The current study employs the leisure motivation scale to examine motivations of non-Buddhists visiting Buddhist temples. Specifically, this investigation builds on tourism literature to explore the motivations of non-Buddhists visiting Buddhist temples in Los Angeles, California. Motivations to Buddhist temples are of particular interest given the increasing popularity in the West of Eastern spiritual activities, such as yoga and meditation, as well as the exponential growth of Buddhist-themed tourism campaigns. The findings provide insights for tourism officials responsible for promoting ways to attract tourists to Buddhist temples within their respective destinations.

Unhealthy eating behaviors and low levels of physical activity are major problems in adolescents and young adults in vocational education. To develop effective intervention programs, more research is needed to understand how different types of motivation contribute to health behaviors. In the present study, Self-Determination Theory is used to examine how motivation contributes to dietary and physical activity behaviors in vocational students. This cross-sectional study included 809 students (mean age 17.8 ± 1.9 years) attending vocational education in the Netherlands. Linear multilevel regression analyses were used to investigate the association between types of motivation and dietary and physical activity behaviors. Amotivation was negatively associated with breakfast frequency and positively associated with diet soda consumption and high-calorie between-meal snacks. A positive association was found between autonomous motivation and water intake, breakfast frequency, fruit intake, and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity. Autonomous motivation was negatively associated with the consumption of unhealthy products. Controlled motivation was not associated with physical activity or dietary behaviors. Different types of motivation seem to explain either healthy or unhealthy dietary behaviors in vocational students. Autonomous motivation, in particular, was shown to be associated with healthy behaviors and could therefore be a valuable intervention target.

Abstract: Experiences are becoming increasingly important in events and festivals, which are prime manifestations of the experience economy. This article develops an Event Experience Scale (EES) for event experiences. In this exploratory study the item generation and selection for this scale are presented in three phases: specifying the domain of construct and generation of items, item selection, and scale purification. An 18-item scale, comprising four dimensions – affective engagement, cognitive engagement, physical engagement, and experiencing newness – with satisfactory values for Cronbach's alphas (.83,.86,.86, and.87), emerged. Implications for theoretical and practical research are discussed.

The purpose of this study was to provide more insight into how the physical education (PE) context can be better tailored to the diverse motivational demands of secondary school students. Therefore, we examined how different constructs of student motivation in the context of PE combine into distinct motivational profiles, aiming to unveil motivational similarities and differences between students’ PE experiences. Participants were 2,562 Dutch secondary school students, aged 12–18, from 24 different schools. Students responded to questionnaires assessing their perception of psychological need satisfaction and frustration, and perceived mastery and performance climate in PE. In order to interpret the emerging profiles additional variables were assessed (i.e. demographic, motivational and PE-related variables). Two-step cluster analysis identified three meaningful profiles labelled as negative perceivers, moderate perceivers and positive perceivers. These three profiles differed significantly with regard to perceived psychological need satisfaction and frustration and their perception of the motivational climate. This study demonstrates that students can be grouped in distinct profiles based on their perceptions of the motivational PE environment. Consequently, the insights obtained could assist PE teachers in designing instructional strategies that target students’ differential motivational needs.

Given the complexity of teaching, continuing teacher professional development (CPD) is essential for maintaining and enhancing teaching effectiveness, and bridging the gap between ever-evolving theory and practice. Technological advancements have opened new opportunities for digital tools to support CPD. However, the successful integration of such digital tools into practice poses challenges. It requires adherence to CPD prerequisites and acknowledgment of the complexity of the professional development process. This study explored the applicability of the developed digital PE teacher professional development TARGET-tool in a secondary school PE context. We examined the perceived usability of this tool and gained insights into the process of teachers’ professional development as a result of using the tool. Ten PE teachers from different schools implemented the TARGET- tool within their PE context for a period of 4 to 6 weeks. Individual semi-structured inter- views and the System Usability Scale provided insights into the perceived usability and the process of teacher professional development. The TARGET-tool demonstrated its potential as an effective tool for supporting teachers’ professional development. Future tool improve- ments were identified to further optimize the perceived usability, such as simplifying com- plex features, providing additional support and resources, and improving (data) presenta- tions. Using the Interconnected Model of Professional Growth as a theoretical basis, it was demonstrated how the use of the TARGET-tool engages teachers as active and reflective participants in their professional development and induces changes within the external domain, the domain of practice, the domain of consequences, and the personal domain.

