This paper explores inter-organisational relationships, in terms of cooperation, between three main types of sport providers at the local level: voluntary sport clubs, for-profit fitness and health clubs, and local sports authorities. Both withinand cross-sector cooperation are analysed and related to organisational characteristics as well as the perceived competition from other sport providers. Data are obtained from three quantitative panel surveys: the Flemish Sport Club Panel 2009, the Flemish Fitness Panel 2009, and the Flemish Local Sports Authorities Panel 2010. The results show that sport providers influence and are influenced by other sport providers in their environment. The three selected groups of sport providers differ with regard to the occurrence and the nature of the cooperation. Local sports authorities (i.e., public sector) are found to be the most cooperative sport provider. Evidence is provided for the use of cooperation as a strategy to meet competitive challenges.

Staffing practices in long-term care lack a clear evidence base and often seem to be guided by opinions instead of evidence. While stakeholders believe intuitively that there is a positive relationship between staffing levels and quality in nursing homes, the research literature is contradictory (1). In this editorial we consider the evidence found in a literature study that we conducted for the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sports (VWS). The aim of this study was to summarize all available evidence on the relationship between staffing and quality in nursing homes. Specifically, we focused on the quantity and the educational background of staff and quality in nursing homes. The literature study has contributed to the recent Dutch quality framework for nursing homes (Kwaliteitskader verpleeghuiszorg in Dutch) of the National Health Care Institute. This quality framework was published in January 2017 and provides norms – among other quality aspects – for nursing home staffing. As well as a description of the main findings of the literature study, we present implications for different stakeholders charged with staffing issues in nursing homes.

Outsourcing of business processes and information technology (IT) operations is an important trend in large and middle-sized organizations. However, outsourcing could affect the organization’s ability to align its IT with business strategy and operations. This article reports a qualitative study into the relationship between IT outsourcing (ITO) and business and IT alignment. It aims to provide recommendations for outsourcers and service providers on how outsourcing relationships should develop in order to support business and IT alignment. The research question of the study is “What is the effect of IT outsourcing on the business and IT alignment of companies that have outsourced their IT?”After a review of relevant literature and concepts, four cases are reported. The study revealed that a higher level of motivation for outsourcing paired with a higher level of the relationship between outsourcer and service provider and with a higher level of alignment maturity of the outsourcer. The study also showed that the ITO relationship is influenced by organizational turbulence on one or either side of the relationship and that the service providers tend to assess the relationship on a higher level than the outsourcers. These conclusions provide relevant directions for both outsourcers and service providers for improvement of the their relationship

Background: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are an overlooked risk factor for behavioural, mental and physical health disparities in children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and borderline intellectual functioning (BIF). Aims: To gain insight into the presence of the 10 original Wave II ACEs and family context risk variables in a convenience sample of children with ID and BIF in Dutch residential care. Methods and procedures: 134 case-files of children with ID (n = 82) and BIF (n = 52) were analysed quantitatively. Outcomes and results: 81.7 % of the children with ID experienced at least 1 ACE, as did 92.3 % of the children with BIF. The average number of ACEs in children with ID was 2.02 (range 0???? 8) and in children with BIF 2.88 (range 0???? 7). About 20 % of the children with moderate and mild ID experienced 4 ACEs or more. Many of their families faced multiple and complex problems (ID: 69.5 %; BIF 86.5 %). Multiple regression analysis indicated an association between family context risk variables and the number of ACEs in children. Conclusions and implications: The prevalence of ACEs in children with ID and BIF appears to be considerably high. ACEs awareness in clinical practice is vital to help mitigate negative outcomes.

