The importance of professional skills in future engineering jobs is beyond discussion. Increasing numbers of universities have integrated training for such skills in their engineering curricula to prepare students to become highly qualified employees. HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht also implemented professional skills training in the IT Bachelor program to help our students develop towards successful and highly demanded IT engineers. However, these courses consistently score low in our student satisfaction surveys. To find the cause of this negative evaluation, we previously studied the motivation, attitude and anxiety of IT students towards learning soft, or professional, skills. This former quantitative study indicates that our IT students tend to have a positive motivation and attitude toward learning professional skills, while ’anxiety’ in learning professional skills increases from the first to the third year. In this qualitative study, we try to find causes for the increasing anxiety among IT students. We interviewed six third and fourth year IT students and after analysing these interviews we found that these students have experienced the need for professional skills during their internship. Besides, they emphasize the need of obtaining these skills for future employment. From the analysis of the interviews, it also appears that IT students rather felt difficulty in obtaining communication skills then anxiety. A possible cause for this difficulty mentioned by students was the character of students and the influence of the teacher. To overcome this difficulty obtaining communication skills, students suggested that training skills in an authentic engineering situation is more effective than doing exercises with simulated cases. However, the results of this study did not yield a conclusive insight in the cause of increased anxiety, hence further research is needed.

Spelen onderwijsinstellingen voldoende en tijdig in op de vaardigheden die toekomstbestendige werknemers en ondernemers nodig hebben? Of krijgen studenten zodra ze de arbeidsmarkt betreden een cultuurshock omdat het onderwijs achterblijft? Hoe en welke van de 21st century skills effectief in het onderwijs geïmplementeerd kunnen worden vereist volgens de lectoren nog vervolgonderzoek.

Hogescholen starten in 2022 met een eigen doctoraatstraject: het Professional Doctorate. Daarmee introduceert het hbo een nieuwe beroepsopleiding waarmee het de grenzen in de beroepspraktijk wil verleggen. Kandidaten worden opgeleid tot hooggekwalificeerde professionals die leren te interveniëren in complexe vraagstukken zoals de energietransitie of de gezondheidszorg. Belangrijke en noodzakelijke toevoeging Hogescholen zien een doctoraatstraject in het hbo als een belangrijke en noodzakelijke toevoeging binnen het hoger onderwijs stelsel. Het Professional Doctorate (PD) maakt een doorlopende leerlijn van bachelor via master tot doctorate in de beroepskolom mogelijk, en wordt nauw verbonden met het overige hbo-onderwijs. Doel is dat hbo bachelor- en masterstudenten in hun onderwijs de vruchten plukken van het onderzoek van PD-kandidaten naar de laatste ontwikkelingen in de beroepspraktijk. Daarmee is de introductie van het professional doctorate ook een investering in de bredere aansluiting van het hbo op de arbeidsmarkt.

Dat vraagt om nieuwe vaardigheden van pedagogische professionals (leraren, pedagogisch medewerkers en zorgprofessionals). As societies age, the development of resources and strategies that foster healthy ageing from the beginning of life become increasingly important. Social and healthcare professionals are key agents in this process; therefore, their training needs to be in agreement with societal needs. We performed a scoping review on professional competences for social and health workers to adequately promote healthy ageing throughout life, using the framework described by Arksey and O’Malley and the Joanna Briggs Institute Guidelines. A stakeholder consultation was held in each of the participating countries, in which 79 experts took part. Results show that current literature has been excessively focused on the older age and that more attention on how to work with younger population groups is needed. Likewise, not all disciplines have equally reflected on their role before this challenge and interprofessional approaches, despite showing promise, have not been sufficiently described. Based on our results, health and social professionals working to promote healthy ageing across the lifespan will need sound competences regarding person-centred communication, professional communication, technology applications, physiological and pathophysiological aspects of ageing, social and environmental aspects, cultural diversity, programs and policies, ethics, general and basic skills, context and self-management-related skills, health promotion and disease prevention skills, educational and research skills, leadership skills, technological skills and clinical reasoning. Further research should contribute to establishing which competences are more relevant to each discipline and at what level they should be taught, as well as how they can be best implemented to effectively transform health and social care systems.