As the two prime examples of sport light, running and walking have become very popular sports activities in the past decades. There are references in the literature of similarities between both sports, however these parallels have never been studied. In addition, the current digitalisation of society can have important influences on the further diversification of profiles. Data of a large-scale population survey among runners and walkers (n = 4913) in Flanders (Belgium) were used to study their sociodemographic, sports related and attitudinal characteristics, and wearable usage. The results showed that walkers are more often female, older, lower educated, and less often use wearables. To predict wearable usage, sports-related and attitudinal characteristics are important among runners but not among walkers. Motivational variables to use wearables are important to predict wearable usage among both runners and walkers. Additionally, whether or not the runner or walker registers the heart rate is the most important predictor. The present study highlights similarities and differences between runners and walkers. By adding attitudinal characteristics and including walkers this article provides new insights to the literature, which can be used by policymakers and professionals in the field of sport, exercise and health, and technology developers to shape their services accordingly.

Non-professional runners make extensive use of consumer-available wearable devices and smartphone apps to monitor training sessions, health, and physical performance. Despite the popularity of these products, they usually neglect subjective factors, such as psychosocial stress, unexpected daily physical (in)activity, sleep quality perception, and/or previous injuries. Consequently, the implementation of these products may lead to underperformance, reduced motivation, and running-related injuries. This paper investigates how the integration of subjective training, off-training, and contextual factors from a 24/7 perspective might lead to better individual screening and health protection methods for recreational runners. Using an online-based Ecological Momentary Assessment survey, a seven-day cohort study was conducted. Twenty participants answered daily surveys three times a day regarding subjective off-training and contextual data; e.g., health, sleep, stress, training, environment, physiology, and lifestyle factors. The results show that daily habits of people are unstructured, unlikely predictable, and influenced by factors, such as the demands of work, social life, leisure time, or sleep. By merging these factors with sensor-based data, running-related systems would be able to better assess the individual workload of recreational runners and support them to reduce their risk of suffering from running-related injuries

