This is the editorial paper for the virtual special issue “Using Q methodology in higher education: Opportunities and challenges”, consisting of nine original research studies from different international contexts. In addition to presenting novel findings, contributors were invited to discuss the following two questions at the center of the special issue call: In what sense has Q methodology served as a fitting approach to investigate subjectivity in higher education? What methodological opportunities and challenges arise with Q methodology in higher education settings? This editorial provides an overview and discussion of the various justifications mentioned for Q methodology. Furthermore, it collates the opportunities and challenges contributors discuss in relation to their studies using this almost 90-year-old methodological approach. The editorial paper concludes with recommendations for future Q methodological studies in higher education and beyond.

“Ik heb een goed artikel gelezen over cultuur, maar eigenlijk komt het erop neer dat culturen niet zijn te veranderen. Wil jij het ook eens lezen?” Er is een lichte verwildering te bespeuren achter de ogenschijnlijke rust waarmee deze woorden worden uitgesproken. De manager die dit zegt, is de trekker van een omvangrijke cultuurverandering waarbij meerdere bedrijven binnen de bouwbranche zijn betrokken. Hij trekt een kopie van het artikel uit zijn tas. Het is een goed doortimmerd verhaal, waarin de vloer wordt aangeveegd met mensen die denken dat culturen zijn te veranderen. Cultuurverandering wordt hierin gelijkgesteld aan een paradigmaverschuiving. Paradigma’s worden gekoppeld aan onze Europese geschiedenis en zijn daarmee diep geworteld en gaan generaties mee. Hoe kun je dan denken, is de conclusie van het artikel, dat je met een aantal sessies, opleidingen of andere interventies hierin ook maar een millimeter kunt opschuiven?

Een consortium van Europese organisaties wil hierbij helpen met het project SMILES, een nieuwe lesmethode waarbij docenten en bibliotheekprofessionals samenwerken om de mediawijsheid van leerlingen tussen de 12 en 15 jaar te vergroten. In de drukte en hectiek van het werk lukt het vaak niet om stil te staan, te vertragen en te kijken naar ons handelen. Zo komen we niet op een diepere laag en kunnen we de vragen wat, hoe en waartoe niet voldoende stellen. Hoe komt dat? Volstaan de huidige reflectiemethoden niet, is tijdsdruk een issue, gaat het over het ervaren van veiligheid, of is het toch de angst om gezien te worden? In May 2007, our Centre for Research in Intellectual Capital hosted the International Congress on Intellectual Capital: The future of business navigation. The Congress – which took place in Haarlem, The Netherlands – was attended by more than 140 participants from 23 countries. Based on almost 70 papers, we designed a conference program that consisted of more than 90 sessions. This special issue is based on a selection of the best papers of our conference.
