The Dutch food and agricultural market has been focusing on producing efficiently and effectively with the aim of cost minimization and profit maximizing. In addition to positive developments (higher efficiency and more effective production), this market system has created negative impact for nature, the environment and local economies. Collaboration is therefore necessary to set up local food supply chains that are sustainable economically, socially and environmentally. This research seeks optimization of business models in which trade and cooperation between food hubs and health care institutions, such as hospitals and residential care homes, thrive. This optimized business model can serve as a business model template and can contribute to strengthening the market position of local food hubs and affiliated farmers. Furthermore, hospitals can provide patients healthier, more regional and attractive diets. In order to develop and optimize the current business practices of food hubs the research aims to investigate business models and see if modifications of these business models would benefit current practices.

The age estimation of biological traces is one of the holy grails in forensic investigations. We developed a method for the age estimation of semen stains using fluorescence spectroscopy in conjunction with a stoichiometric ageing model. The model describes the degradation and generation rate of proteins and fluorescent oxidation products (FOX) over time. The previously used fluorimeter is a large benchtop device and requires system optimization for forensic applications. In situ applications have the advantage that measurements can be performed directly at the crime scene, without additional sampling or storage steps. Therefore, a portable fiber-based fluorimeter was developed, consisting of two optimized light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and two spectrometers to allow the fluorescence protein and FOX measurements. The handheld fiber can be used without touching the traces, avoiding the destruction or contamination of the trace. In this study, we have measured the ageing kinetics of semen stains over time using both our portable fluorimeter and a laboratory benchtop fluorimeter and compared their accuracies for the age estimation of semen stains. Successful age estimation was possible up to 11 days, with a mean absolute error of 1.0 days and 0.9 days for the portable and the benchtop fluorimeters, respectively. These results demonstrate the potential of using the portable fluorimeter for in situ applications.

This dissertation focuses on the ability of frail older persons, living in homes for the elderly, to stay as independent as possible. The quality of life in older adults depends for a great deal on whether they are dependent from care or not, and to what extent they are dependent. Care dependency is directly linked to ADL performance. Older people experience failure when they cannot look after themselves any longer, after a life of hard work and build up independence. From the view of a geriatric physiotherapist, optimalization of physical fitness characteristics like muscle strength, flexibility, aerobic endurance, coordination, and balance is the tool which may improve performance of activities of daily living (ADL).