Toenemende prevalentie van overgewicht en obesitas onder jeugd wordt, in ieder geval ten dele, veroorzaakt door te weinig fysieke activiteit. Omdat ieder kind een groot deel van zijn of haar jeugdige leven op school doorbrengt kunnen scholen een centrale rol spelen in het tegengaan van deze bewegingsarmoede. Het meest voor de hand liggende schoolvak lijkt hierbij de lichamelijke opvoeding1 (LO) te zijn. De belangrijkste doelstelling van het schoolvak LO is immers om leerlingen dusdanig te motiveren en enthousiast te maken voor sport en bewegen zodat dit uiteindelijk resulteert in een actieve leefstijl, zowel buiten school als in het verdere leven. Daarnaast is LO tevens het enige verplichte schoolvak waar fysieke activiteit een centrale plek inneemt; de les zelf is in potentie ook een structurele bron van fysieke activiteit. Globaal gezien kan LO dus op een indirecte en een directe manier bijdragen aan de fysieke activiteit van leerlingen, een tweedeling die werd geïntroduceerd in hoofdstuk 1. Waar echter tot op heden onduidelijkheid over bestaat, zeker wat betreft de Nederlandse situatie, is hoe groot de bijdrage van de LO aan dagelijkse fysieke activiteit feitelijk is. De vraag die daarom centraal staat in dit proefschrift is in hoeverre het vak LO, zoals dat op dit moment gegeven wordt op basis- en voortgezet onderwijs, een bijdrage levert aan de fysieke activiteit van kinderen en adolescenten, zowel direct (de les als bron van fysieke activiteit), als indirect (motivatie voor een actieve leefstijl). Voor de beantwoording van deze vraag zijn een aantal studies uitgevoerd. Allereerst is in hoofdstuk 2 door middel van een literatuurstudie onderzocht in hoeverre interventies met een LO-component effectief zijn in het stimuleren van fysieke activiteit. Hieruit blijkt dat er alleen overtuigend bewijs bestaat voor een directe bijdrage van de les LO aan de fysieke activiteit van kinderen en adolescenten. Oftewel, in de les LO zelf wordt er matig-tot-intensief bewogen. De effecten van interventies met een LO component op de fysieke activiteit buiten school of in het latere leven zijn minder overtuigend of zelfs afwezig. In hoofdstuk 3 wordt een cross-sectionele studie beschreven waarin middels het combineren van gegevens vanuit een hartslag-versnellingsmeter met de gegevens uit een activiteitendagboek voor het eerst inzicht verkregen wordt in de daadwerkelijke bijdrage van een reguliere les LO (naast andere fysieke activiteiten zoals fietsen) aan de totale dagelijkse fysieke activiteit van middelbare scholieren. De resultaten wijzen uit dat 17% van de totale hoeveelheid beweging onder schooltijd zijn oorsprong vindt in de lessen LO en dat op dagen dat een leerling een les LO heeft, deze les verantwoordelijk is voor ongeveer 30% van de totale fysieke activiteit op die dag. Opvallend is daarnaast dat 15% van de totale fysieke activiteit op een weekdag zijn oorsprong vindt in het actief transport naar school, voornamelijk fietsen. Hoofdstuk 4 beschrijft een studie waarin de focus ligt op de intensiteit van lessen LO in het voortgezet onderwijs (VO) en het basisonderwijs (BO). Tevens is gekeken naar factoren die de intensiteit van een les beïnvloeden. De resultaten wijzen uit dat 47% en 40% van een les LO op respectievelijk het VO en het BO voldoet aan de intensiteit van bewegen zoals omschreven in de Nederlandse Norm voor Gezond Bewegen (matig-tot-intensief fysiek actief). Dit komt overeen met ongeveer een derde van de dagelijks aanbevolen hoeveelheid beweging voor deze doelgroep. Opvallend is dat op het VO jongens significant actiever zijn tijdens de lessen LO dan meisjes. Dit verschil blijkt zijn oorsprong te hebben in lessen waarin competitieve spelvormen (basketbal, voetbal etc.) centraal staan. Mogelijkerwijs verhindert de dominantie van jongens tijdens spelvormen dat meisjes in een les even actief kunnen zijn als jongens. Dit is een serieuze beperking van de mate waarin een les LO kan bijdragen aan het totale beweeggedrag van meisjes, gezien het feit dat ongeveer 60% van het Nederlandse LO curriculum uit (veelal competitieve) spelvormen bestaat.

Injuries and lack of motivation are common reasons for discontinuation of running. Real-time feedback from wearables can reduce discontinuation by reducing injury risk and improving performance and motivation. There are however several limitations and challenges with current real-time feedback approaches. We discuss these limitations and challenges and provide a framework to optimise real-time feedback for reducing injury risk and improving performance and motivation. We first discuss the reasons why individuals run and propose that feedback targeted to these reasons can improve motivation and compliance. Secondly, we review the association of running technique and running workload with injuries and performance and we elaborate how real-time feedback on running technique and workload can be applied to reduce injury risk and improve performance and motivation. We also review different feedback modalities and motor learning feedback strategies and their application to real-time feedback. Briefly, the most effective feedback modality and frequency differ between variables and individuals, but a combination of modalities and mixture of real-time and delayed feedback is most effective. Moreover, feedback promoting perceived competence, autonomy and an external focus can improve motivation, learning and performance. Although the focus is on wearables, the challenges and practical applications are also relevant for laboratory-based gait retraining.
