequently, frequently examined antecedents and consequences of work-family conflict and enrichment are presented. In addition, a critical discussion of the work-family literature is given by, among others, reflecting on the small amount of studies examining work-family concepts within a (cross-) cultural or social context. This entry concludes with the presentation of several directions for future work-family research including the proposition of an integral framework.

Summary Project objectives This study fits into a larger research project on logistics collaboration and outsourcing decisions. The final objective of this larger project is to analyze the logistics collaboration decision in more detail to identify thresholds in these decisions. To reach the overall objectives, the first step is to get a clearer picture on the chemical and logistics service providers industry, sectors of our study, and on logistics collaboration in these sectors. The results of this first phase are presented in this report. Project Approach The study consists of two parts: literature review and five case studies within the chemical industry. The literature covers three topics: logistics collaboration, logistics outsourcing and purchasing of logistics services. The five case studies are used to refine the theoretical findings of the literature review. Conclusions Main observations during the case studies can be summarized as follows: Most analyzed collaborative relationships between shippers and logistics service providers in the chemical industry are still focused on operational execution of logistics activities with a short term horizon. Supply management design and control are often retained by the shippers. Despite the time and cost intensive character of a logistics service buying process, shippers tendering on a very regular basis. The decision to start a new tender project should more often be based on an integral approach that includes all tender related costs. A lower frequency of tendering could create more stability in supply chains. Beside, it will give both, shippers and LSPs, the possibility to improve the quality of the remaining projects. Price is still a dominating decision criterion in selecting a LSP. This is not an issue as long as the comparison of costs is based on an integral approach, and when shippers balance the cost criterion within their total set of criteria for sourcing logistics services. At the shippers' side there is an increased awareness of the need of more solid collaboration with logistics service providers. Nevertheless, in many cases this increased awareness does not actually result in the required actions to establish more intensive collaboration. Over the last years the logistics service providers industry was characterized by low profit margins, strong fragmentation and price competition. Nowadays, the market for LSPs is changing, because of an increasing demand for logistics services. To benefit from this situation a more pro-active role of the service providers is required in building stronger relationships with their customers. They should pay more attention on mid and long term possibilities in a collaborative relation, in stead of only be focused on running the daily operation.

This paper presents an integral assessment tool for the social and ecological embedding of a farm. In transitioning towards sustainable farming systems, a product-baed view as well as a location-based view is needed. The location-based perspective focuses on the combined effects of farming practices on the social and ecological context of the farm. Based on a need expressed in practice, and inspired by Doughnut economics, the FarmingTree Tool was designed. Using a qualitative assessment of on-farm activities for six social and ten ecological themes, this farm assessment tool supports awareness of and communication on the situation of the farm. Testing of the tool in various contexts showed a high added value for communication between the farmer and stakeholders with an interest in the development of the farm. The tool creates a shared understanding of the farm allowing to discuss farm development options in a clear manner with stakeholders with a specific interest in the development of the farm, like local food systems or in a lesser-tenant situation and as well students in farming related studies. The tool strengthens the farmer in conveying the 'story' of the farm in its entirety and its complexity. Keywords: farming, assessment tool, Doughnut Economics, strategy, embedding

Poster presented at EFYE 2018. Strengthening the wellbeing of students is an increasingly important approach of the development of students’ social, emotional and academic skills. Personal wellbeing motivates, among other things, students to learn and increases academic involvement and performance accordingly (Noble et al., 2008). According to the Centre for Education of Statistics and Evaluation (CESE, 2015) the educational welfare of students is also important for another reason; the recognition that teaching is not just about achieving academic performance, but also about the welfare of the student as a whole (intellectual, physical, social, emotional, moral and spiritual). Recent studies indicate that more and more students suffer from (mental) health problems (LSvB 2013, 2017; Schaufeli et al., 2002). The aim of the Student Wellbeing Project at Inholland University of Applied Sciences is to 1) investigate the state of student wellbeing in Dutch higher education and investigate the factors that influence wellbeing, 2) explore and offer best practices to improve student wellbeing (curative and preventive) 3) establish a strong (international) partnership and collaborate to improve student wellbeing.
