This paper aims to quantify the cumulative damage of unreinforced masonry (URM) subjected to induced seismicity. A numerical model based on discrete element method (DEM) has been develop and was able to represented masonry wall panels with and without openings; which are common typologies of domestic houses in the Groningen gas field in the Netherlands. Within DEM, masonry units were represented as a series of discrete blocks bonded together with zero-thickness interfaces, representing mortar, which can open and close according to the stresses applied on them. Initially, the numerical model has been validated against the experimental data reported in the literature. It was assumed that the bricks would exhibit linear stress-strain behaviour and that opening and slip along the mortar joints would be the predominant failure mechanism. Then, accumulated damage within the seismic response of the masonry walls investigated by means of harmonic load excitations representative of the acceleration time histories recorded during induced seismicity events that occurred in Groningen, the Netherlands.
The aim of this constructive study was to develop model-based principles to provide guidance to managers and policy makers when making decisions about team size and composition in the context of home healthcare. Six model-based principles were developed based on extensive data analysis and in close interaction with practice. In particular, the principles involve insights in capacity planning, travel time, available effective capacity, contract types, and team manageability. The principles are formalized in terms of elementary mathematical models that capture the essence of decision-making. Numerical results based on real-life scenarios reveal that efficiency improves with team size, albeit more prominently for smaller teams due to diminishing returns. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the complexity of managing and coordinating a team becomes increasingly more difficult as team size grows. An estimate for travel time is provided given the size and territory of a team, as well as an upper bound for the fraction of full-time contracts, if split shifts are to be avoided. Overall, it can be concluded that an ideally sized team should serve (at least) around a few hundreds care hours per week.
Laminated composites have important applications in modern aeronautical structures due to their extraordinary mechanical and environmental behaviour. Nevertheless, aircraft composite structures are highly vulnerable to impact damage, either by low-velocity sources during maintenance or high-velocity sources during in-flight events. Even barely visible impact damage induced by low-velocity loading, substantially reduces the residual mechanical performance and the safe-service life of the composites structures. Despite the extensive research already carried out, impact damage of laminated composite structures is still not well understood and it is an area of on-going research. Numerical modelling is considered as the most efficient tool as compared to the expensive and time-consuming experimental testing. In this paper, a finite element model based on explicit dynamics formulations is adopted. Hashin criterion is applied to predict the intra-laminar damage initiation and evolution. The numerical analysis is performed using the ABAQUS ® programme. The employed modelling approach is validated using numerical results found in the literature and the presented results show an acceptable correlation to the available literature data. It is demonstrated that the presented model is able to capture force-time response as well as damage evolution map for a range of impact energies.
Climate change adaptation has influenced river management through an anticipatory governance paradigm. As such, futures and the power of knowing the future has become increasingly influential in water management. Yet, multiple future imaginaries co-exist, where some are more dominant that others. In this PhD research, I focus on deconstructing the future making process in climate change adaptation by asking ‘What river imaginaries exist and what future imaginaries dominate climate change adaptation in riverine infrastructure projects of the Meuse and Magdalena river?’. I firstly explore existing river imaginaries in a case study of the river Meuse. Secondly, I explore imaginaries as materialised in numerical models for the Meuse and Magdalena river. Thirdly, I explore the integration and negotiation of imaginaries in participatory modelling practices in the Magdalena river. Fourthly, I explore contesting and alternative imaginaries and look at how these are mobilised in climate change adaptation for the Magdalena and Meuse river. Multiple concepts stemming from Science and Technology Studies and Political Ecology will guide me to theorise the case study findings. Finally, I reflect on my own positionality in action-research which will be an iterative process of learning and unlearning while navigating between the natural and social sciences.
A series of tests performed on as-built and strengthened timber joist-masonry-wall specimens. The test aims at providing a complete characterization of the behaviour of the timber-joist connections under axial cyclic loading. The obtained results will be used as inputs to calibrate numerical models to simulate the connection between the cavity wall and timber joist.
Stringent nitrogen oxide (NOx) regulations are crucial for minimizing environmental harm and enhancing public health. The Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) technique is an effective after-treatment method for reducing NOx emissions in combustion systems. By injecting a reagent, typically ammonia or urea, into the flue gas within a specified temperature window, SNCR facilitates the chemical reaction that converts NOx into harmless nitrogen and water. The optimal temperature range for this reaction is critical for maximizing efficiency and effectiveness. The primary advantage of the SNCR technique is its lower installation and operating costs in comparison to other after-treatment methods. The partners involved in this proposal are highly interested in implementing the SNCR method to reduce NOx emissions from heavy-duty engines. This proposal aims to develop a numerical model to evaluate the NOx reduction potential in heavy-duty engine applications using the SNCR method. The model will enable the analysis of key parameters, including the injection site temperature and the reagent-to-NOx concentration ratio, to determine their impact on NOx reduction.