We assess the incidence of numeracy skills mismatch in five countries: Belgium, Chile, Italy, Netherlands, and the United States of America. To do this, we make use of a new approach (Brun-Schamme & Rey, 2021), namely by identifying someone as being mismatched if the score for numeracy skills is outside the interval [median – SD , median + SD]. We make use of the PIAAC dataset, collected by the OECD, a survey that measures adults’ proficiency in numeracy among other type of skills. We find that 14% of the workers are over-skilled, whereas 16% are under-skilled. Being over-skilled is more likely for men, younger age-groups, having a high level of education, using numeracy skills often at work, and having studied science, mathematics, and engineering.

A social media architect is an appealing new profession that entails crossovers between communication and IT & Design. There are no study programmes for this job. Important questions are how to interest secondary school pupils for such a new job, and how to prepare them for these jobs or jobs that do not even exist today? This research aims to set an example by presenting a realistic job profile of a social media architect by linking the ‘21st century skills’ to the context in which he/she operates.

Technology, data use, and digitisation are based on mathematical structures, and this permeates many aspects of our daily lives: apps, online activities, and all kinds of communication. Equipping people to deal with this mathematisation of society is a big challenge. Which competences are needed, which skills must be mastered? Which dispositions are helpful? These are the questions that matter in the development of adult education. The concept of numeracy is mentioned already for many years as a possible useful approach to equip adults with the necessary skills. In this paper we will argue that is only true when numeracy is defined as a multifaceted concept which combines knowledges, skills, higher order skills, context and dispositions.

Research topic/aim The professional development of teacher educators (T Eds) is increasingly being recognised as a topic of paramount importance, partly caused by the attention for the lifelong learning of those responsible for teaching student teachers. In this presentation we focus on the professional development T Eds with regard to their role as second order practitioner (Murray and Male, 2005). Many T Eds identify themselves as a teacher in higher education and they lack attention for their specific role of being a teacher of teachers. In the project we investigated the possibilities of encouraging T Eds to focus on this role, by altering the procedure in which T Eds and their team-manager set development agreements. Theoretical and methodology framework Teacher Educators have specific roles and tasks (Lunenberg et al, 2012) and they need special skills to fulfil these roles. In the Netherlands, the Dutch Association of Teacher Educators has developed a professional standard, in which the skills for an average experienced teacher educator are described. In our project the professional standard served as a tool in the development agreement procedure for T Eds. In total 16 T Eds from 5 teams participated. In their preparation for the conversation with their team manager, T Eds studied this professional standard and used this to write down their strengths and development possibilities. After that, they entered the conversation with their team manager and came to development agreements. To study the effect of this new procedure, T Eds (two group interviews) and team managers were interviewed (one group interview) about their opinion on the preparation phase and the conversation itself. Results and conclusions Findings appear threefold. First, T Eds appreciate the use of the professional standard in the preparation. It helps them to focus on their role as teacher of teachers. Second, both team managers and T Eds mention that they now have 'words' to talk about the profession. Third, Teds and team managers both hold the opinion that the conversation itself is more thorough than it used to be before. Relevance to European educational research Our findings contribute to the body of knowledge around professional development activities for teacher educators, especially with regards to their role as second order practitioner or 'teacher of teachers' .

Abstract Background People with epilepsy and mild intellectual disability have a limited adaptive capacity resulting in difficulties in communication and social skills. Virtual Reality (VR) has the potential to help this group of people to learn how to manage difficult situations. SEIN (Expertise Center for Epilepsy) provides training to the residents to improve their social and communication skills. The purpose of the exploratory study was to establish whether VR could be a suitable digital means to provide a more efficient blended training. Methods Online interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals from SEIN: two coordinators, three psychologists and two coaches. The participants were asked about their ideas for improving the social skills of the residents and their view on using VR to do so. Interviews were recorded, transcribed and analyzed using thematic analysis approach. In addition, observations were conducted during a training session to get a realistic sense of its process and contents. Observations were noted in a logbook. Findings The participants are positive to use VR in the training but point out that it is not suitable for all the residents. VR glasses were ruled out because it put the resident alone in a virtual setting. VR with a tablet is preferred to allow the residents and the healthcare professional to simultaneously view 3D simulated situations and allowing opportunities to talk about it. The development of VR contents and simulations using tablet will need to take into account relevant VR guidelines dedicated to people with epilepsy. Appropriate training for the healthcare professionals also needs to be provided. Conclusions The use of Virtual Reality in training programs to improve communication and social skills of adults with intellectual disabilities and epilepsy is promising, We advocate to utilize user-centered design and co-creation approaches with all concerned parties for further development of tablet-based VR solutions