The goal of this study is to identify the perspectives that development NGOs attribute to organisational social media, and furthermore elaborate on an appropriate categorisation of these perspectives for social media use by development NGOs. How social media is used in the area of development, where the use goes far beyond the private sector purpose of publicity and converting a sale, is a key issue for NGOs. Fourteen development NGOs from the Netherlands that are actively using social media were selected for this study. Interviews were conducted to collect data from the decision makers and practitioners in these organisations. The grounded theory method combined with a multiple case study was applied for data analysis. The resulting preliminary framework presents us with four emerging perspectives, namely Technological, Individual, Collective and Contextual perspectives attributed to organisational social media use. We theorise that there are relationships between these four perspectives. This paper suggests that the understanding of (organisational) social media use among development NGOs can be better understood by identifying these perspectives and their inter-relationships. The implications of these findings for the literature on affordances and organisational social media use in the context of development and NGOs are discussed. Bedrijven bevinden zich tegenwoordig vaak in een keten. Een keten kan worden beschouwd als een verzameling organisaties die een virtueel netwerk delen waar informatie, diensten, goederen of geld doorheen stroomt. Hierbij staan ICT-systemen veelal centraal. Deze afhankelijkheid werkt in de hand dat cyber-gerelateerde risico’s een opmars maken binnen ketens. Niet elke ketenorganisatie beschikt echter over de middelen en kennis om zichzelf te beschermen: om tot sterke ketens te komen is informatiedeling tussen ketenorganisaties over actuele dreigingen en incidenten van belang. Een doel van dit verkennend onderzoek, dat is uitgevoerd in opdracht van het Nationaal Cyber Security Centrum (NCSC), is om inzicht te bieden in de succesfactoren van informatiedeling-initiatieven op het gebied van cyberveiligheid. Met deze kennis kan het NCSC haar accounthouders en adviseurs helpen om de doelgroepen positief te motiveren om actie te nemen ter versterking van ketenweerbaarheid. Tevens wordt met dit onderzoek beoogd om aanknopingspunten voor vervolgonderzoek te identificeren. Het identificeren van succesfactoren vond plaats op basis van een literatuurstudie en gestructureerde interviews met in totaal zes leden uit drie verschillende bestaande informatiedeling-initiatieven rondom cybersecurity: het Managed Service Provider (MSP) Information Sharing and Analysis Centre (ISAC), Energie ISAC en de securitycommissie van de Nederlandse Energie- Data Uitwisseling (NEDU). Alle respondenten zijn informatiebeveiligingsexperts die hun organisatie vertegenwoordigen in de samenwerkingsverbanden. In totaal zijn 20 succesfactoren geïdentificeerd. Deze factoren zijn vervolgens gecategoriseerd tot vier thema’s die bijdragen aan een succesvolle informatiedeling. De thema’s zijn samen te vatten als teamfactoren, individuele factoren, managementfactoren en faciliterende factoren. De vier meest genoemde succesfactoren zijn: ● Expertise: Leden met onderscheidende en gespecialiseerde kennis bevorderen de informatiedeling en zijn ondersteunend aan het individuele leerdoel van de leden. ● Vertrouwen: Vertrouwen is een essentiële voorwaarde voor de bereidheid om samen te werken en informatie te delen. Tijd is hierin een cruciale factor: tijd is nodig voor vertrouwen om te ontstaan. ● Lidmaatschapseisen: Expliciete en impliciete lidmaatschapseisen zorgen voor een selectie op geschikte deelnemers en faciliteren daarmee het onderling vertrouwen. ● Structurele opzet: Een samenwerking dient georganiseerd te zijn volgens een structuur en met een stabiele bezetting van voldoende omvang. Vervolgonderzoek zou zich kunnen richten op het identificeren van strategieën voor het opstarten van samenwerkingsverbanden en het over de tijd behouden van enthousiasme onder de leden in de informatiedeling-initiatieven rondom cybersecurity. Ook onderzoek naar de eigenschappen of kwaliteiten van de voorzitter en hoe deze bijdragen aan het succesvol initiëren en onderhouden van een samenwerkingsverband zijn genoemd. Ook is nog onvoldoende duidelijk hoe gedeelde of juist onderscheidende expertise van de leden bijdraagt aan succes van de informatiedeling-initiatieven. Verder is er behoefte aan kennis over hoe de samenwerking tussen ketenpartners op het gebied van cyberveiligheid buiten bestaande samenwerkingsverbanden is ingericht. Denk hierbij aan een uitbreiding van de huidige studie, maar met een focus op kleinere bedrijven die deel uitmaken van ketens, maar waarbij IT niet de corebusiness is, aangezien die volgens respondenten als risicovol worden gezien voor de keten.

