PurposeThis study explores how and when intuitive forms of planning can be used in a family firm's succession process.Design/methodology/approachThe study uses an extended focus group meeting, consisting of individual, group and subgroup discussions with seven highly experienced external family business advisors in the Netherlands to gain a holistic understanding of the succession process and its underlying logic. The study also employs pre- and post-group questionnaires.FindingsThis study reveals that advisors perceive intuitive forms of planning as an integral part of the succession process, with the latter containing both intuitive and formal logic and activities. Both logics are used situationally and flexibly to deal with the uniqueness and unpredictability of the succession process and to build strong relations and manage relational dynamics in business families to address tasks, dilemmas and contingencies.Originality/valueThe succession process is an important part of business families' achievement of transgenerational intent. Creating commitment among potential successors begins when they are children, and understanding the role of the more intuitive forms of planning during the succession process will provide us with a more holistic perspective on its dynamics.

INAUGURAL LECTURE The world is in disarray. Species are extinct, climates are changing, we are becoming unhealthier.To liberate ourselves from this doom scenario we need to take care of ourselves and our environment. The solutions of former generations offer no future solace. Moreover, these caused the current problems. Instead of exploiting our environment for energy, resources and capacity we need to increase the potential for the recuperation of the environment, the planet and our minds. Instead of taking, giving!The reciprocity of the urbanized land we live in should be our main objective. The professorship Spatial Transformations - Sustainability will therefore design and plan for our physical and mentalcity and surroundings. This way the city becomes a purification machine for polluted water and acts as a net carbon sink. The city becomes a source of biodiversity, transformed into an urban nature reserve. Food will be produced that extends our lives. And wouldn’t it be nice to see the city as a place for contemplation so our mental abilities can grow instead of vegetating in dull offices? The city should offer people a healthy life, replenish resources and be beautiful. The professorship contributes to educating a new generation finding extraordinary solutions for current problems. With creativity, initiative and a healthy dose of disobedience this must work!

Dit magazine is een uitgave van Expertise Netwerk Systemisch Co-design, een samenwerking tussen Hogeschool Inholland, Hogeschool Utrecht, Haagse Hogeschool, Hogeschool Rotterdam en partners vanuit creatieve industrie en maatschappelijk domein. Het netwerk wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door een SPRONG subsidie vanuit Regieorgaan SIA. Samen op weg Daar staan we dan, een jaar na de start van ESC. De infrastructuur staat, het team is compleet, we leren al doende van elkaar, netwerkevents en projecten staan op stapel en we geven een doorkijkje naar de toekomst. Trots zijn we op de activiteiten die we als netwerk al hebben kunnen ontplooien. Van gezamenlijke subsidieaanvragen, projecten tot inspirerende uitwisselingen in de praktijk. We zagen elkaar op de DDW en bij de hogescholen in het kader van onderzoek en onderwijs tot en met het ontdekken van potentiële nieuwe werkveldpartners en het breder betrekken van onderzoekers en koploperlectoren in onze eigen instellingen. Ook zijn lectoren en onderzoekers doorlopend bij elkaar gekomen om in co-design toe te werken naar eerste principes passend bij een prototype framework van systemisch co-design en een overzicht van tools. Hiermee is een eerste basis gecreëerd die helpt om samen beter experimenten, interventies en projecten op te zetten in zowel onderzoek als binnen de hybride leeromgevingen.
