Een holistisch perspectief op binnenstedelijke herontwikkeling Spatial Planning http://www.uu.nl/agenda/promotie-een-holistisch-perspectief-op-binnenstedelijke-herontwikkeling Promovendus Rien van Stigt onderzoekt waarom het moeilijk is om milieukwaliteit een prominente plaats te geven in de besluitvorming over ruimtelijke plannen. In zijn proefschrift ontwikkelt hij een holistisch perspectief op het complexe proces van compacte binnenstedelijke herontwikkeling. De kwaliteit van de stedelijke leefomgeving is essentieel in duurzame stedelijke ontwikkeling. Die kwaliteit staat met name bij compacte binnenstedelijke herontwikkeling onder druk, en daarom is milieukwaliteit een belangrijke factor in het plannen van zulke ontwikkelingen. Uit de literatuur over de integratie van milieubeleid blijkt dat dit, vooral op lagere bestuurlijke niveaus, niet altijd goed lukt. Er is nog geen overtuigende verklaring waarom dit zo is. De focus van dit hoofdstuk ligt op een aantal gekozen en nodige transities van duurzame mobiliteit binnen de gegeven infrastructuur, beschikbare middelen en de openbare ruimte in een stedelijke setting. Kortom: op weg naar een modal shift in de verdichtende stad. De komende jaren vindt het een transitie plaats naar nieuwe vervoersvormen die minder energie vragen, minder ruimtegebruik kennen, meer flexibiliteit brengen en lagere gebruikskosten met zich meebrengen. Met als belangrijke uitdagingen de vernieuwing in het openbaar vervoer (hierna OV) en actieve transport (lopen of fietsen) in de schaarse buitenruimte. De inzet op duurzame mobiliteit zorgt voor meer ontmoetingen, toegankelijke, leefbare en aantrekkelijke steden. Die toekomstige stedelijke mobiliteit is een slim samenhangend geheel van aanbod van systemen als OV, fiets, auto, stalling, overstap en energie. De menselijke maat en vervoersvraag staan daarbij centraal. Nabijheid is voor duurzame mobiliteit cruciaal en stedelijk en economisch principe van collision density is daarin een uitdaging. This article focuses on engagements with elephants in diverse contexts, inquiring why some scholars are indifferent or even actively opposed to discourses that emphasise elephant suffering. Welke verschillende rollen speelt de burger in de transitie naar een duurzamer en gezonder voedselsysteem? Dat is de centrale vraag van deze publicatie, voortkomend uit het onderzoek van de promovendi van het lectoraat Voedsel en Gezond Leven aan Aeres Hogeschool Almere, in samenwerking met masterstudenten en andere onderzoekers. Met deze publicatie geven de promovendi je graag een inkijkje in de laatste ontwikkelingen en de diverse kanten van Almere.

Steeds meer bedrijven publiceren naast hun financieel jaarverslag een integrated report, waarin naast financiële waarde ook over maatschappelijke waarden wordt gerapporteerd. Uit een rapport van KPMG (2017) blijkt dat 93% van de grootste bedrijven van de wereld een integrated report publiceert. Met de opkomst van integrated reporting is hier echter ook de nodige kritiek op ontstaan. Zo zouden bedrijven het integrated report vooral gebruiken om zich duurzamer voor te doen dan ze daadwerkelijk zijn (‘greenwashing’). In dit artikel wordt een analyse van de Triple Depreciation Line (TDL) beschreven. De TDL is een raamwerk, waarmee in potentie (voor een deel) tegemoet wordt gekomen aan de huidige kritiek op integrated reporting zoals bijvoorbeeld ‘greenwashing’. In dit artikel concluderen wij dat de TDL in zijn huidige opzet in de praktijk moeilijk toepasbaar is en doen wij aanbevelingen voor een meer praktische toepassing van dit raamwerk. Dit leidt tot een aangepast TDL-raamwerk, waarbij wij beargumenteren dat de toepassing van dit aangepaste raamwerk de potentie heeft om de transitie naar een duurzame economie aanzienlijk te versnellen.

The primary purpose of this chapter is to provide insights into the body of scholarly literature on the question of magazines and sustainability—in both production and editorial content. This chapter will also discuss production-side issues for business decision-making and policy, as well as editorial-side, within publishing organizations. Drawing on recent literature on the environmental impact of both information and communication technologies, with the Internet on the one hand and digitalization of media on the other, this chapter will identify a number of important effects of new magazine production and issues of sustainability with a primary focus on reviewing the emerging body of scholarly literature that relates to the question. The sociological and anthropological literature will be examined and Cradle to Cradle (C2C) theory will be introduced, in order to lead to the discussion of research arising from these perspectives as well as methods being used to explore these questions. In human-controlled environments and in cultivated landscapes, the plants accommodate social, cultural and economic needs. This article will focus on the use of plants for agriculture, urban planning, forestry, environmental education and indoor decoration in The Netherlands. This exploration, based on literature review and observations, reveals mostly anthropocentric, instrumental and unsustainable practices. In urban landscapes, plants are pushed to the margins, if not entirely eradicated. This article shows that the moral recognition of plants is an ethical imperative, which is also critically important in order to achieve environmental sustainability. In line with ecocentric ethics and in the interest of long-term sustainability, this article suggests an alternative, more ethical and sustainable ways of relating to plants in The Netherlands and beyond. This chapter will introduce the circular economy (CE) and Cradle to Cradle (C2C) models of sustainable production. It will reflect on the key blockages to a meaningful sustainable production and how these could be overcome, particularly in the context of business education. The case study of the course for bachelor’s students within International Business Management Studies (IBMS), and at University College in The Netherlands will be discussed. These case studies will illustrate the opportunities as well as potential pitfalls of the closed loop production models. The results of case studies’ analysis show that there was a mismatch between expectations of the sponsor companies and those of students on the one hand and a mismatch between theory and practice on the other hand.
