In this chapter, we propose that the democracy we wish to see out in the world is influenced by the quality of our own “inner democracies”—that is: the quality of the democracies among and between the selves or voices in the landscape of the self. We must find ways out of the I-prisons we experience and perpetuate. With this in mind, we propose that ”writing the self,” a method whereby creative, expressive, and reflective writing is used to cultivate an internal dialogue and construct a new identity narrative (Lengelle, 2014), can assist in reshaping our stories about ”the Other and ourselves” and can contribute to personal and cultural healing and reconciliation. The inner dialogue reconciled is foundational for the external dialogue at the heart of global citizenship within education. Victim-offender contact has been studied extensively in prisons, but research on contact between victims and mentally disordered offenders in forensic mental health settings is lacking. Therefore, an exploratory study was conducted on contact between victims and offenders in four Dutch forensic psychiatric hospitals. These offenders have committed serious (sexually) violent offenses, for which they could not be held fully responsible due to severe psychopathology. During the mandatory treatment, it is possible for offenders and their victims to engage in contact with each other if both parties agree to this. To explore the conditions under which this contact is suitable, we interviewed 35 social workers about their experiences in 57 cases from four Dutch forensic psychiatric hospitals. Findings demonstrated that, according to the social workers, no type of offense or psychopathology were obvious exclusion criteria for victim-offender contact. Social workers described offenders' problem awareness, stable psychiatric condition, and ability to keep to agreements as important factors that enable victim-offender contact. Implications and suggestions for future research are provided.

Roughly half of all men in prison are fathers of minor children. Despite the high prevalence of fatherhood in prisons, little is known about imprisoned fathers’ needs regarding fatherhood and family relationships. In prisons for men, limited attention is given to men’s roles as fathers and the difficulties they and their families encounter. Prison policies generally prioritise safety, security, and good order rather than promoting men’s identities as fathers and supporting families experiencing paternal imprisonment.

This article focuses on the recent judgment of the Court of Justice, Aranyosi and Caldararu. After conducting a legal analysis on this case, three issues are identified and they are separately discussed in three sections. The aim of this paper is to show the impact of this judgment on public order and public security in Europe on the one hand and on the individual’s fundamental rights, on the other hand. It is going to be argued that even though there are limits to the principle of mutual recognition, this new exception based on fundamental rights establishes a new procedure for non-surrender. Therefore, the Court of Justice creates a non-execution ground which the EU legislator did not intend to include in the Framework Decision on the European arrest warrant. This is explained by looking at the three interconnected notions of Freedom, Security and Justice.

De vraag is hoe groepsleiders de orde op de leefgroep vormgeven en of dit een verklaringsgrond is voor de beperkte recidivevermindering. Centraal in dit onderzoek staat het handelen van de groepsleider i.c. pedagogische medewerker, één van de sociale professionals binnen een breed forensisch domein.

Probation services in the Netherlands are private nonprofit organizations that are fully financed by the national Government and perform three main tasks: advise, supervision, and community services. The focus is on preventing recidivism and supporting people under supervision to live a crime-free life. The organizations have a unique position in the criminal justice system, working with suspects in the pre-trial phase period shortly after their arrest until sentencing and supervising people who spend the last phase of a prison sentence in the community, people convicted to a suspended sentence, and community sentences. Therefore, probation services cooperate with other criminal justice organizations, healthcare, social services, and local authorities to reach its aims. Recently, probation services intensified cooperation with prison staff in prisons in order to improve detention and reintegration plans and offer support during detention.

One of the most important criteria for a word to be selected as keyword is its relevance for the text. The tf.idf score of a term is a widely used relevance measure. While easy to compute and giving quite satisfactory results, this measure does not take (semantic) relations between words into account.