The principal aim of this study is to explore the relations between work domains and the work-related learning of workers. The article is intended to provide insight into the learning experiences of Dutch police officers during the course of their daily work. Interviews regarding actual learning events and subsequent changes in knowledge, skills or attitudes were conducted with police officers from different parts of the country and in different stages of their careers. Interpretative analyses grounded in the notion of intentionality and developmental relatedness revealed how and in what kinds of work domains police officers appear to learn. HOMALS analysis showed work-related learning activities to vary with different kinds of work domains. The implications for training and development involve the role of colleagues in different hierarchical positions for learning and they also concern the utility of the conceptualisation of work-related learning presented here.

Dit boek is een liber amicorum, een vriendenboek, in het kader van het afscheid van Madelon de Beus van Aeres Hogeschool Wageningen. Zij is bijna twintig jaar directeur geweest van deze faculteit en haar rechtsvoorgangers: Stoas Hogeschool, Stoas Hogeschool Wageningen, faculteitsdirecteur Vilentum Hogeschool Wageningen, en ten slotte Aeres Hogeschool Wageningen de Educatieve faculteit. In lijn met haar gedachten en intenties staat in dit vriendenboek de Educatieve faculteit in Wageningen op de voorgrond. Niet door terug te kijken maar, geheel in de geest van Madelon, vooruit te kijken. Docenten, studenten, administratieve en facilitaire ondersteuners, lectoren, docentonderzoekers, teamleiders: 39 ‘auteurs’ zijn in kleine groepjes in gesprek gegaan over wat zich in de buitenwereld en binnen Aeres Hogeschool Wageningen voordoet. Vanuit ieders perspectief, soms ook vanuit een historisch uitstapje, zijn in een vorm van collectief leren ideeën gevormd. Ideeën wat deze ontwikkelingen betekenen voor allerlei facetten van de Aeres Hogeschool Wageningen. Zoals het curriculum, het gebouw, de opleidingsprofielen, de didactiek, de ondernemende houding, bij- en nascholing, de onderzoekscultuur, de onderzoekende innovator en professioneel leiderschap. Veel van de ‘auteursgroepjes’ vonden het zo inspirerend dat ze zich hebben voorgenomen de gesprekken voort te zetten. Voor u als lezer geeft het boek op inspirerende wijze een inkijk in hoe de betrokkenen binnen de faculteit tegen toekomstige uitdagingen aankijken vanuit hun dagelijkse zorg om blijvend goed onderwijs, onderzoek en dienstverlening te bewerkstelligen. De auteurs wensen u veel leesplezier.

There has probably never been such an intense debate about the layout of the countryside as the one that is currently raging. There are serious concerns about the landscape, which is being rapidly transformed by urbanization and everything associated with this process, and not only in the Netherlands but also far beyond its borders. Everyone has something to say in this society-wide debate, from local to national governments, from environmental factions to the road-user's lobby, and from those who are professionally involved to concerned private parties. In many cases it is a battle between idealized images and economic models, between agricultural reality and urban park landscapes, between ecological concerns and mobility. This issue of OASE explores the potential significance of architectonic design for transformation processes on the regional scale. Besides considering the instruments that are available to the designer to fulfil this task, the authors also consider how the design can exercise a 'positive' influence on such processes. The various contributions shed light on the potential significance of territory in contemporary design practice and offer critical reflection on the topical discourse that has evolved over recent years.

Health symptoms may be influenced, supported, or even controlled via a lighting control system which includes personal lighting conditions and personal factors (health characteristics). In order to be effective, this lighting control system requires both continuous information on the lighting and health conditions at the individual level. A new practical method to determine these continuous personal lighting conditions has been developed: location-bound estimations (LBE). This method was validated in the field in two case studies; comparisons were made between the LBE and location-bound measurements (LBM) in case study 1 and between the LBE and person-bound measurements (PBM) in case study 2. Overall, the relative deviation between the LBE and LBM was less than 15%, whereas the relative deviation between the LBE and PBM was 32.9% in the best-case situation. The relative deviation depends on inaccuracies in both methods (i.e., LBE and PBM) and needs further research. Adding more input parameters to the predictive model (LBE) will improve the accuracy of the LBE. The proposed first approach of the LBE is not without limitations; however, it is expected that this practical method will be a pragmatic approach of inserting personal lighting conditions into lighting control systems.
