In this dissertation, the author describes the development of a practice called Relational Coaching for Management Consultants. This practice has been developed as a resource for management consultants who seek to ‘take a look in the mirror’ with regard to their facilitating role in complex organizational change processes. The author’s ultimate aim is to contribute to decreasing the infamous number of 70% of organizational change initiatives that fail to deliver the expected results.

Today, Intellectual Capital plays a principal role in the delivery of corporate performance. This importance is reflected in the fact that companies, without the force of any regulations, start to produce intellectual capital statements to communicate their performance; accounting guidelines are being developed and standards are being questioned and reviewed; software companies such as SAP, Hyperion, Oracle, or Peoplesoft are developing applications to address this, and even governments are beginning to measure the intellectual capital of cities, regions, and countries. Accenture writes that today's economy depends on the ability of companies to create, capture, and leverage intellectual capital faster than the competition. Cap Gemini Ernst & Young believes that intangibles are the key drivers for competitive advantage. KPMG states that most general business risks derive from intangibles and organizations therefore need to manage their intangibles very carefully. PricewaterhouseCoopers writes that in a globalized world, the intellectual capital in any organization becomes essential and its correct distribution at all organizational levels requires the best strategy integrated solutions, processes and technology. Even though the leading management consulting firms recognize the importance of intellectual capital – they seem to suffer from the same predicament as the field as a whole. Intellectual capital is defined differently and the concept is often fuzzy. In this special issue of the leading journal in the field we would like to bring together the definitions, approaches, and tools offered by the leading management consulting firms. The main question in this PhD thesis is: How can Business Rules Management be configured and valued in organizations? A BRM problem space framework is proposed, existing of service systems, as a solution to the BRM problems. In total 94 vendor documents and approximately 32 hours of semi-structured interviews were analyzed. This analysis revealed nine individual service systems, in casu elicitation, design, verification, validation, deployment, execution, monitor, audit, and version. In the second part of this dissertation, BRM is positioned in relation to BPM (Business Process Management) by means of a literature study. An extension study was conducted: a qualitative study on a list of business rules formulated by a consulting organization based on the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission risk framework. Energiebeheer gericht aanpakken, Het analyseren van doelstellingen, resultaten en impacts van energie- en broeikasgasbeheersprogramma’s in bedrijven (met een samenvatting in het Nederlands): De wereldwijde uitstoot van broeikasgassen moet drastisch worden teruggebracht om de mondiale stijging van de temperatuur tot het relatief veilige niveau van maximaal 2 graden Celsius te beperken. In de komende decennia zal de verbetering van de energie-efficiëntie de belangrijkste strategie zijn voor het verminderen van de energiegerelateerde uitstoot van broeikasgassen. Hoewel er een enorm potentieel is voor verbetering van de energie-efficiëntie, wordt een groot deel daarvan nog niet benut. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door diverse investeringsbarrières die de invoering van maatregelen voor energie-efficiëntie verbetering verhinderen. De invoering van energiemanagement wordt vaak beschouwd als een manier om dergelijke barrières voor energiebesparing te overwinnen. De invoering van energiemanagement in bedrijven kan worden gestimuleerd door de introductie van programma's voor energie-efficiëntie verbetering en vermindering van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen. Deze programma's zijn vaak een combinatie van verschillende elementen zoals verplichtingen voor energiemanagement; (ambitieuze) doelstellingen voor energiebesparing of beperking van de uitstoot van broeikasgassen; de beschikbaarheid van regelingen voor stimulering, ondersteuning en naleving; en andere verplichtingen, zoals openbare rapportages, certificering en verificatie. De markt voor Business Process Management (BPM) software groeit razend snel. Voor 2010 wordt er een marktomvang voorspeld van tussen de 1 tot 6 miljard dollar, dit betekend dat deze markt sinds 2005 meer dan verdubbeld is. BPM krijgt ook in toenemende mate publiciteit in de markt echter dan gaat het veelal om wat BPM nu precies wel en niet is en niet over hoe het toegepast kan worden. Hetzelfde geldt voor BPM software, beter bekend als Business Process Management Systemen (BPMS). Het onderzoek beschreven in dit proefschrift focust op BPMS, het ontstaan, waar het naartoe gaat en wat er allemaal komt kijken bij de invoering en het gebruik ervan. De hoofdonderzoeksvraag in dit proefschrift is: Welke factoren en competenties bepalen het succes van de implementatie van Business Process Management Systemen in een specifieke situatie? Centraal in dit proefschrift staan de volgende onderzoeksvragen: 1. Wat zijn de succes factoren bij de implementatie van Business Process Management Systemen? 2. Welke competenties hebben stakeholders in een Business Process Management Systeem implementatie project nodig? 3. Business Process Management Systems (BPMSs) are increasingly implemented in and across organizations. There is much talk on BPMSs, and software vendors and IT-consultancy companies are leveraging this. In this paper we provide an investigation on the originality of BPMSs. We identify concepts, features and characteristics of such systems, and trace them back to business and IT concepts from the past, like Business Process Reengineering (BPR), Total Quality Management (TQM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and Workflow Management (WFM) systems. We conclude that much of what BPMSs entail comes from earlier business and IT innovations. However, the combination of functionality, concepts and characteristics in BPMSs make new applications in IT possible. We end our paper with a research agenda for BPMSs.

Introduction: Self-management is considered a potential answer to the increasing demand for family medicine by people suffering from a chronic condition or multi-morbidity. A key element of self-management is goal setting. Goal setting is often defined as a moment of agreement between a professional and a patient. In the self-management literature, however, goal setting is regarded as a circular process. Still, it is unclear how professionals working in family medicine can put it into practice. This background paper aims to contribute to the understanding of goal setting within self-management and to identify elements that need further development for practical use. Debate: Four questions for debate emerge in this article: (1) What are self-management goals? (2) What is necessary to accomplish the process of goal setting within self-management? (3) How can professionals decide on the degree of support needed for goal setting within self-management? (4) How can patients set their goals and how can they be supported? Implications: Self-management goals can be set for different (life) domains. Using a holistic framework will help in creating an overview of patients’ goals that do not merely focus on medical issues. It is a challenge for professionals to coach their patients to think about and set their goals themselves. More insight in patients’ willingness and ability to set self-management goals is desirable. Moreover, as goal setting is a circular process, professionals need to be supported to go through this process with their patients.

The global tourism industry witnesses significant challenges and changes when it comes to sustainability, changing consumer preferences and ICT developments. Against this backdrop, tourism businesses need to innovate in order to stay relevant for their markets and stakeholders. Critical tourism professionals with strong analytical skills can initiate and guide these processes of innovation in the future, and reach beyond existing blueprints and organizational frameworks. This is the idea behind Sustainability in Tourism—The Corporate Perspective (SUSCOR), a 6-week, English taught, intensive specialization course that explores how sustainable business practices can create (social) returns on investment. SUSCOR is built around a real-life consultancy assignment for a work field commissioner. Students work in international project teams to assess the client’s CSR activities in order to identify strategic improvements, design a business case, present this business case to the board of directors at the client’s head office, and conclude with a final consultancy report. SUSCOR offers students a platform to practice and develop their problem solving and consultancy skills while simultaneously getting a reality check about their future professional field. As the assignment is embedded in a series of lectures and workshops about contemporary theories about sustainable development, social responsibility and business innovation, SUSCOR links academic knowledge to the reality of today’s professional field. This chapter presents the concept and design of the course, illustrates the course week by week, and provides a number of concluding remarks and recommendations that aim to guide the further development of this type of teaching activity.
